Beauty & Essex- New York
The atmosphere of the space is both grand and intimate, moody and effervescent. Various rooms for lounging and dining unfold on two floors, like a large turn-of-the-century townhouse. Each room has its own unique elements that celebrate timeless jewelry designs and upscale jewelry stores.
The cuisine is multi-ethnic in inspiration, casually elegant, and designed for sharing at the table among friends and family. Where the Stanton Social"s menu is Chef Chris Santos' take on cocktail party classics and street foods from across the globe, Beauty & Essex is rooted in a bold bistro direction focusing on the reinvention of modern family style dining that is both whimsical and sophisticated.

Great ambiance and food
Toilets out of order but with no apology just kept telling people you can’t go downstairs. Reception staff not welcoming at all & the manger just walked around constantly on his phone, no interest in the customers. Max our waiter was amazing!
The food was good but the service was the worst I’ve had in a long time. I almost requested to speak with a manager but I could see the manager walking around so he clearly saw that we weren’t greeted. It took the server 15 minutes to even greet our table. We celebrated my boyfriends birthday and honestly this almost ruined the night and I really wanted the night to be special. I most likely won't be back. I don’t mind spending any dollar amount on food but the service must be up to par.
Food was amazing and if you were not ordering drinks, was quite reasonable. I really lovely night
Fantastic, food is unbelievable and great atmosphere.
Sit at the bar and ask for Shane! He was the best! The food is amazing. Beauty and Essex is a New York staple.
It was a really fun atmosphere! We did get up charged for two dishes because we were sharing but we weren’t told of the charge until we got the bill. Would’ve been really nice to know.
i was so excited to go here for my birthday dinner, and the second i walked in the service did not meet my expectations. i have been to other tao group restaurants that have blown my socks off but i found that it seems that my group (3 people) were bothering the hostess. when she brought us to the table, it actually was not ready and she shoved us in the corner until it was. our waiter looked like she didnt care to be there, barely speaking to us and just coming to collect our orders. considering the money we spent and the time spent i expected a lot more from there. it was a huge let down as the decor is amazing and it looks like it has so much potential.
Over priced, crowded, pretentious and the ataff was ruse. Never again.
It was a fun super yummy evening. Was a bit too dark in the eating area
Had to wait 20 minutes for the table we reserved weeks prior. I understand it was really busy that night. The food wasn't bad, hoping for a better experience next time.
This place was amazing! The atmosphere in combination with the food was just exceptional. I will say, the bathroom attendant made the restroom feel a little cramp just due to the size. I could definitely do without a guy there talking on the phone while I used the restroom. Just a small detail that is overshadowed by the great drinks and food. I would definitely come back
We walked in and we’re sat immediately. The dining room is stunning. It’s dark and intimate but just close enough together to meet the table beside you! It took a little long for our server to greet us. And when she got there she seemed rushed and a little flustered. I think she was new. My fiancé loved her cocktail and mine was pretty good too. Our water glasses never ran low which is always a good sign. We split the beef carpaccio, roasted bone marrow, and the burger. The slaw with the carpaccio was delicious. It added a nice crunch with just enough salt and seasonings In the dressing. The bone marrow was an awesome looking plate with three large halved bones. The banquettes were perfectly grilled and had some crunch followed by a nice chew. Our burger unfortunately was the part that is keeping this from a 5 star. We ordered our burger medium rare but it came out raw. We didn’t bother to say anything since we just ate beef carpaccio. But on top of it being raw, it just didn’t have much flavor. It’s too bad because everything else was perfect. I am making a trip to LA in April so I am going to try that location next time.
Overall I wasn't impressed. The ambiance lived up to the hype, however the food was sub par. The food was just regular and I don't think was worth the price; it lacked flavor. The waiter recommended that we ordered 4 to 6 appetizers and I wish I went with my gut and ordered a full meal. By the end of the night my boyfriend and I were still hungry and ended up going to the local McDonalds.
The waiter was nice and the drinks were good, but I don't see myself coming back here again.
We had a reservation for 8 people, they wanted to squeeze us into a table for six. Eventually they created a larger table for us by putting a tabletop over 2 smaller tables which worked well, except it wasn’t clean. First we had a waiter who we were told he was assisting our waitress who we didn’t see till mid meal. The food was okay, very small portions and nothing to rave about. We ordered many appetizers and then a second round of appetizers before our entree’s because they were so small. We did enjoy the ambience and the music that was played was enjoyable. It was a nice evening but for the cost of $1000 for dinner and drinks, I wouldn’t suggest it.
Our friends passed along the recommendation to try B&E and it did not disappoint. We loved the ambience, drinks, and brunch lite fare. Next time we’ll plan on a longer stay!
loud and not what we were expecting
Food and service were great!
The food & service is exceptional, the space and ambiance is chic & hip , I ordinarily don’t really get sticker shocked with a bill and expected this one to be large but $170 with the tip for breakfast is a lot for the average person . My fiancé and myself both enjoyed it but doubt we will ever go back .
