Bellanico Restaurant and Wine Bar
Bellanico is a continuation of Chris Shepherd & Elizabeth Frumusa’s successful restaurant in San Francisco, Aperto in Potrero Hill. Bellanico is a neighborhood restaurant located in the Glenview district of Oakland. The name Bellanico is derived from their daughters’ nicknames, Bella & Nico.
The Bellanico staff take great pride in food, service and wine. Jonathan Luce, Chef, serve rustic Italian cuisine that changes seasonally. They are dedicated to serving the best seasonal, local, sustainable and organic products that they can find.
Bellanico features Pitman Farms Chicken, Prather Ranch Meat, Duroc Pork and only wild caught fish and seafood. It also features a wine bar offering Old World wines with an emphasis on Italian wines. There are more than 25 wines by the glass & 6 different flights of wine.
Everything our group ordered was wonderful.
What a wonderful experience! We ordered the 4-course meal and an extra two dishes. Everything was great! The food was presented beautifully and was served in appropriate portions. The service was outstanding.
Great food. Variety of options for everyone, even the health conscious. I had the panini and it was delicious and filling for a moderate price. I’d go again when I’m in the area.
Absolutely will return, the flavors are amazing, as is the service.
The menu offers wonderful flavors and beautiful presentation. The variety that comes out of a small kitchen is impressive. It is a local favorite but worth a visit by others.
For us, Bellanico has been a special occasion spot ever since it opened. Food and service have always been top notch. Right now, the noise is too loud for comfortable conversation, and the pricing is steeper than it ought to be by two or three dollars per item, especially since portions are relatively small. Wine-by-the-glass is over-priced by at least 25% for a very small pour.
Will we continue to return? As I said, the food & service are excellent, so we'd have to weigh the other factors. In other words, not sure.
The service and food were outstanding. The noise level makes conversation difficult. The pots and pan noise from the open kitchen is ver loud and competes with its the taped music. We will return but will request outside seating next time.
Always delicious, consistently good. A great spot in the Glenview neighborhood for brunch, lunch or dinner.
I had the tasting menu. Not much explanation about the food nor the paired wine by the waiteresses, unless you ask specifically (I guess). Food tends to be on the rich and salty side, but nonetheless tasty. Not bad consider the generous portion of everything. I will come back for the casual weekend type of dinner!
We always love to come to Bellanico for dinner. It's become a Sunday night date tradition. It's delicious whether you choose the tasting menu or order from the dinner menu. The ambiance is cute and romantic but at the same time energetic and fun. We are big natural wine fans, and the wine menu at Bellanico is very extensive. The goat cheesecake is one of the best desserts ive ever eaten!
Last minute reservation with friends visiting from wine country but this neighborhood gem makes a BIG impression - they knocked it clear out of the park. We loved the fritters, the malfatti, the roast chicken, the wine. This meal will be discussed for much time to come and rivals any world class restaurants in Sonoma and Napa. And the ambiance and service can’t be beat! Top marks for every detail.
This has been a favorite for a long time, but we have gone there for lunch with friends and visitors from out of town. This time it was just my wife and I for dinner and it did not disappoint. Judy has the fregola salad with figs and olives, followed by a spicy tagliolini with smoked bacon and arugula. I had a black lentil salad, then the most tender potato gnocchi I have ever had, comparable to those Judy had in Rome at the Caffee Pantheon, our previous best rendition of this demanding dish. It was served with a Gorgonzola sauce ana walnuts. Passed up the great selection of desserts for espressos. It exceeded expectations. The room is “lively” and could use some sound deadening, but is comfortable and enjoyable. We will go back.
The food was good and the staff was friendly enough, although our server seemed to be a bit inexperienced. The place was dark and in desperate need of updating. By 6:30 pm on a Saturday, the restaurant was totally filled up. The noise level was so loud that I couldn't even hear my own voice, let alone my dining partner's. We were so uncomfortable that we left. I would order take outs (if I am in the neighborhood again) but will not have a sit-down dinner in the restaurant.
Great little place in the Dimond district. However the service can be a bit “what do you want ?!”
Very slow service and food was either too bland or over-salted.
The food is fabulous and service top notch. Great selection of wines and drinks. I have yet to have a bad meal here. Highly recommend.
Met a work colleague for dinner . She is vegetarian, I’m not. Lovely tasting menu with vegetarian options; 4 courses. Dinner was delicious, warm, and filling. I had the risotto and loved it.
Wonderful neighborhood Italian/Mediterranean with unique and creative dishes that work!
