Bertrand at Mister A's Ratings and Reviews
I was really looking forward to trying out this legendary establishment and boy, was I disappointed! As someone who frequently dines out and tries out new restaurants, this was one I had been putting off since it's been around a while.
Let's start with the dress code. When I received my confirmation call, I was asked if I was aware of the dress code. I was and so the girl spared me the details. However, when I was dining, I saw several people in jeans, which supposedly are not allowed.
Secondly, and most importantly, the food was not up to par with some of the most hip, up and coming modern restaurants around town. The menu looked tired and tasted like it. We requested the prix fixe menu offerings which gave us a choice of about 2 to 3 items per course. I requested the zucchini and burrata. Nowhere, did it state that the zucchini would be raw, which made them a little hard to eat, with not enough burrata and sauce. The second appetizer was the tuna tartare. The tuna had two very thick pieces of tuna and absolutely no flavor. The main course was the steak and short-rib dish. The steak was tasteless and a little dry. The short ribs were good, albeit salty. The best course was dessert which was the coconut rice pudding. It was very sweet, but had good flavor.
We were celebrating our anniversary and the view was spectacular, which is the main reason for dining here. Apart from that, the service was lacking. Our table did not get bussed between courses. It took 1/2 hour between the 1st appetizer and the second and we had to keep requesting refills on our drinks.
For $400.00, I would expect better service and food. Definitely not worth it and I would not be back.
One of San Diego's best "special occasion" restaurants but the service was just awful. The Maitre D acted like he was doing us a favor seating us. The waitress was good, but lots of lack of attention to detail (like the meaning of "non-dairy"). Overall, they need to improve their game.
Annabelle says: Very well known and established venue living up to its quality food reputation! Lobster was incredible and a large portion for the price. GORGEOUS urban view from the roof top. Tres Leches cake was creative and scrumptious. Servers were adolescent and continuously repeated the nonsensical "enjoy!" with every visit.
Would not return except for the view or with first timers.
Great place for upscale dining. If you are looking for excellent food, old school/ top-notch service, Mr. A's is for you. Be prepared to be treated as royalty as the staff caters to your needs. With views of the city, mouth watering dishes, and superb service, Mr. A's will surely please.
This was a special event my husband birthday, The whole evening was superb - the service, the food and the atmosphere. I've been to several top-flight restuarants in the US and Europe, including several Michelin star-rated restaurants in France. and Mister As is the equal of any of them. Thanks for the great service ,will definitely recommend to everyone.
5th anniversary made super special by the staff. They were amazingly tentative without being annoying. Spectacular view. Food was fresh and delicious. Had our fave wines. My husband is somewhat picky and he absolutely loved his steak. Beet salad so great, lamb duo (gf option available) was so flavorful and filling. I would go here again in a heartbeat.
Was highly recommended by friend. Owner came over to converse. Food is very good, but view is outstanding! Near airport and plans would come in for landings. The plane noise level was not at all a problem, and by the time the planes got to us, they were below our level and seemed to be in slow motion. Very cool. Loved our time there!
We topped off a week in San Diego with friends by dining at Mr. A's. There were six of us and we sat outside to enjoy the weather and 180 degree view of downtown San Diego to Mission Bay. Sunsets are amazing as is watching the planes as they land in San Diego. The service at Mr. A's was exceptional from start to finish. There are plenty of food options to choose from and everything we had from appetizers to dessert were fantastic! The chef accommodated the Tasting Menu for two of us - and both were happy with the portion sizes and thought all dishes were delicious. The rest of us ordered a la carte - Pork Chop with Polenta, Wild Salmon, Filet Mignon - all agreed that from presentation to taste, this is a special place in San Diego you don't want to miss.
Reservations were for 7pm. We were seated at 8pm and ordered the food immediately since he had 1 hour ate the bar to study the menu. Skip the starter since we waited to long. My pork was over cooked and dry as beef jerky! The service at the bar was great and so were the drinks. The waiter was great and the food was just rubbishy!!! The hostess was completely uninterested in our experience! Good waiter and bar keeper! Kitchen is a complete disaster and serving food like they did a insult to any kustomer! We had great meals at the place but it is hit or miss!
The food, atmosphere and view were absolutely amazing. Definitely book a reservation well in advance to ensure you get the best possible table. Though it appeared that service was top notch for most customers, my service was not on par with the venue and fell way below my expectations, but management did take an interest in my concern. I would definitely recommend this place to bring out of town guests, business lunch/dinner or just to see the amazing view while dining.
We had the tasting menu with wine pairings. For 2 of the 4 courses the wine arrived after the food - we had to ask for it. The wines weren't listed with the food on the menu so you didn't know what you were getting until it arrived and the pairing I had with the chicken didn't really pair well. Overall they could up their game.
