Bellanico Restaurant and Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
This is a very nice place but the food was a little overkill. I felt like every single dish we had was close, but too much. My favorite was the beet ravioli, a dish I had never had before but it was very good. Again, it was overdone by being doused in poppy seeds...maybe an entire tablespoon. The foie gras was ice cold and cut in huge, rich slices on top of tiny crositini. The steak was very mediocre. My boyfriend ordered a white fish covered inn prosciutto which we sent back for being raw. It was incredibly salty but he ate it and later got sick. The desserts were overbearing. I think the service and people are great, the menu just needs simplified.
Love Bellanico and would recommend it to others. . We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing which we have had before. This is an outstanding value; the food is creative and the wines are usually delicious.
Recent visit for dinner on 2/13 missed the mark. Many of the options were high in fat and didn't include any vegetables. Smoked Trout Cannoli with sumac and horseradish was just too strong and had a bitter aftertaste. Burrata was bland and served with a tiny dab of jam. Prosciutto wrapped ono was dry and too salty even though the fish was served fairly rare.
Braised beef sugo and the cauliflower fritters were exceptional. Beet and ricotta ravioli was good but dry inside even though the butter sauce was generous.
Usually I enjoy all of the wines served on the pairing menu. This time I thought the Vermentino I Fiori to be really medicinal. I drank a little of it and told the server that I didn't like it. She didn't offer to replace it with another wine. This isn't typical of the accommodating and solicitous service that we usually receive at Bellanico.
Overall this is a great neighborhood restaurant with an innovative menu and terrific wine selection.
I love this place. The food is always excellent and the service has improved a lot over the years. The red wines they offer are good, but I do wish they had a wider selection of white wine styles. I find their's very lean and very dry, primarily from Southern Europe, Sicily, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia. I know there are better wines from these regions with more fruit.
This is an old favorite of our family - we've been coming to Bellanico for about 10 years. We love the food, the ambiance and the wine. The service this time wasn't amazing - the snippy and disorganized girl at the front of the restaurant lacked the charm and professionalism that we usually find here. But that was a one-time issue - everything else was fantastic as always. The wines are yummy and interesting, and the food is just delicious. We'll be back!
The food at Bellanico is great -- really interesting. I had the malfatti and a salad and it was a great meal. However, the restaurant has its tables way too close together. When we go back, we will ask for one of the two central tables instead of sitting along the wall. Despite the traffic going by these tables, at least you won't be tooth to jowl with your neighbor!
A lovely neighborhood restaurant that rightly deserves its Michelin recommendation. Have been here a number of times. The Tasting Menu is fun and a good value, especially nice combined with the wine pairing. The service is usually excellent but the last time disappointing, long wait between some courses. Hopefully it was just an off night as we enjoy this restaurant very much.
Honestly we really wanted to like this place. Went for restaurant week and ordered the pre fixe menu with wine pairings...first course was very good, second okay, on the third the waitress completely forgot our wines and our dishes were given to us cold! Haven't had service that bad in quite awhile when the bill is over $100...not worth it.
We went for Oakland restaurant week and got the four course pre-fix menu with the wine pairings. We were late because of bay bridge traffic but they still sat us and we didn't feel rushed. The attention to detail with the pairings was great and the food presentation was excellent. The desserts were our favorite part! The waitress was also extremely attentive and fun. Unfortunately my friend's steak was served cold so she didn't enjoy her main dish.
Friends and I wanted to celebrate Restaurant Week, and I was taken in by the delicious multi-course meal described by Bellanico. So many tastes, textures and seasonings were represented! The care taken with each dish was evident, the wait staff was sweet, responsive and impeccably clear, and we had a blast. I can't wait for a special occasion to return! (Or maybe even... a made-up special occasion, since the prices were reasonable for the excellent quality ;) )
Love this restaurant. The food is always on point and and love the staff. They were really accommodating when I brought my baby with a stroller. Its a small place but we made the stroller fit in back. In terms of the food, the menu changes often with what's seasonal. We came during Oakland Restaurant Week and the prix fixe menu had a variety of yummy morsels to choose from. Its great restaurant for a date, special occasion, or just because. Can't recommend it enough.
Disgraceful. I have been to this restaurant several times now, and every time I leave wondering why it's so popular. I find the food to be very hit or miss. Tonight, great salad, awful entree. The server was great. However, the food coming out was crazy slow, and they'd jammed some extra tables down the middle so that the waitstaff had trouble getting by, and I spent half the evening leaning in to let them by. We ordered right away, didn't linger, and minutes after they brought coffee, they asked us to give up the table for a guest who'd just arrived. Seriously?! Since they'd jammed so many tables in there and there was no place to wait, we had to just scoop our stuff up and leave, coffee half drunk, and they never even brought us our leftovers. I understand they can't always control the kitchen, but they could have at least offered to comp us something. I'd like to give two stars for the server and salad, but this was a birthday dinner, and they should have done better. Never again.
I took out-of-town friends to Bellanico for an excellent brunch. We were able to walk there from my house - good exercise before you confront the scrumptous brunch selections. The food was exceptional, wonderfully prepared from fresh ingredients and the service was impecable. The noise level was find but the restaurant was half-full. During dinner it is aloud, lively place. The food is consistently excellent and reflects the talents of the kitchen by providing interesting twists on traditional Italian fare. Bellanico is always a winner.
Restaurant week meal at Bellanico did not disappoint! We enjoyed the four courses and all were very good. The dessert sampler was exceptional. As always our two biggest favorites are the caulifower fritters (not to be missed) and the malfatti- how can you go wrong with sage, butter and cheese. Thank you Bellanico for a consistently great experience with knowledgeable staff. I always get a good wine recommendation when I ask too.
Bellanico without hesitation is great! We were a dinner party of 5 adults who had never been there before. We loved everything about this restaurant, especially the exquisite food. From the time you enter, you are greeted by a delightful hostess who immediately makes you feel welcome. The staff is professional, attentive, warm, and courteous. The highlight of course is the food, everything we ordered was superbly cooked, beautifully presented, and most of all delicious! I had the wine braised beef short ribs that were succulent and cooked to perfection served over creamy polenta, crisp vegetables, and a marrow sauce that’s bursting with flavor.. I am still raving about this dish. There is an extensive wine list to choose from, which we also enjoyed.
We all decided that we would go back to Bellanico in a heartbeat and it will be soon.
Sad that their sister restaurant, Aperto, on Potrero Hill in the City, is no longer with us. BUT, very happy we can still come over to Bellanico before Berkeley Rep -- great, varied, affordable, delicious menu and diverse, interesting wine list. Friendly service as well -- love this little place, and kudos to the owners for many years of enjoyable, high quality meals at both locations.
We met friends whom we have not seen in over a decade. The appetizers and the salumi board were wonderful. The burrata was fresh and the cured meats were excellent. The fig jam was a great counterpoint to the richness. The pastas, gnocchi and malfatti, were on-point and seasoned perfectly. It was well-sauced and portioned correctly. Could not leave without the cheesecake which was tart and not-to-sweet. We lingered far too long and our friends from Greece appreciated the European style service and enjoyed the leisurely pace of the meal.