Service was good. Disappointed in the corn soup. It tasted like the corn was from a can. The ambiance is nice but it is noisy
One of my favorites
First time there, was a dinner for my birthday on a Saturday night. We were a little early, but our table was ready and we got a warm welcome. Ordered quite a bit of the menu and everything was creative and delicious. I've seen Yelp reviews critical of service, but no complaints here at all. Our charming server initially didn't know it was my birthday, but when she found out she comped one of the 2 corkage fees and my dessert. As a (cough) older group we got started at 6:30 and saw the dining room thin out a bit, wondering how popular Bellanico is. By 8:00 the room was full again and lively. Early on we saw families, later there were dating couples and groups. Glad to see a well-run neighborhood restaurant thriving. Highly recommended.
The food was great, and the service was better. We really enjoyed on our date night, (we have three kids and treasure any and all time that we get to be alone,) the amazing variety of flavors and regional Italian specialties. My wife loved the Southern wine flight varietals.
Great service (they made my grandmother feel really special on her birthday). Waiters and waitresses are very nice. Food is delicious too!
Tired food that might have been interesting 25 years ago. Their signature dish (beet riccotta ravioli) was not well-executed. Service was off-hand at best. Wine list was pretty good, but not great. Meh...
Our celebration restaurant. We've been to Bellanico a dozen times, and are always delighted with their ever-changing menu. I always have Burata, and it's never done the same way twice.
Our new favorite restaurant. Excellent food. Best duck my girlfriend ever had. Excellent dessert selection too!
We celebrated my birthday at Bellanico and we had a lovely dinner. We started with the Housemade Burrata and then shared two full-size pasta entrees. We saw other guests taking advantage of their tasting menu, which looked great, but as we were interested in entrees that weren’t meat-focused we chose the pastas instead. We had the black nettle and squash blossom risotto that had a light pesto cream sauce and also the pepper, jalapeño and tomato spaghetti. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, full of flavor and complimented each other. We will definitely plan to return to Bellanico soon!
We always enjoy our meals at Bellanico! We joined in with friends, who we have introduced to this restaurant, for a lovely evening of good food. We had the cauliflower fritters, a delightful green salad, with a plum, and then one of our group had the pork chop, one had the beef cheeks, one the risotto and I had the ahi over eggplant. All lovely! One joy of this restaurant is the changing menu...as I see several of the dishes we had this weekend aren't on the menu for the coming week. (So, we have to go back!)
Love everything about this place except the noise level. Between the loud bar patrons and loud bartender and the ever increasing volume from the other diners it’s difficult to enjoy a meal with friends. If they could just improve the acoustics this would be my forever first choice.
A neighborhood gem! The three of us had the set dinner menu with wine pairing. Our server was terrific as she explained each pairing in detail. Each coarse complimented the other and the ambiance was perfect for dinner conversation.
Service was great. Wine was yummy. (Connor was helpful with our choice). We shared a couple of appetizers, each had an entree and shared two desserts. Food was very good. Enjoyed the space and our friendly and personable server. Definitely worth a return visit!
Bellanico has flavor down! A great, casual but elegant place to dine. I believe it is basically organic, but not sure, so I didn't check that box. I highly recommend it!
Food and service are always (I'm a longtime patron) very good, and sometimes superb.
Terrific neighborhood restaurant. Great service- food is very consistent. Had pasta dishes, pork chops and duck. All were very good.
Great service, delicious food, a little jewel in the neighborhood
Bella Nico is one of my favorite local restaurants. Not fussy or pretentious, just excellent food and an elegant but warm and welcoming vibe.
Went here for brunch. Had steak and eggs, French toast, and fritatta. Everything was delicious. One of the best brunches I’ve ever had. Wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Highly recommend.
When we arrived they were going to sit us inside at a middle table near the kitchen. We could already hear the dishes clanging, so we asked if we could be seated outside. The maitre's graciously accommodated us and seated us outside under the heat lamps. I asked for a wine recommendation and was not disappointed--stellar choice. We shared a number of plates inclusive of the Hawaiian Tombo with white beans (really good!), grilled radicchio (5 stars), squash blossoms (so - so). Will definitely go again.
Delicious Venetian style food - as good as any we had in Venice, perhaps even better. Don't miss the "casunzei"! Parking is not easy, so go early enough to be able to find parking. We paired this with a gondola ride on Lake Merritt (at sundown) - absolutely perfect evening! They should offer this as a package!
Great food! Friendly staff, the young woman at the bar is simply amazing: warm, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu. I grab lunch at the bar, bring guests and conduct job interviews here during slower times. I really like this place.
The four-course tasting menu for $46 is a true bargain. First course - seared ahi tuna, second course - pastrami ravioli, third course - skirt steak, dessert - Florentine donut. Each dish was well executed and presented by our waitress with a flair and with good humor. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
