Beer Baron Whisky Bar & Kitchen - Oakland
If you're curious about sampling spirits and want to try something different from wine and enjoy a good meal to go with them oh, this is the place to go.
Wonderful brunch spot with fun and funky menu. Sold neighborhood spot; will indeed by back!
Always a pleasure! This place has great food and a really wonderful staff members. The tables are a little bit sticky but that’s OK. The drink list is extensive, with tons of beers, emails, Pilsner’s, etc. to choose from.
Happy hour is a must as well!!
Somewhat loud, but consistent with the college feel. Fun place, great beer selection, outstanding service, and tasty food. Recommend
Been here several times, and have always enjoyed it, but this time the service was really poor, forgetful, slow, and unapologetic. While it was Valentines evening, it wasn’t busy enough to justify the service.
Wonderful staff and a great whisky selection, plus a fun patio that is dog-friendly. It’s a perfect date night place.
They did not honor reservation . We waited a long time.
Took my daughter and her friends who are students at Cal Berkeley here for my daughter's birthday brunch/lunch. The food was so yummy and the service was amazing! Our waitress did a great job accommodating the large group. When there was a slight hiccup with our order, the waitress brought out an extra, favorite appetizer without us even asking for it. It was the perfect spot and we had an awesome time!
Nice friendly convenient place, with plenty of seating and open to dogs on the patio.
Thank you. We enjoyed our visit and would come back again.
I had a decent experience. However, our server was a little forgetful. Additionally, I saw staff petting a dog and it did not appear that they washed their hands afterward. That was a huge turn off.
The service was very amateurish. The menu was poorly designed. For example, when I ordered the kale and quinoa salad the server asked me, "Is that all you want?" I told him I also wanted to order the Mac and cheese entree. We had previously ordered cocktails and they came almost simultaneously with the first round of food, which included entrees ordered by the other three diners and the salad I had ordered. When we ordered cocktails there was nothing on the menu that looked like a started, nor were we offered one. NOrmally, I cocktails would be served, perhaps with a started of some kind, then the first course, the the second course to all of the diners at the same time, then dessert/coffee or after dinner drink. We all finished the first course (one huge salad for me and entrees for the other three) at the same time, and when I asked the server about my mac and cheese he acted surprised even though he had asked if I wanted "anything else with your salad" and I said yes and he wrote something down on his pad. I cancelled the order, the server apologized, the manager came over and offered his apologies, and then some discoumts were made on the bill.
We came by during Winter break so it was less crowded than usual. Everything about it was a good experience. Food is good. Drinks are good.
This last bit of advice is not criticism but advice: word of note, the tables are sticky, so I recommend before it reopens the owners wash the table tops. I would like to see Beer Baron diversify the beer menu to have more Belgian style winter beer (dark ale) over winter. I notice they have reduced the IPA from 30 types of IPA to 15, which is a big improvement from before.
We sat outside on the patio and it was perfect for a New Year’s Day brunch! Thank you!
Great Beer List
Great Place for families or a nice date night!! My husband and I really enjoyed our date night there. Good food and drinks.
Beer Baron has great hamburgers, a good selection of other fare, great selection of beers, and a good wine list. The outside tables or side room are good for conversation. It s a good casual and inexpensive restaurant.
A very pleasant place to spend a weekend afternoon. They had two outstanding dishes I hadn’t experienced before and I’m not sure why everyone doesn’t have—a Benedict on a latke with house smoked salmon and a mock Benedict poutine (gravy instead of hollandaise). Both were delicious, innovative, and amazing. Throw in a remarkable bar and dog friendliness, and I’m not sure why we don’t go there more often.
The polenta was great. Wife liked the butter chicken, wine list worked out ok. Did not sample whiskey menu, will return for the beer list.
Great Happy Hour!! Food was also great with great service! I will definitely go back.
I always like coming to beer baron! I like the way how they make my margarita! ☺️😉 their staffs are awesome too
The food was very tasty and nicely presented. However, due to the noise level, I'm not sure we will return.
Whiskey selection is quite good tho how they organize their ‘Bible’ of whiskey could be better. Food is average. Will go again for whiskey and for snacks.
Surpassed my expectations. Birthday w 6 people. Excellent food. Great fish and vegetarian dishes. Couldn’t get in to Wood Tavern but this was just as good! Low corkage. Whiskey cocktail was too sweet. Churro style waffle dessert was fab. We will be back with many more friends. Easy to hear. Liked the corner booth.
Good neighborhood place. Lots of bourbon and beers to choose from.
