From building society, to bank, to BEAR – this ornate old banking hall site on Derby’s Iron Gate stood empty and forgotten for 9 long years… until we came along.

BEAR Iron Gate, Derby sits slap-bang in the centre of the city’s iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter; the original hotspot for high-quality food and drink. Opening in 2017 following the success of our Uttoxeter store, the progression to Derby seemed natural for BEAR, as our two founders spent a lot of time in the city as teens, so they have loads of fun memories attached to the place.

    Popped in for father's day, arrived a little earlier than originally booked but were accommodated with no fuss, great service from front of house. Fully recommend. Looking forward to coming back

    Our 1st time visiting Bear. I had the Shaksusha and my partner the house all day breakfast which was really tasty. However, we did not enjoy the diet cokes we asked for which were very cheap awful alterntives and I was not informed of this when ordering at the till. We also had the Queen Vic cakes which were not covered up so were on the dry side, and the filter coffee for 2 was poor and kinimal for what we paid. Overall the food was good but cakes and drinks were poor so I wont be coming back im afraid.

    We booked a table ,our normal one but when we arrived another customer was sitting there. I told one of the staff and he said just sit at any table was isn’t reserved. I told him we had reserved a table What’s the point in booking a table when no notice is taken. Coffee still the best in Derby though

    We were a table of four who came for lunch but not sure we would return as found the service poor. We finished eating & were left with a table full of empty plates for probably over an hour until we ordered coffee & more drinks. The table had to be cleared to allow for those so why wasn’t it cleared earlier.
