* It's our goal at Bernie's to provide each and every one of our guests with a unique, and memorable experience. We aim to be a meeting place, a center for gathering with friends and family. A place where every person walks away satisfied. Not just happy with the cuisine, but by the time spent with us.
What Insiders Are Saying
Bernie's Lunch & Supper doesn't make a whole lot of sense on paper, but it comes together nicely. It's great for a number of occasions.
Oysters were dry and sticky, pasta had so much black pepper it was inedible.
Love Bernies. Food is always delicious and one of the more comfortable spots especially in the River North neighborhood.
Usually this is a busy place, but the night we went it was empty, perhaps due to holiday slow-down, so noise levels were low. Knowing how it typically is I noted medium noise. We especially enjoyed the lamb hummus and our food was delicious, as usual, overall. The menu is small for dinner, but everyone was happy and liked their meal. Wine recommendation made by the waiter was also spot on ( and our group is picky!). We’ll be back.
Good food, nice atmosphere, Monday wine specials and a friendly staff make up for a kitchen that can get in the weeds pretty easily. A great local spot with a beautiful roof deck in the summer. Highly recommended.
One of our favorite neighborhood places, food never disappoints!
Always so enjoyable!!
Our waiter, the bartender, was rude throughout our experience. Never cleared away dishes until we finally asked. We ordered a $7 side of hash browns that was no more than 3 bites of potatoes. Brunch menu is very limited and just boring.
Have been many times over the years and while I realize they have had some turnover in the kitchen they are executing the dishes as well if not better than under the previous chefs! In fact, I'd go so far as saying that their burger may be the best burger I have eaten in Chicago!
Brunch was delicious! I actually got the burger and it was one of the best I’ve had in Chicago! And that’s coming from a HUGE foodie! Barrett, one of the manager’s made our experience so comforting. He was very hospitable and that’s very hard to find.
Calm place to unwind for Sunday brunch Good drinks selection
I have really enjoyed Bernie's in the past, but we went for brunch yesterday and everyone was disappointed. No one really enjoyed their meal (except for my husband who ordered the burger). Service was slow and the place was not very busy. I love the ambiance, parking, and ability to get a reservation for brunch, but I do not think that we will be back because we did not like the food and it was still fairly expensive. So many other better brunch choices!
Really enjoyed the food. The rooftop bar with the nice weather was definitely worth it. Got some extra points from my girlfriend for finding this spot. Our server was helpful and friendly. Definitely plan on coming back.
Menu has changed. Removed all the best dishes. New food seems to be less in quality
Not sure why recent reviews were so bad. Very limited menu but everything we had was great; hummus, salad, burger, and a special of brick chicken was the best I ever had.
Loved this place in the past, the menu changes are a big negative. Both lunch and dinner menu’s have gotten to odd....
It was a bit noisy for the first hour, but quieted down later.
Loud and terrible service
Menu has been reduced to very few choices. Not sure if the restaurant is under new management but we won’t be back anytime soon.
This restaurant is largely a bar that serves a pretty good, but very limited menu. Excellent burger, lukewarm fries. Nice mozzarella and beet salad.
Got our order wrong and took a long time to get food
Nice service reasonably priced food
Bernie’s is my favorite happy hour spot in River North. The waitresses/waiters are always hit or miss. They’re either GREAT or they’re kinda rude. It’s River North so it’s expected, still love it here regardless.
Really good burger! Upstairs patio is great in the summer
My husband and I were excited to try this restaurant as the atmosphere and menu looked great when we looked it up online. We discovered it by passing by one night to go to The Drifter and had made reservations for the following weekend for Saturday brunch. We arrived and were told that there was a wait to sit upstairs and were given a seat downstairs. We were one of two tables with people, the rest of the space was empty. We didn't mind waiting to sit upstairs (we know the rooftop looked awesome and thought it was probably busy) but thought it was strange we had to wait despite having a reservation. During our wait, a bus boy brought walk-in's upstairs (the host had stepped away) and sat them which we found very odd but didn't want to say anything, we were fine waiting. We were finally seated upstarts 40 minutes after our reservation time and when we got there, over half the tables and space was empty. Service was extremely slow - it seemed as if the bartender was servicing the tables on top of making all of the drinks. He was pleasant though and it's obviously not his fault if the roof is understaffed. It took us an hour and half after our reservation time to finally get our food. When it arrived our "large plate" of "soft scrambled eggs" was not large enough to share and the eggs were burnt on the bottom (visibly brown and crispy). We had also ordered the fried egg sandwich without bacon and got the BLT without bacon instead. When the server was informed he brought out a plate of eggs for us to add to the sandwich instead of having it replaced. On top of the poor experience, we felt the basic food items we ordered were way overpriced. $12 for just scrambled eggs and one piece of toast is a lot... especially when the eggs were burnt. I'm not one to write reviews (and really wanted to like this restaurant) - I just feel management or ownership should know what's going on. After all of this, we decided we won't be coming back again.
