Benny's Chop House Ratings and Reviews
The food was very good and well prepared. The sides were family style with plenty for a large party. The service was very attentive overall, especially to the member of our party celebrating a birthday. The placement of some tables, including ours, was awkward, in passageways and open to the kitchen hallway. It was cold and people were constantly bustling past you. The wine list was quite large, but way over priced with a very large percentage at $100 and up. The staff helped choose a more affordable blended red that was very nice.
The food was fantastic and the sevice exceptional. I appreciate that they are open for lunch and offer a lighter lunch menu along with their standard steak options. I highly reccommend the Wagu Skirt Steak. It's the best I have tried. It was done exactly as requested. The server was very friendly.
I regularly come her, a dozen times over last 3 yrs alone, both socially and business. Hugely disappointed particularly for how expensive. Three of our group had steaks: a filet, a natural filet, a ribeye. I had Dover sole. One steak had to be sent back as undercooked; while everybody eats that person had to wait. The other 2 were mediocre. My sole was too dry. The bottom line is the kitchen is not getting the job done. Even with a great cut of meat that will simply be grilled, you still need a good chef. The deserts were truly underwhelming. Even if you come here don’t order the brûlée and definitely don’t order the banana cream pie. It tasted like a whole banana dropped into vanilla pudding.
With all the other steak places in the city, no reason to gamble here.
It was NYE so I expected noisy. The music was live and sounded great. We had our reservations for 9:30; but didn't get seated until closer to 10:15 pm. Again, with it being a special event, I wasn't surprised. We were able to get a seat at the bar very easily and the bartender took notice and got us drinks quickly. When we finally sat in the main dining room, it took a while for our waiter to come check on us and take our wine order. He didn't come until one of us flagged him down. After that, it was all splendid. The food was fantastic. The only item that was "meh" was the Lobster Bisque. It was bland and watery. The lobster chunks were good though. The wine was delicious and the steaks (of course amazing) and the crème brulee was creamy. I also recommend the truffle fries for a side.
This is a nice place for business or special occasion dinner. The two things that do stand out are the macaroni and cheese, and their in house smoked bacon. The kale strawberry salad is good, and I don’t particularly like kale. 😀
Everything was nicely seasoned. The staff is friendly and helpful.
This is a nice dining experience. It just didn’t make it to an excellent Chicago Chop house.
Excellent as always. This was New Years Eve and we had reservations for 8:30. Arrived and managed to find a spot at the bar. The group playing at the bar was excellent and in tune with the crowd. However, in the future, the group's noise level was a bit excessive. We decided to eat in the main dining area. Service was superb, courses moved at a good pace and the steaks were great. We don't come to the city very often. We like to try new restaurants. We do keep coming back to Benny's. Thanks everyone. Keep up the good work.
Had another wonderful new years eve dinner - 2nd in a row (3rd visit overall). Our special dinner spot each visit to Chicago! Great steak, oysters rock’, shrimp, iceberg wedge and those truffle fries! Only negative was an over-zealous waiter trying to upsell & make our dinner to HIS liking - although he did nicely give us a free dessert. Unfortunately it wasn’t the carrot cake that I waited a year for (which I was prepared to pay for) - its absolutely THE best! All staff are otherwise always very courteous and professional.
We went for New Years and we were sat in the bar for dinner. The music was great, but since it was New Years, many people were bumping into our table. Very close quarters. Otherwise. The food was fantastic, drinks were very good even though the bartender forgot our drink order and made us something different. It still tasted good. We had a fun time at Benny’s and would go again
One of the best Chop House's that I have ever been to! My wife and I truly enjoyed spending NYE in Chicago and Benny's Chop House topped it off! The steaks are tremendous - cannot go wrong with any choice on the menu. We also has some seafood and oysters - very delicious! Staff are all pleasant and very helpful! We will be back!
The whole experience was excellent. It was a friend’s 61st Birthday. The attention to detail was incredible. The menu had her name on it! It was so surprising and fun. Then, the food-yum! Every bite was delicious. And for an encore, they brought a out of this world desert with Happy Birthday on it. Couldn’t be happier. Thanks to a great staff that brought it all together.
Disappointed with the food quality. Bone in 16oz filet was $70 + medium size lobster tail was well over $104, $10 for mashed potatoes, $17 for 4 oysters Rockefeller, $11 for an iceberg lettuce wedge. With taxes and tip without any alcohol, just water, the total cost was $203. Would not go back even if someone else was paying for the meal.
Benny’s delivered on every front, with a particular emphasis on the service and the meat. Our evening began with meeting our hostess, Louisa, who would prove to be a very friendly and helpful guide to the rest of the meal. She efficiently answered all of our questions, steered us to favorites, and warned us when dishes might be more extreme or different than expected. Overall, she was a real highlight as her positivity and charm shaped the experience for the entire evening!
