Good things: very nice bar and excellent Negroni
attentive staff, atmospheric ambiance (mostly in bar)
Not so good: tale for three was positioned awkwardly - left us with view of service area.
Wine - very marked up.
Food: slightly badly advised on side dishes.
Fish dish was quite hard, not quite succulent enough - £34 for a not outstanding plate.
Duck dish was good.
Overall - I think this place is full of expense accounts, not worth the spend for me.

As ever the welcome and service are great and the food as good and inventive as ever - great flavour and appearance, spiced but not overwhelming - you can taste everything.

Seems a little noisier than before - difficult to hear others in our party. Also minor point but if you add items to the set menu like rice and poppadoms just tell us at the time you’re charging for it - happy to pay, just let me know.

Otherwise still in my top 5 favorite places to go in London

Visited recently for my partners birthday . From start to finish it was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails before being seated for dinner. The cocktail menu was vast and the drinks were superb .

We had the a la carte menu which was excellent . Portion sizes for Michelin starred restaurant were very good and the taste and presentation was again wonderful .

The service from the staff was prompt and each course was explained at our table which is always a nice touch .

We couldn’t fault the evening and will definitely return . Obviously the evening was an expensive one but you do get what you pay for and if your wanting to treat a special person then it is a great place to do so . The whole experience is worth every penny

Food is just incredible.

Service was slow to start, waiters were lovely but for the price would expect 5* service.

Still a wonderful place to eat and I would recommend.

We had a very good meal. Our table was in the back room, and many others around us were complaining about the location, but we had a good server and enjoyed the food.

This was a birthday treat for my son and overall was an extremely pleasant experience.
From the moment we arrived we were recognized and greeted with smiles and a friendly but efficient manner. I was a little surprised that, as a disabled person, we had to go back out to the street and next door to take the lift to the restaurant but, again, the matter was dealt with in a friendly manner.
We chose the tasting menu and the food was an absolute delight - flavours and textures working together to create something unique. Yes, this was what we expected from what we had heard but the experience more than matched expectations.
Wait staff were efficient and friendly and paid great attention to detail, explaining each dish with a smile.
The ambience was not as I expected it, this wasn't a church or gastronomy but had a happy buzz of people enjoying a special place. I would happily go again - when I can afford it!

We went for the tasting menu and it was absolutely divine. I went with a friend to celebrate her promotion at work, and even though we had not told the restaurant in advance, the waiter noticed the card and asked what we were celebrating. We told him and then at the end of the meal they brought out a mini celebration dessert with 'Congratulations' written on it, without being prompted by me. I thought this was a lovely touch and was a cherry on top of the incredible service cake. The meal was worth every penny.

This was my third time at Benares but it is a few years since I have been. I was not disappointed! The service was great and the restaurant was quiet when we arrived at 1.45pm but then gradually filled so it was nicely buzzy. We received some lovely nibbles to start with whilst we chose our food, followed by a tasty amuse-bouche. We went for the set menu which has some lovely choices - I went for the scallops and the Tawa plaice, both of which were delicious. Also as part of the deal we had a champagne cocktail which was lovely and I had forgotten about it (I booked a couple of months in advance) so it came as a nice surprise. All in all a fabulous lunch. I took my boyfriend as a surprise as he has wanted to go for many years and never got round to it and he said it was definitely worth the wait. So many delicate and complex flavours. Having travelled in India I also found the food really authentic. We will certainly be going back.

We visited the restaurant in November 2019 and went for the tasting menu with wine pairing. We had booked with open table which had an offer of a free champagne cocktail with the tasting menu but we were not offered this.

Tasting menu was very nice and well presented. The wine pairing was good too.

The service overall was not up to scratch. We were not offered a menu at the start but were asked what drink we wanted - can't make that decision without a menu! 2 of our dishes were served with no explanation of the dish. Dishes were served even when one of us was not at the table and we would expect that dishes are only served when we are both at the table for the explanation of the dish.

We were not offered any tea or coffee with dessert but those sat next to us also having the tasting menu did. We were not provided with a tasting menu to take home with us initially - we had to request this.

We were offered a small extra dessert as we were celebrating a birthday and a small gift which was nice.

Overall, the food was nice and paired nicely with the wine. However as a 1 Michelin star restaurant I had expected the service standard to be much higher.

Enjoyed our visit. Have loved Atul for a long time. Living in Wales has meant we don’t visit London very often. However, have eaten in his East restaurants on P & O Cruises on many occasions. I do think that the meals on the cruise ships have been better and certainly more to chose from. We had the £35 a head meal. The wine we chose to accompany it, was delicious.

Lovely restaurant with well thought out decor. A little loud but service just great. Everyone personable and made you feel really a valued guest. I’m not an expert in Indian food but I thoroughly enjoyed everything from the tasting menu and felt the flavors were authentic, delicate and well married to local produce. We had wine pairing with tasting menu which happened to be a highlight of the evening. Well conceived in matching food and offering wines from countries one might not be familiar with. It was also one of the less expensive dinners out in London for a high end restaurant. I would definitely go back and recommend it to friends visiting London as well for a very pleasant dining experience.

Phenomenal. We came here 6 months ago and the food was outstanding. This time it was on a different level. We were informed there is a new head chef and has revised the whole menu. We chose the 6 course taster menu and chose the prestigious wine selection. Each course just got better and better. Hats off to you, Benares - faultless!!!

The modern Indian menu on offer at Benares is as stellar as ever with prices to match. If you like seafood there are both excellent starter and main course options; the scallops and crab dosa come highly recommended. Main course portion size a balance with the cuisine, which is delicately spiced. Otherwise an extensive wine list and some interest cocktails will keep your hips from getting too dry. The atmosphere is mellow; with the restaurant being semi lit due to the lack of windows. The menus initially took a long time to arrive, but after that the service was well judged without being over the top. Unless you are used to spending £100 a head, keep it for special occasions.

Having booked Benares well in advance as I have wanted to visit the restaurant for some time I was disappointed that on arrival we were given a table in what appeared to be the wine cellar away from the main restaurant. It was very cold to the point of being uncomfortable so I requested that we were given another table, the manager offered to turn down the air conditioning and said he would see about finding another table, having sat for a further 10 minutes or so we felt it just wasn’t acceptable to be cold and uncomfortable and seated away from the atmosphere of the main restaurant so asked to sit in the bar whilst they found us another table. We did eventually get a new table but by this time it was getting rather late and we felt the occasion had already been spoiled by this initial experience. The food itself was good but not out of this world and not what I expected from an establishment with this reputation. I will not be returning such as shame as this was booked for my wifes 40th birthday and it was not the experience I thought we would get.
