Excellent food and atmosphere for mid-week dining. Enjoyed pork chop and ox tail. Reasonably priced cocktails and wine by the glass.
Amazing food, service, and ambiance!
Amazing!! Definitely get their homemade bread. We came for brunch and loved the different options compared to other places. We also got to meet the head chef which was wonderful. I look forward to trying their dinner menu.
This is just an outstanding, not-to-be-missed destination. Go! Often. You'll be happy.
We dined here when it first opened and the offerings had a unique African style, or what I imagine to be African. However, nearly a year later the menu offerings seemed more African American. Moreover, the price level of menu items did not justify what was presented. Example: NC seafood dish was tasty but only 2 shrimp and 2 scallops were plated. Really? I am unlikely to return, when there are more unusual menus for the same prices. The service and atmosphere are very relaxing.
The waiter was really spacey & distracted. We’d been here before & loved it but the service was disappointing which took away from the overall experience this time
Great service and outstanding food! They were very accommodating with a couple of food allergies, but it didn’t compromise the taste at all. Amazing meal!
Been frequenting this place almost right since it opened. Has never remotely disappointed. This time was no different and maybe even a notch above. Favorite gin cocktail - chili and lemongrass - with fresh lime and plenty of ice was way beyond the good ones in the past. New bartender Athena outdid herself. Food was great as ever. Oxtail to die for, and the seafood purloo also awesome. Pinot noir to accompany dinner was fabulous. Our server Evan was nice and sweet and attentive and professional. I cannot say enough good things about this place and keep recommending it to everyone. Happy to see that, probably since good mentions in both The New York Times and Time Magazine, there were lots more folks dining there. Yes! People, you need to go and support this important and delicious venue! Thank you for being here and for helping to revive this important and vibrant community.
Wonderful food, with creative twists on soul food staples. Service was warm and helpful. Put this one on your list of go to places in Asheville!
I recently moved to Asheville. I am a former chef from New York and I read an article highlighting 21 outstanding female chefs in Asheville. Shorty (the chef at Benne on Eagle) happen to be one of the chef's highlighted. My friend and I ordered three things to share an ended up fighting over scraps. I can honestly say the meal I had ranks in the top three meals in my life, and I have eaten in practically every country in the world.
We enjoyed our visit to Benne on Eagle. The space was really nice and the room did not feel crowded--they have much more capacity than they are currently using, but it was comfortable and not too loud. The food was very good: interesting takes on traditional Southern food, with some nice twists. A couple items were overcooked (to our liking)--the pork chop had sat under the heat lamp for a minute longer than everything else and was not quite as hot at service, but overall the meal was solid. The oxtail and cream peas was excellent, as was the purloo. The service was a bit uneven; we had to ask twice for water, and while the server was very knowledgeable about the food and quick to share her favorites (which were quite tasty), she was not that attentive. I had indicated that we had a birthday to celebrate on OpenTable when I made the reservation, but that info did not get to the server from the host. When she learned about the birthday at the end of the meal, we had already made the decision to go elsewhere for a dessert, but she insisted that we get a dessert to go. The hummingbird cake was excellent, but it seemed strange that she charged us for it. All in all, the mediocre service did not detract too much from the overall experience, and we will be back.
We loved our appetizers! The main courses were a little underwhelming (especially the steak which was much too charred and chewy in texture). Otherwise, food was great.
We had a wonderful brunch here on our last day of vacation and everyone in my group voted it our best meal while in Asheville. It is a great mix of traditional southern food with a new twist.
Ham was way too salty and desperately needs to be soaked before cooking
Food was innovative but that did not get in the way of it being delicious. Our severs, Ally and Ebony, were attentive and charming. It was a great evening.
Food was excellence but service was mediocre. Our waiter was not knowledgeable about the wine list. We ordered the whole snapper to share. We had to ask for plates. We were not told until we started eating that we could have it deboned by the kitchen. Our table kinda fell off the radar of our original waiter. Food was not hot by the time plates arrived and various condiments. Overall service was disappointing which colored the quality of the food.
This was one of the best dining experiences. Would love to go back.
The oxtail and especially the buttermilk soup were very, very good- the best food we had on a trip through Virginia and DC. The rest wasn't especially memorable. I had the quail and the rabbit and they were both nice, standard, fancy-restaurant food.
What most impressed me about Benne was its commitment to its community and local culture. It felt authentic and like it was trying to make the world a better place. I would definitely recommend it for a splurge, or if someone else was paying.
We had read about Benne on Eagle and have been fans of Rhubarb for a while, so we decided to try it while driving through Asheville. We loved the vibe, service, food and especially being able to meet John Fleer! We shared the Forever Roasted Pork biscuit snack which was excellent. My husband had the shrimp purloo and I had the liver and pickles appetizer which had a variety of things with it like chicken livers, rabbit sausage and pickled veggies. All great! We'll be back!