The drinks, appetizers, and sides were all good supporting cast members to the beef. For a drink, I got the “old fashioned” which was a sweeter take on the drink than I had drank before, but it was very tasty. The crab cake appetizer has the crab itself do the heavy lifting, which was a relief after eating a lot of crab cakes that rely on filler. The brussels sprouts were a decent side, but did not bring a wow factor to the table.
As should be expected, the heavy hitter was the beef. The steak menu features “traditional” and “natural” cuts, which Louisa happily explained came from cows with different diets. We tried a filet of each type, to test our palates. The difference was amazing! While both steaks were full of flavor (and cooked perfectly), the natural cut was lean and buttery while the traditional cut was full and earthy. Being able to try both cuts and see the variation was the type of culinary experience that comes along only rarely.
Our night ended with creme brulée, with a perfectly caramelized top. We were celebrating a special event, and Benny’s went above and beyond to help us celebrate! They included a candle and a chocolate “Congratulations” on the dessert plate. It was the appropriately decadent end to a first-rate meal. Overall, great meat, great appetizers, sides were delicious but not show stoppers, and the service was AMAZING. Will recommend!
Our waiter Caesar was fantastic! He helped us plan out our meal around the main course so that we were not too full by the time it came and suggested the most perfect accompanying side dishes to go with it! We split a grilled Caesar salad and a shrimp De Jonghe. Our main course was a grilled to perfection Japanese Tajima Kobe filet! OMG! It was fantastic! For desert I had a healthy slice of banana cream pie and my fiancée had chocolate pudding cake! What a treat! It was hands down the best banana cream pie that I had ever had! Our dining experience overall was fantastic due the the wonderful food and was further enhanced with the help of Caesars suggestions.
I've eaten here before and it's always been very good, this time not so much. Veal Rib Chop, way overcooked and tough. Sides overcooked (brocolini), the other was brought out cold. I ate at the bar, and it was barely half full. They didn't seem very busy, just poor execution on the food. Really no excuse for that!
We have been going to Benny's for Christmas Eve for a few years now and it's our favorite downtown restaurant. The food, service and ambience are excellent. The bone in rib eye was perfect. The cocktails were also excellent. They didn't rush us and we were able to enjoy the evening at leisure with our family. Luisa, our waitress, was phenomenal. She has a great memory for details and called us by our names which made it very personable. Would highly
Great old time steak house. The decor looks a little dated but appropriate for the genre. Great wine list including a good by-the-glass selection. All the traditional steak-house offerings in apps, sides and entrees. Had the wedge salad - excellent blue cheese dressing with abundant crumbles. The filet was cooked perfectly, flavorful and tender. The scallops were very good with a good seer. The baked potato was huge but hot, crisp skin, cooked just right and served with the traditional topppings. Service was very professional, timely and non-obtrusive. Our only complaint was that our booth was under a HVAC vent which blasted cold air continuously. There were not any vacant tables and even though we were twice told the thermostat had been adjusted there was no change. Did not let it spoil our evening and we would not hesitate to go back.
very disappointed at Benny's this time.It was Christmas Eve and my husband and i went there for dinner. I ordered the surf and turf, which consisted of lobster tail and a filet. The lobster tail was not edible it was so tough i could not chew it. My husband had the Dover sole which was just average. The service was not good. Ordered the most expensive things on the menu and was dissatisfied. upon arriving to the restaurant we stopped at the bar for a drink before our reservation time and had a drink. The bartenders and the service at the front bar were wonderful drinks good people very nice. Use to be a regular at Benny's now disappointed.
Food was okay but there are better steak houses.
Shrimp deJong appetizer was not authentic. 10$ for a baked potato is just silly.
Handcrafted cocktails-meh, just average. The kale side dish is killer!
Service was good but a little bit much.
Not good enough to warrant a second visit.
We had an unforgettable night at Benny's. It was our 33rd wedding anniversary and they sure made special for us. They gave us a very private booth. They printed special menus with our names and congratulations. Our server Luisa was phenomenal! This was our second time there and the chef remembered us from our previous visit. And the food is outstanding! For appetizers, my husband had a crab cake and I got oysters. For dinner, bone-in filet mignon, ribeye, and lobster risotto. Their wine selection is extensive. Thank you, Benny's for making our anniversary celebration so special.
It's always good at Benny's. Our only issue was the wait staff seemed to take issue with the fact that : 1.) We don't drink alcohol. 2.) We don't care for appetizers. 3.) We share our steak and sides. I know they are probably used to people ordering wine, appetizers, steaks, sides, etc. But my wife and I have small appetites and feel as though we deserve the same courtesy and attitude regardless of what we order. The food was very good and we were very generous with our tipping. We just felt as though we didn't receive the best "attitude" based on the size of our tab.
