Bell Book & Candle
Crazy slow service when it wasn’t busy
Great room, lovely ambience, mediocre food. Probably best to have a drink at the nice bar and move on to something else for dinner. Too bad because the room is lovely.
Delicious patty melt with carmelized onions
Excellent service, ambiance and food. The bartender/hostess was wonderful.
Great ambiance, excellent drinks, really good food. It should be more popular than it is.
One of our favorite restaurants to frequent in NYC for so many reasons! :-)
Love this place, as always!!
warm, cosy and inviting. Christmas decorations are pretty. Food nice, and fresh
Holiday dinner. A great experience, beautiful food
This place is fabulous! The food is excellent and nicely priced. Right now, they have a cute holiday vibe that makes the restaurant feel cozy and fun. I have been here twice now and both times were equally delicious. Service was not so great on this last visit, with inattention by the waiter...hopefully it was just an off night as previously it was excellent. I will definitely go back.
This our third year dining at Bell Book and Candle for their traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Will be back again next year and, hopefully, some times in between.
We came to Bell Book & Candle for Thanksgiving dinner. The restaurant was decorated like a cozy Christmas home—fireplace, pillows, blankets—it was lovely and created such a nice ambiance for our holiday dinner. They seated us right away, and the service was good, not overly friendly, but good. They served three courses: salad or soup, main dish, and apple pie dessert. Ultimately, all the food was great, with the highlights being the sweet potatoes and apple pie. However for the fixed menu price of $55, I was a little surprised at the portions. It was enough, but I just expected more for a holiday feast... only 1 roll per person was offered with the first course—I would’ve liked another with the turkey and gravy... the apple pie slice was pretty small with only a teaspoon size scoop of ice cream... overall, I would still go again and recommend, but it’d be nice to get a little more for what you pay for. With drinks and everything it was still about $95 a person. Still I appreciate their hospitality to serve others on a family holiday.
Great food and very comfortable place
Quaint, good food, quiet until about 7pm. After 7, not too loins and Good music and appropriate for the atmosphere. Would go again. Nice location.
Everything was fresh and tasy and service was spot on.
Everything in this restaurant is superb! Service was impeccable. The food was outstanding! I had the Rock Shrimp Fettuccine and the Brussel Sprout appetizer. I wanted seconds of both, they were that good! Highly recommended!
BB&C accommodated our group of 10 with a private table toward the back of the restaurant. What a wonderful time, superb meal, and terrific wine list. While some of us were late arriving (rainy weather), the host remained unperturbed and kind.
The food was pretty great and the ambiance was nice. It definitely wasn’t too avant garde, but it was intimate and nice and tasty.
I’ve been to brunch a few times the drinks and food are delicious.
I am so glad my friend recommended Bell, Book and Candle for Sunday brunch. This is my second time having visited the establishment and the staff is always warm, accommodating, gracious and amazing. The ambiance is great and I will refer friends for future brunch plans. Thank-you for such an excellent experience.
This was my second time at Bell Book & Candle. I love the menu, service and wine choices. I did find the noise level a bit loud for conversation. Actually it was one very loud guest at the next table who wanted to make sure she was heard! Maybe next time, I need to ask for a booth in towards the back. I do love the restaurant and will definitely return again soon.
It was very pleasant and not noisy at all... food was good also
Server was great.
Charming restaurant and bar. The food was fantastic and we really enjoyed the fresh salad and vegetables grown on the roof of the restaurant. Service was very good. Decor was beautiful and welcoming. It was a bit noisy, but we were able to talk comfortably.
We were waiting for our friend who was stuck on the subway. Bartender was wonderful, and the other staff were very accommodating.
Plus dollar oysters at the bar!
Not what I was expecting. Very little food for 125.00 for 3 people. Service and ambiance was very good.
The space is fun, the food would be pretentious if it wasn't executed so nicely. Solid flavors, intelligent preparations and a menu which was properly ambitious but not overly so. A very enjoyable meal, and we will be back.
I have loved Bell Book & Candle for many years. Unfortunately, the food has gone down in overall quality. The roasted veggie plate they use to serve was fresh, tasty and featured so many different vegetables that were in season. I have tried the veggies in romesco broth on multiple occasions and it continues to be tasteless and ill prepared. The drunken bean dip also didn't taste freshly made and was served cold. There aren't many veggie options overall and it's a shame when the options they have has diminished in freshness, taste, and quality.
Great taste and good price / performance.
The starters were of very high quality and the main courses were outstanding.
We hope to be able to visit again in the future.
Love this place. Service is always friendly, relaxed, and attentive. Food is always excellent and very fresh, with unusual little twists to discover; who knew deviled eggs could be fried?! The atmosphere is homey and quiet...we could actually have a conversation at the height of friday dinner hour. The lovely staff just kick all of that over the top.
Our party of 5 all Had a good meal. Liked this lively west village restaurant. A bit Loud, but you can sit in the back which is much quieter. Took a long x to get our meal over 85 mins between appetizer + entree. Had a fun time ! Looks like a fun bar.
It was magical. The food was delicious and the drinks were awesome. Thank you.
Lovely little gem of a place. Great happy hour. The house wine was delicious and generous. Food was amazing. Would definitely go there again.
We stumbled on this place a few years back and make every attempt to come when we are in town. We have never been disappointed!
I went to this restaurant last year, shortly after it opened, and loved it. But when I went two nights ago, it was a disaster. The food courses varied from bland to vile-tasting. The service was unbelievably bad. When over 30 minutes elapsed after our appetizer with no sign of the entrees coming, and no attention from our server, I finally had to get up, find the server, and ask what the delay was. After that the entrees finally came, but with no explanation for the delay. The restaurant was almost empty, which made the wait even more mystifying. If the food had been good, perhaps the wait might have been worth it, but it was dreadful. My salmon was utterly flavorless; the accompanying spinach was served in a solid lump and tasted as if it had been sauteed in rancid butter. (My appetizer, prosciutto, was dark and dry and tasted of death.) I told good friends about my experience, and they had been to the restaurant the week before and were equally disappointed. None of us are going back. Sorry to report this, and I rarely go out of my way to write about unsatisfying experiences, but the owners, management, and cooks at this place need to be called to task.
Very slow service for a Monday night when empty !
This is really a Pub - bit in the best of possible ways. There are larger booth tables that can accommodate 7 or 8 people. There's a surprising amount of natural light given it is in the basement (skylights above the booth tables in the back). The food was far better than you would expect at a pub.
