The restaurant is closed. We arrived at the location to find it permanently closed. No advanced notice from Open table. In fact we received a email reminder.. Not good
THIS RESTAURANT DOESN'T EXISIT ANYMORE IN MID-TOWN, DESPITE OPENTABLE STILL TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR THIS LOCATION. The Tribeca location is still in operation.
Showed up for a 6pm pre-theatre meal only to find an abandoned storefront with a broken glass front door. THANKS OPEN TABLE! (Will I still get my 100 dining points?)
Food was fine; service was awful.
Four of us arrived a little before 9pm on a Thursday night. The restaurant was nearly empty, but we weren't worried because it was late for pre-theater and early for after theater. Despite having only three or four tables to serve, the waiters seemed incapable of getting anything right. One entree came out much later than the others and the service was generally bumbling. The meals -- traditional Indian fare -- were thankfully just fine.
This is a true find for a great pre-theater meal! Excellent Indian food, priced right!
Wonderful pre-theater prix-fixe meal! Can't wait to go back to try their Lunch Buffet.
Everything was OK. Food was abundant, authentic, and a bit spicier than I would have preferred. The place is nice, but it was very noisy and it was hard to hear my companions have any kids of discussion with me or between themselves.
I enjoyed my meal very much. The food was tasty and the service was very good. The paratha was delicious.
I've been to many Indian restaurants -- most are quite different, depending on the part of India that the restaurant replicates. I tried many dishes at Benares, after seeing very good reviews on the usual sites. I was most disappointed, to say the least. The lamb chops tasted as if they were cooked in a microwave, and the Mulligatawny soup, even though it can be prepared many different ways, was not like anything I had ever had before. No dish was worth ordering again, and the four of us had tried many different ones.
Not one glass of water or iced tea was refilled without have to ask for it, and we would usually have to wait 3-5 minutes for someone to come by so we could make the request.
Although the pricing was reasonable, this restaurant is now off my list. New York has too many other good places to go.
Amazing food with some unusual options! We got a South Indian curry we'd never heard of. Everything was spiced and delicious!
Once again the quality, variety and value of this Indian buffet was outstanding. And my favorite waiter Lincoln once again took great care of us.
The food was very good. Honestly, one of the best puri we have ever had. Our only complaint was they seated us next to a large party table with a few very loud kids who kept trying to put their fingers in our food (!) - when there were clearly other tables available. Poor choice on their part. But we liked the food and would recommend this place to a friend. Next time we go back, we will be sure to not let them seat us next to a big party.
Great food and service
Benares is a great alternative to the expensive restaurants that dominate the neighborhood. Very good food, terrific service, and a quiet atmosphere keep us coming back. Try the cauliflower appetizer!
The service was quick but once served it took a while to get the waiter back to the table. The malai kofta was great. The chicken vindaloo average. We ordered saffron rice and got regular rice with a couple of peas on it. When I sent it back, I think they just sprinkled some saffron or turmeric on it and brought it back. So it depends on what you order but the price was reasonable for that part of NYC. The nann was great but the samosas so-so.
I enjoyed the pre-theatre menu. It was a delicious meal at a reasonable price. Definitely recommended.
Prix-fixe buffet lunch a real bargain with good choices.
This was not my first visit here. We really loved it the first time. So when my graduating son wanted to have dinner there we did not think twice. It is also good value for New York city.
Decent food but service was very poor. One of the waiters asked multiple times if we wanted to order any drinks-- trying too hard to sell us on the mango lassi. Towards the end of the meal, the waiters came around every ten to fifteen minutes to ask if we were finished with our food.
Pleasant meal but not memorable
Very nice staff , ok ambience, so-so food & overpriced as this is a touristy area.
This is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is always excellent and the service is attentive. I highly recommend Benares.
Wide selection of well prepared Indian cuisine, with many choices not typically found on the usual Indian menu. The service was excellent, and the wine list had a number of well-priced options specially chosen to complement the food. There are meat, fish, vegetarian, and vegan dishes on the menu so there is something for everyone. The restaurant is nicely decorated in modern style and is quite spacious for restaurants in this neighborhood.
The interior was O.K. The food was decent enough, but nothing special.
the food was okay, nicely served -- but they did not honor my Carnegie Hall discount of 15% which kind of bothered me.
The pre theatre menu is excellent value and the food is good. But service is always slow and it takes a while for the food to come out of the kitchen. Be aware of this if you need to get to a show.
Nice calm evening! Delicious food and great service!
Real good find
Reasonable prices and very good food
The most expensive dish. - mixed grill was a bust-very dry meat tandoori oven needs some work
Dal. Lamb with spinach chicken korma were yummy
Highly recommend this gem in nyc
Will be back
Benares is reliably good with food that is more authentic than you might expect for a theater/concert hall area restaurant. Indian families were having dinner the night we were there, and they'll tailor the spice to your palate if you ask. Try something different and you won't be disappointed. We had a "stuffed" paneer appetizer that was new to us, delicious and nuanced. Rogan josh (lamb) and goat in a yoghurt sauce bore no relationship to each other and so were great to share and try. Be sure to get a rice and/or bread, as none comes with any of the dishes. As a wine aficionado, I must tell you that the choices are ridiculously limited; the CDR was a good match with our meal, however. Service is fine, discount cards (Carnegie Hall in our case) are respected, and you will not need to worry about getting out in good time to make your show.
It was OK. Not much atmosphere but it was a quiet night. Staff were fine, but the food was too hot/spicy, even the Korma. And to order poppadoms and get no relishes with them and then have to pay between $8 and $12 each for the Raiti etc to go with them is a rip off. Better indian food elsewhere.
The food was average. The tribeca location was really good when I ate there a few years ago. This didn't meet that standard
Better than expected! We were looking for something close to our hotel and were nervous after reading some of the reviews. It's not upscale trendy like Indian Accent. We ordered grilled shrimp, which were prepared perfectly. Also a mix of other dishes, all flavorful. I'd return.
Food was delicious, ordered mild and it had just a touch of heat to enhance the flavor. Comfortable decor. Excellent and gracious service.
Some of the best Indian food we have had. Will go back agin!
I wasn't hungry enough for the braised goat, but it was tempting! I had lamb instead. My companions had the prix-fix, and had just the right amount of food. Our dishes were based in: red & hot sauce, cream sauce, and spinach sauce. The traditional samosa appetizer was terrific. Good service.
Excellent to exceptional East Indian food with typical impeccable service.
very cold wind when front door opened (choose seat carefully)
If I lived in NYC this would be a frequent treat
Amazing experience. The service was fantastic. I am looking forward to coming again.
Excellent food, many options. Very reasonably priced.
The prix fixe is excellent value and the food was good. The dining room was very hot but they lowered the temperature when we asked.
Fantastic service despite our large group of 11. The staff and maitre'd were incredibly friendly and hospitable and went out of their way to make it a fabulous experience. The food was delicious , plentiful and well prepared and seasoned. I highly recommend this restaurant and have visited several times now. A wonderful experience.
Food was tasty and authentic but it took a long time for a waiter to approach our table and take our order, and it seemed like a good amount of time passed before the food came.
