From building society, to bank, to BEAR – this ornate old banking hall site on Derby’s Iron Gate stood empty and forgotten for 9 long years… until we came along.

BEAR Iron Gate, Derby sits slap-bang in the centre of the city’s iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter; the original hotspot for high-quality food and drink. Opening in 2017 following the success of our Uttoxeter store, the progression to Derby seemed natural for BEAR, as our two founders spent a lot of time in the city as teens, so they have loads of fun memories attached to the place.

We booked a table ,our normal one but when we arrived another customer was sitting there. I told one of the staff and he said just sit at any table was isn’t reserved. I told him we had reserved a table What’s the point in booking a table when no notice is taken. Coffee still the best in Derby though

We were a table of four who came for lunch but not sure we would return as found the service poor. We finished eating & were left with a table full of empty plates for probably over an hour until we ordered coffee & more drinks. The table had to be cleared to allow for those so why wasn’t it cleared earlier.

Great food and coffee . Just find decor in Irongate a little dark and insufficient cosy chairs like the Derbion one !!

Great service, they gently accommodated us when noticing that we came with a dog. Food is as good as before (last visited 6 years ago) while the menu has been revamped to accommodate modern taste. Will definitely come back!