Made reservation, was seated immediately, waitress very attentive/friendly. Food good
Burgers, hummus and chicken all good.
Outside patio nice.. perfect night to sit outside.
Food not very good. Bread app was lifeless. The hummus was over oily - literally swimming in oil and the pita was unlike any I’ve ever tasted - not in good way. Salmon and mussels were fine. Cocktails not good. Specifically the Aviation had too much simple syrup. “New” old fashioned had too much cinnamon rendering them both unpleasant.
We were not aware we could only order from the brunch menu on the Sunday we went here. The waitress said the menu went directly from brunch to dinner at 5pm and we were there at 2pm. We actually wanted a cheeseburger, but all that was on the menu that was close was a turkey burger or a BLT. So we ordered from the brunch menu. 30 minutes later, a couple was seated at the table next to ours and the waitress told them the same thing about only ordering from the brunch menu, but she offered to get them a cheeseburger. Why weren't we offered the same option? One other thing. After we ordered our drinks, it took 15 minutes to actually get them delivered to the table. Our waitress was horrible, didn't even thank us on the way out when we walked past her, but that's ok. It was reflected in the 5% tip.
I was really excited to try Bernie's and booked it especially to celebrate my 30th birthday with some girlfriends. Upon arrival, the restaurant was not crowded and we were seated immediately - this is the only good thing that came out of our visit.
Our server didn't address the table or introduce herself until approximately 15 minutes after we sat down. We had to ask for water and she left so quickly we had to wait for her to come back with the water for us to be able to order any other drinks. I ordered a bottle of rose and as quickly as I pointed out which bottle, she had left again - she didn't clarify how many glasses or if anyone else wanted something to drink. It was another 10 minutes until the manager brought over the rose and then left ... again unable to place any other drink orders or food orders. After another 5 minutes, my friend approached both the server & manager to ask if we could order other drinks and finally a few minutes after that, the server came over - thanked us for our patience (???) and took our orders. She wasn't at all friendly and at no point even tried to offer good service. The food was fine - not terrible, not great. The manager tried to serve us 2 different tables' food prior to our correct orders arriving - not really sure what was going on yesterday. Quite frankly, we would've been happy to order several bottles of wine and dessert, but no one ever asked if we needed or wanted anything else and no one really seemed to care if we stayed or if we ever came back... which is good, because we certainly won't be back and they lost out on what could've been a hefty bill.
Service is just okay, but it’s still a fun location in the summer with decent food.
We have been to Bernie’s frequently from living in the neighborhood and this place has severely gone down hill. Upon arrival the air conditioning was not working (which understandably things can occur). Service was extremely poor, the waitress pretty much forgot we were sitting there, surprisingly there was only one other table with a party of 4 at the time. Not sure how we were overlooked. Once we ordered food was piling up at the cooks station and we were unsure where all the food was going with no one in the restaurant. More customers arrived and we still had not received our brunch. When our meal came it was not cold and I had to send it back then I couldn’t eat the new order because they never brought me utensils we had to go get that ourselves. When asked for the check the waitress again forgot several times it was as if we were invisible. Very disappointed and I will not be recommending to anyone in the area, it’s a shame it hasn’t excelled further.
Service was very slow. Took 45 minutes to make salads. Waitress also forgot drinks and came back twenty minutes later with nothing
Saturday brunch hoping for nice meal but rather plain and amazingly slow service. We were the first seating of the day, and while everyone was definitely doing things, we waited for almost an hour for a bagel and eggs. Have had one previous good experience here so hopefully a bad shift.
Very disappointing. I came there with a client for a work lunch. It took over 35 minutes to get our salads. That’s right, just salads were ordered. As a way to say “ sorry” they brought us out 4 salads instead of 2. Which really made no sense there were only 2 of us. Didn’t even give us a discount. Very poor service.
First time there and loved it! Can’t wait to return!
My burger was raw and took a long time to redo. Disappointed in the menu change, now it’s very typical. We came for the Spanish influenced menu.
Love the patio
This was my 3rd and final visit. Other 2 times were great. This tim: Service was glacial. Food was uneven. Hummus and burgers great. My waaay overpriced chicken was completely tasteless. I ate about a quarter of it but our waiter did not ask if anything was wrong w it.
Used to be a favorite - prices went up, portions down. Menu reduced. Not a fan of the new look.
Horrible experience all around. Food and service were terrible.
