Located on the first floor of Derby’s vibrant and buzzing Derbion shopping centre, this BEAR store has bloomed off the back of the incredible success of our gorgeous spot over in the city’s Cathedral Quarter.

We wanted to bring some of that familiar High Street character to the centre, and we’ve done that by sectioning the vast area in to smaller, cosier sections and added comfy seating, as well as softening our usual warm colour palate slightly to compliment the light, airy atmosphere of the mall.

BEAR Derbion is a snug little haven that you can use to escape all that retail hustle.

We arrived at 11.25am Having booked a table at 11.30am for my daughter’s 26th Birthday as she has enjoyed coming here in the past. No table was ready for us almost an after thought with our reservation. Staff had to ask customers to move to accompany us which left us feeling uneasy. All this whilst other staff are welcoming guests with a help yourself. Find a seat or table anywhere attitude. The staff member did say a half hearted sorry for the delay, but no other mention of anything. I did not mention this at the time as my daughter suffers with anxiety so did not want to spoil her day. This experience and service has fallen well below what I have experienced from Bear in the past. I will think twice next time about any sort of booking.especially as this was a birthday celebration.

I normally give Bear 5 stars but unfortunately on this occasion I’ve knocked a couple of stars off as the food that I ordered wasn’t available. I wanted the fruit pancakes and we’d gone in specifically to have pancakes so it was annoying that they weren’t available. The only ones available were chicken and bacon, so no good for me being a vegetarian.

Really enjoyed our time at Bear this afternoon. The staff were wonderfully helpful and decorated a table for our friends baby bump get together! The food and drinks arrived really quickly and were all really tasty!

The coffees we ordered were cold and needed to be replaced. The poached eggs with the smashed avocado were cold and not runny. The bacon was cold. The take next to me sent hers back as the toast wasn't toasted. Don't get me wrong, the food tasted lovely. However, for the value paid, I expected hot coffee and food. Perhaps the kitchen cannot cope with the volume of people on a Saturday.

We're were ignored at the greeting area for at least 8 minutes, so we walked to the coffee bar, where we were told to 'wait a minute' while the girl behind the coffee bar studied an iPad. She didn't look up again, didn't greet us other than to tell us to wait, and did not acknowledge me at all when I told her 'we'll leave it, thanks'. I have never been totally ignored in a restaurant before, and I would have thought that in a city with so much competition it is a risky strategy. Any way, we went instead to The Exeter Arms, where the greeting was warm and friendly, the service was attentive, and the food was awesome. I was more than happy to hand over my 50 quid for two beers, two g&t's, and two delicious lunches. Top tip - give Bear a miss and try the Exeter.