We had a fabulous experience. Our server was great, she was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I ordered a dish that didn’t taste quite right to me, which I didn’t send back but I didn’t eat it either. Our server noticed and apologized and asked repeatedly if she could get me something else. I declined since I had eaten all of my boyfriends fries (which were the best fries I have ever had!!). When we were all done the manager came out and apologized for my meal and said he tasted it and it was off for some reason and they were fixing it. He comped our WHOLE meal. I was completely shocked. I am extremely impressed by how they handled the situation, accidents do happen by the way you handle them is what really matters. I highly recommend them and will definitely be back myself!
Went here for a girls lunch with two moms and their young daughters. Had a lovely time. Champagne and Shirley Temples were on point. Shared a bunch of small plates, which were great. Nothing to rave about but nothing to complain about either. A very fun, casual, and good spot to hang out and enjoy a couple of hours. Would come back.
So glad we found this location. Not too busy when we arrived at noon on a Saturday but quickly got busy. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food and drink. Staff was attentive and friendly. Will go back for sure !
This place has a great outdoor space, dog-friendly, with a mix of sun and shade, and some tasty menu items. They've got a great beer and wine list, great accessibility to BART, so there are lots of things to recommend this as a hot spot. Where they can improve is on consistency. Dining here a week ago, the hummus plate with crudite was absolutely delicious. Ordering it on this visit only a week later, the preparation was completely different - the hummus was dry and formed like a patty, a single radish was cut lengthwise into two giant pieces, instead of being sliced, and the asparagus was cooked to the point of being floppy -- pretty hard to dip into anything! We will be back, but hope they will work on these issues. It's disappointing to come back for another serving of a great meal, only to find that it's completely different.
Great beer selection. Very welcoming for families with kids. Spacious with nice outdoor patio space.
I've enjoyed several meals with friends at Beer Baron over the last couple of years. This time I asked my guests what they thought and their personal reviews were mixed. Of the 3 other guests, 2 thought the food was average and everyone felt the menu was pretty limited for brunch. Our server was wonderful. The outdoor seating does not have sufficient umbrella coverage so we were pretty boiling at a table with no umbrella. The bloody mary's were excellent.
Had a blast yesterday! Thank you again OpenTable 😌🙏🏽
We were here for lunch service on a Saturday.
The food was good, but it took a really long time to arrive. The service was abysmal. Don't be in a rush when you dine here.
We ordered appetizers and our main courses, and there was no sign of any food an hour later. We inquired with the server, and shortly thereafter, she said she punched in our appetizers. Uhh, what? Finally, our main courses arrived, and five minutes after that, our appetizers showed up. We sure could have used the appetizers during that hour-long wait.
Luckily, it was the weekend and we didn't have to rush back to work, so we enjoyed the company of friends while we were waiting. It's also good that nobody had low blood sugar since the food took forever to arrive.
Apparently the server was new, but new guests arrived at tables around us, ate, paid, and left before we received our food. We saw food constantly flying out of the kitchen, but none of it was headed our way. Not sure what's going on with this place, but it feels chaotic and not in a good way.
P.S. We received a burger that we asked for grilled onions on -- and it contained raw onions, too. Double the onion!
Drinks and patio are lovely, but the food is terrible!
A very odd experience at Beer Baron. We stood in the front by the host table waiting to be seated in what seemed like a relatively empty restaurant with plenty of servers. A server did come by and let us know the host would be with us soon. She eventually came and sat us and acted like it was an inconvenience. We then proceeded to wait for probably 15 minutes as people (servers and what seemed like maybe the manager) walked by us numerous times without initiating contact. It was not busy and there was a lot of standing around. We were puzzled , found some humor in this, and eventually got up and went to the bar where we were served relatively quickly. Once initiating contact with the bartender, things improved. Cocktails were good as was food. I would go there again just to see if it was a one time event or regular service .
I've been to the BeerBaron on College several times, always leaving with a smile on my face. This time, however, I was a little less enthusiastic, perhaps because we ate at 8 pm and by then the sidewalks had rolled up and the place seemed lackluster. Although it probably hasn't changed, the menu seemed less compelling. My guest and I both had the beef cheek tacos which were just 3 tortillas with the stewed beef and a little garnish. However, it was listed as an appetizer so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Nothing really stood out on the mains except for the burger which I've had a few times and love. Just wanted something else. Service, as always, was very nice and the bar is a stunner.
This was my second time going, I have too say I was very disappointed in the quality of the food. The first time the quality of food was much better.
I thought our server was the best part of the meal.
Not sure I will come back, unless the quality of the food improves. Also, my daughter ordered the kids Mac and cheese and the portion if it was quite small.
Food was delicious, service was terrible. They accidentally gave our reservation to another party, and were generally slow and inattentive- took forever to get us menus, water, the bill. The bartending staff was great, though.
The service was awful! It took forever & their was both a good & a drink auction! Ridiculous!
