BellyQ Ratings and Reviews
Great place for a small to medium sized group. We did a tasting menu for 5 and were able to pick different appetizers, entrees, and other items for the table. Served plenty of food for the entire group and had quite the variety on this menu. Very good Japanese whiskey on the menu as well.
Meet friends for dinner and had a great time starting with the awesome drinks at the bar. Very unique cocktails. Hostess never rushed us to get to our table but when we did the wait staff was unbelievable. Explained every dish we asked about as if they created it themselves. Very attentive. Foods is beyond delicious. Desserts are a must try.... words cannot describe how deliciously decadent the donuts are. Can’t wait to go back again.
The "manhatten" from the specialty drink menu was great. We ordered the scallion pancake appetizer. I thought the three spreads were on the small side. The Korean short ribs were really tasty and melted in my mouth. The duck had good flavor, but if you like crispy duck skin, this is not the dish for you. Eric, our server, was spot on. He was never too far away to ask if we needed anything, but not too close to suffocate us. Overall, dinner and service was great! I will be back!
Food was great but service was extremely slow. We waited 35 minutes for two bowls of food. We were in a hurry and had someone waiting on us elsewhere so we asked how long it would be, got a quick answer of "a moment" and he walked away immediately. Didn't get it until 15 min after that exchange.
The grill table was terrible and a total rip off. I am so disappointed Ate here in the past and loved it. So much so that we took out of town guests here. Such a huge mistake. Service was terrible. The food was just so so. I was embarrassed to have chosen it. Our bill was $400 for 4 people and it was one of the worst meals in recent memory.
The food was excellent. Very slow service was a disappointment. From our cocktail order to dinner entrees, we felt neglected. We nearly lost our appetites waiting for the main course. It was not even busy that night (most of the restaurant was empty), so that's not an excuse.
Ate here with a group of friends before a Blackhawks game. Appetizers in the bar (dumplings, sticky wings) were great, and they had an impressive selection of craft brews and cocktail specials. Main courses (Korean ribs, shrimp hummus, smoked duck breast) were very good and great to pass around. Servers were knowledgeable and very engaging.
A real gem in Chicago. A few dishes we had that I can highly recommend:
1. Crab starters ... small portion though so don't take it to share. :-)
2. Lemongrass Salmon ... perfectly seasoned (has taste, but not too spicy) and perfectly cooked with a crispy outer crust. A little bit on the small side, so add in a side if you are extra hungry.
3. Korean Baby Back ribs ... melt in your mouth good, and very filling.
4. Sticky Rice ... BellyQ classic ... you have to try it
5. Broccolli / Mushroom side ... an unexpected combination of flavors that actually go very well together.
6. Chocolate Pot de Creme for desert ... bottom is a thick delicious chocolate pudding with a scoop of Soft Serve Vanilla ice cream and fried won ton noodles on top. Save room for this, it's fantastic.
Service once we were seated was excellent. Waiter was super attentive. The food did take a little bit to arrive. I didn't say anything but 3 minutes later he brought out #5 above "sorry the food took longer than I wanted ... this is on the house."
The only "strange" thing was when we arrived. We arrived 15 mins before our reservations. Despite there being several seats available, somehow they kind of avoided seating us until exactly the time of our reservation (to the minute) and I've read in other reviews the same critique.
But overall a GREAT dining experience and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Been here before. Good isn't great, chef Kim really knows what he's doing. Love the Korean play on the Chinese dishes. Ordered the duck, Korean beef ribs, and friend rice. All were excellent. Same with the duck egg rolls and fried chicken apps. Sides were the broccoli and potato salad which were awesome. Would go back in a heartbeat. Also was extremely easy to get a reservation on a Sunday when everywhere else was booked.
We made a reservation at 6:00 PM at the restaurant and called to move it to 6:30, but they were inflexible and offered only a 7:45 table. Since our reservation was guaranteed with a credit card we decided to change out plans and rush to the 6:00 PM reservation only to find that the restaurant was nearly empty until the time we left at 7:40. They had more than half of the tables free. Why couldn't they move our reservation? This just seems to me as a lack of politeness and service attitude.
Our server was very polite and efficient and food was way too spicy and felt uninspired. (we've come to this restaurant before and we've had amazing food.)
I guess this was just a very off day for Belly Q, but from this last experience we don't feel very inspired to return.
Overall, Belly Q was a fantastic place for authentic Asian BBQ. The dishes are all super unique and they have a wide variety of options, especially if you are vegan or gluten free. The appetizers are a nice sampling size to split with one other person, and the rest of the menu is designed to share "family-style," which was perfect for two!
The atmosphere is very casual but feels upscale and the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgable of every dish on the menu. The staff was also very honest about their dishes and made sure to inform us about particular items that some people either love, or don't...which was much appreciated! I would highly recommend trying Belly Q as the food is fantastic, the staff is wonderful, and you actually get great value for the money you spend. Reasonably priced and a great date spot, if you're looking for one!
Loved every bite of the foods. Egg rolls were crunchy, delicious and filled w flavor. The lamb and smoked duck breasts were elegant and pick the plate clean. I would order both again. The complimentary glass of proceco was a fun celebration for our anniversary