If your looking for a brunch party, be sure to make the reservation for the "Champagne Brunch" which is held in the upstairs portion of Beauty & Essex. I had no idea when I made reservations for brunch and was slightly disappointed when we were not part of the "party". Don't get me wrong, the downstairs space was exquisite, the service was great and the food was terrific but the music was like an iPod on shuffle and the drinks are a bit over priced. After eating, to my surprise, the upstairs was open to the public (meaning the regular brunch guests) The party was loud and colorful, including glow sticks, light up rings and belly dancers. A bit over crowded but hey, its Sunday brunch in NY. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone, from "just drinks, a date, brunch with friends, or dinner with the parents" the space will definitely surprise you!
The food was good, the service was awful. Our waitress acted like she was doing us a favor.
We went for brunch and truly enjoyed everything we had.
Loved Every moment
This is my second time visiting this restaurant for my birthday dinner and it never fails to disappoint! It is a beautiful venue with delicious food and wonderful service.
I cannot say enough about the kindness, care, and gracious attention the nature’s and staff of Beauty & Essex showed me and my wife on Saturday night. I hope to return soon to enjoy a truly special evening with my wife.
Food is shockingly not good. It did not taste like food expected at a fairly highly recommended NYC restaurant
Really fun and great experience. Not too loud, great vibey dim lighting but spent $120 and left feeling hungry :/
I took my daughter for a Valentine dinner because she’s never been there. The spaghetti had a little too much lemon so I left half of it. The margaritas were not great but it was ok. Overall, we had a great time! Wish the photo-booth would have sent us our pictures since we took them and entered our email address. Would have been a good addition to the experience.
Amazing food and the service was great! A little tight space wise but I know that’s standard in NYC. Loved the decor. Light fixtures on point! Def will recommend.
I’ve been to Beauty & Essex a few times and it is always great! I had the Kale & Apple Salad for the first time which was amazing. Along with the Chile Relleno empanadas & Grilled Cheese dumplings which I’ve liked from prior visits. We had the salmon and lobster ravioli (Valentine’s Day menu item) as our entrees. I liked the salmon but wasn’t a fan of the ravioli. For dessert, the donuts which were amazing, especially with the raspberry sauce. I will return in the future.
The service was so slow and awful. I had a reservation for brunch & was seated immediately. Once seated we waited 20min to get waters. We ordered drinks & food all at once since we had so much time to decide. My friend has a cheese allergy and the waitress never followed up confirmation the meat was not make with cheese. We found out from the guy when he delivered the food. When we ordered a 2nd round of drinks one of them never made it out. When we finally got the check I told the waitress we were now in a rush to make an appointment. It took the waitress 15 minutes to give us our change. We ended up following her up to the bar and proceeded to watch her flirt with the bartender for an extra 5 min before we even got the change. The restaurant was busy when we got there at 2:15 but by the time we left at 4:30 there was only 3 tables still there.
Service was slow.
Beautiful, fun atmosphere! It was great for a group of friends, would also be great to celebrate a special occasion with a loved one. We had a group of 8 and ordered almost everything on the menu, it was all fantastic! The reason for the 4 stars is for portion size. It is a tapas style menu, and some items came smaller than expected. (Like the avacado toast, but was very good!) We would for sure visit again! Definitely try the grilled cheese, bacon, and tomato soup dumplings!
I understand that Valentine’s Day always brings out sides of a restaurant in service and clientele that may not be there normally. However, we were very disappointed coming here for the first time on Valentine’s Day. We had a midnight reservation and called 1.5 hours in advance to ask if any tables were open earlier. We were told the place was booked. No problem, we waited. Got there at midnight and half the restaurant was already empty, so not entirely sure what was booked. By the time we finished our appetizers they were dragging tables around to set up for the next day. They turned on the lights and stopped the music to clean up because almost everyone was gone at this point. Our server, who was the only competent part of the service, realized how awkward we felt and turned the lights low and the music on again. We figured now that the restaurant was empty and they were clearly ready for us to be gone, the entrees would come quickly. But they didn’t, they took forever. Honestly I’m not sure if they started shutting down the kitchen and suddenly realized another order was waiting. We ate a little of the entrees, got them boxed and left without dessert. If you can’t handle midnight reservations, don’t make them. We would have happily come earlier and gotten out of the way. The food itself was passably enjoyable, nothing memorable but nothing horrible. When leaving, we tried to wait for a turn to take a photo on their main staircase since the setting is half the appeal, but one of their guards (?) stood above my husband on the steps so close and awkwardly trying to get him to keep walking that we decided to skip it. And don’t ask if they’ll take a photo of the both of you... they’re not allowed. So many other places have the substance to backup the surface appearance, so we won’t be back.
Order the dumplings
Fantastic.. the food was almost as good as the vibe.. we were a few minutes late due to Uber and the staff was still totally accommodating.. it was Valentine’s Day and the place was packed so I really appreciate the understanding.. will DEF be back next time we are in nyc.
Amazing food, good vibes, perfect for date night or a night with the girls!
Fantastic experience overall. Only disappointing thing was the photo booth - took such wonderful pictures but were never emailed to me. When I called the restaurant they said many people experienced this but there’s nothing they could do. Wished someone would’ve warned me as I was taking them - I would’ve relied on something else to capture our Valentine’s Day.
The food was amazing and awesome service
