Bella Trattoria Italiana Ratings and Reviews
I love Bella. I've been there several times, and it's consistently high quality. Someday I'll try something else, but so far I've never been able to get farther than their pastas, which are some of the best I've ever had. Last week I had the maccarune, which was hearty, slightly spicy and perfect for a dismal winter night. My vegetarian partner always has multiple interesting pasta options, which we greatly appreciate. The portions are generous, but we always leave without leftovers because they are so darn good we can't stop eating. My one small niggle is with their bread, which I find a bit too soft and squishy to stand beside the hearty pasta.
One of the best features about Bella, besides the food, is how they manage to make a small, pretty standard San Francisco restaurant room feel like a romantic getaway. Judicious use of lighting, candles, and closed shutters give the place a mysterious feel, making me forget the obnoxiously busy intersection of 3rd and Geary is just steps away. It's always busy, but somehow secluded. A Friday night plate of pasta at Bella feels like an event. Good job!
Bella has always been a reliable go-to neighborhood place, but they seem to have stepped up their game, possibly in connection with taking over the space next door which, though very awkward feeling, is well worth a visit, since it has roughly the same menu, with the welcome addition of a burger and a TV set to whatever sports are on. So you get to choose--Italian gastro/pub or trattoria, and you won't go wrong either way.
This restaurant is so popular that the service has slipped, for example, after the entree, the table wasn't removed of crumbs when the dessert menu was plonked on the dirty table. Of course this negative can be easily corrected. On the whole, I would recommend this trattoria to friends.
We had a very early dinner with our 5 year old in tow. Ordered two appetizers and two entrees and everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. First, Risotto stuffed w mozzarella and Brussels sprouts. Brussels were fantastic! Then carbonara and the rigatoni w sausage and red cream sauce. They were both great. My son even loved the carbonara as well as their bread w olive oil. Very good service overall!
I have a gluten allergy. When doing internet research, I came upon this restaurant. As I live out of town, I wanted to call to ensure they do have gf menu items and work to prevent cross-contamination. I called twice, no answer either time. The second time I left a message with my number and the reason for my call. It's three days later and I still haven't received a call back.
Having booked the New Years Eve Menu for 6 people at 8.30pm we arrived in good time and asked to go wait in the bar down the road, they would come and get us. No-one arrived, so when we walked back in, the restaurant was full and we were led into the bar area. The menu that we had booked wasnt available so we were given the general menu. Whilst the food was good, we just felt that they had overbooked and we were an after thought. Not the best experience to enjoy New Years Eve in San Fran.
Excellent Italian food in the Inner Richmond district of SF. Very friendly management and staff, a nice wine list and reasonable prices by San Francisco restaurant standards. They even gave us a complimentary panacotta dessert. Our only complaint is that it is so dark inside that it is like eating by candlelight in a cave. Many diners, including us, were forced to use their cell phone lights to read the menu, see what was being served, etc. Not sure why they feel compelled to keep the place so dark but it is the only reason we would hesitate to go back.
Everyone who works here is really friendly and warm. Great service without being intrusive.
The food was fabulous- we had a large range of options- all 4 of us getting different things and all were perfect. Lovely wine options and the waiter made a great mid-price range selection of what would be good with out dinners
My wife and I are regulars at Bella. I fell in love with the general manager/owner‘s great menu items. Authentic Italian food delivered in style. It’s nice to go to a restaurant where everyone knows who you are when you arrive. Always formally treated by the owner and the wait staff. Romantic atmoshere much like Venice.
Excellent atmosphere, service and food! The food was well portioned and of course, delicious. Our server Aris was kind enough to provide us with two glasses of prosecco to toast to our 7 year anniversary. They set the mood with dimmed lights as the evening continues. The food was paced perfectly and we never stopped enjoying each other's company. Bella Trattoria Italiana never disappoints!
I will go back here, and have already recommended it to friends. We were able to get a reservation here, in an area where most restaurants do not take reservations. The location (inner Richmond near GG Park) was convenient and has available street parking. They offer a lovely Primitivo, which I appreciated even more because my daughter and son-in-law work for his family winery (Domenico), and it compared favorably to theirs. My husband and I are vegans, and there were delicious options for us as well as for the omnivores. Our server was great.
This is a charming neighborhood jewel. Better during the week than compared to our weekend experience when the Dreamforce visitors descended upon the restaurant.
Service: the initial beauty of a small neighborhood restaurant, which sets the initial mood for the evening, is how timely and warmly you are greeted by your host. Our host was most professional, actually splendid and made us feel extremely welcomed.
We had our same waiter as the first time. He was superb. Impeccable. Professional. Charming. Totally on top of it, never intrusive.
Food and wine: carbonara and puttanesca pasta dishes were again fabulous, neither too salty nor overbearing with sauce. The pasta itself was perfectly prepared and didn't fall apart. The large grilled vegetable/charcuterie platter is a must-share among four. Beautiful presentation.
The wine list is extensive for a small restaurant and offers a plethora of well known and more obscure wine varietals. The list will not disappoint.
We will be coming back with more friends to introduce them to this charming, cozy Inner Richmond respite.
Love this neighborhood GEM
I'm so lucky to live near this wonderful restaurant that I think everybody in town should know about. It's more than a neighborhood gem, really. From start to finish, the food and service are beyond compare. The food at this authentic and delicious Italian restaurant can't be beat. Right now they are serving a seasonal dish that is absolutely scrumptious. Its the lightest, most delicious ravioli, paperthin, but full of flavor and butter and filled with a dreamy pumpkin ricotta filling that is mouthwatering topped with a sprinkle of melt in your mouth fried basil, believe it or not >> biscotti, sun-dried tomatoes, a slight sprinkle of Parmesan and something else I can't think of right now as I'm dreaming of this delightful dish.
A beautiful hidden neighborhood gem with a charming interior decor reminding us more of a hip cafe/bistro in France or Italy, not the Inner Richmond!
FOOD: presentation is beautiful. Our carbonara and puttanesca pasta dishes were sublime, neither skimpy nor oversalted. The alligator carpaccio is worth trying with its citrus forward notes. Alligator in general is quite bland, but this place does an outstanding job. The bread however left little to be desired: stale and lifeless. Save your calories for the entrees.
WINE: an all Italian listing with interesting, more obscure wine varietals alongside the more popular ones. A well rounded selection for such a small place.
SERVICE: The restaurant was slammed with a full house and shortstaffed on a Friday night leading to long, long waits for table service. My server forgot my wine order so I had to remind him after he brought our appetizer. We noticed that one couple left after waiting too long for service. We also noticed that the table next to us who arrived after us and who ordered after us were served first. So the front of the house clearly needs more help. Our server was polite, professional and apologetic, but the damage was already done.
CONCLUSION: Prepare for long table waits and awkward but warm, friendly service. Nonetheless, the food is outstanding. We plan to go back on a weeknight, keeping our fingers crossed that the table service kinks diminish.
This place is a lovely find. A real gem.