Only issue was the reservation. I had requested a regular table and the hostess only offered bar seating. I explained that we would wait for a table. Think there was a large party they were waiting for thus making those with other reservations wait. Another person stepped in to straighten things out

We arrived with a reservation but table was occupied so we had to sit in the bar area. The hostess was not apologetic- she just said this is it. The food was mediocre - the head chef was not cooking. Over priced for the quality of the food. Will not return and will advise friends not to bother.
Our food was delicious and different from anything we have ever eaten. We all had a taste of each others food and we raved about it. The cocktails were the most unusual and so yummy. That says lots for 4 picky drinkers.
Service too slow.
We had brunch and it was amazing ; we had a great waiter. I especially liked the smashed cheeseburger and my wife loved the lemon grass cocktail with chemist gin. We will be back soon!
Totally amazing food, drinks and service! First time in Asheville and we picked the best restaurant. Saw it listed as a nominee in the Bon Appetit list of new restaurants and it definitely lived up to the hype. We would go again and again if we only lived closer.
Everything was GREAT - the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is one of our plates came out WAY, WAY too salty and was inedible. We pointed it out and they took it off the bill, but this is the only reason we couldn't give a perfect 5. Everything else was amazing from cocktails to finish. Can't wait to go back.
The food was outstanding. Try the deconstructed deviled egg appetizer. All four of our party were delighted with their entrees. What really stood out was the service. Our waiter was attentive and professional, not fawning. He went out of his way to right down several options for us tourists for after dinner drinks, not only the location, but style of music, type of crowd, noise level, etc. Overall a fantastic experience for a night out with friends.
Bartender and drink presentation fabulous. Small plates arrived on top of each other despite our request to space them out timewise. Food was excellent with one or two goods. Pork bbq
and soup were phenomenal. Cabbage roll is very good while hot. Salad w field peas refreshing. Fritters weren’t bad just not memorable. More small plates and two entrees for four of us and wine completed evening.
Space was nice and service was good - food was both hit and miss. With so many other options in Asheville would not be on the top of my list to recommend.

Excellent food with a wonderful history. Our waiter, Nehemiah, was an excellent representative for Benne, carefully explaining each dish and the history behind us. A marvelous experience.
We went with friends to see what all the hoopla was about. It more than lived up to all of its accolades. Can’t wait to try it for breakfast and brunch.
Interesting menu that is worth a try. All the food was tasty, although a requested medium steak was more on the rare side. Entrees were a bit on the slow side. Because we wanted to try a variety of items, it ended up being pricey.
This was even better than we expected! We went here for brunch in a late Sunday afternoon. Service from the host stand to the server was impeccable. Our server, Ebony was fantastic. She was excited about her job, excited about the menu and just happy to have us. I initially wanted the eggs Benedict but they ran out of biscuits. Note...if you want to eat here and there are festivals in town, opt to go early! I went with my seconded choice of French toast and was not disappointed. But the highlight was what my husband had neckbone hash. When it came to the table I could tell from just the smell it was going to be good. I was able to have several bites...and it was better than good. It was probably one of the best hash dishes he or I have ever had. It was flavorful and tender. I lamented now ordering my own! Highly recommend! We also had coffee that I believe was local and was so smooth. All in all a superb dining experience, we would recommend to friends and will definitely eat here again.
Great Sunday brunch - best eggs Benedict I’ve ever had!
As monthly visitors to Asheville, we've been to Benne several times both for dinner and for brunch and have recommended it to others. 09/22/19 wasn't their best day. Seating was slow even tho' both the people in front of me and I had reservations. That may have been partly because tables weren't bussed promptly. Hostess walked us by several dirty tables. Ours was clean but not set; glasses, utensils and napkins piled in the middle of the table. We sat for a while before the server came by to say she would be with us shortly. I ordered their eggs benedict and was told the server had to check if they still had any biscuits as she had been warned they were running low. She returned triumphantly reporting that she had "fought for" me to get the very last biscuit. This was less than half way through brunch service and biscuits are one of their signature items. Later we had to flag down the server to ask for refills on water. I watched her deliver drinks and take orders at other tables before returning with our water. I realize hospitality is a small margin business and restaurants have to manage costs but if this experience is the new normal rather than one off day, we'll take Benne off our list.
The brunch menu was unusual and dishes quite tasty. I had the breakfast bowl with red rice, greens plantains and a poached eggs - it was filling and delicious. My husband loved his smash Burger, and our friends were equally complimentary about their dishes. Don't be afraid to experience this Affrilachian cuisine. And ask for Ebony for your server, she was great!
Hostess was cold and somewhat rude, service and food slow but food very good.
The reason to go is the food. The service is a bit spotty when the place is full. It's the best oxtail I've ever had.
