This place used to be Mahalo, which I like much much more than this new take-over. This “beach” theme just felt generic and lazy. Nothing to write home about. Honestly would not go again or suggest this to anyone. If you do end up there, the pina colada’s aren’t bad but I’ve certainly had better.

This restaurant is amazing however, I just wish they gave you more food. Myself and all of my friends were still hungry after ordering a full meal. Also they do allow you to substitute or add on anything.

I was there with friends for the 4th of July. The food and drinks were decent if perhaps a bit overpriced. I got the island bowl with smashed avocado, which was just rice, beans, greens, plantains, salsa, and guacamole. It was good, but probably not worth the $12. The 5 of us shared a pitcher of the berry mojito, which was light and refreshing. The ambience was great- very island feel. However, we were seated on the rooftop and it was quite hot and sunny. The service was a little slow, but they admitted to being short-staffed for the holiday.

Stopped here for brunch. I guess this restaurant used to be Mahalo. I was pretty disappointed that the menu in the restaurant did not match the one that had been posted online. Having just relocated from Hawaii I was expecting some Ono Grindz, but most of the traditional Hawaiian and Hawaiian-fusion foods were missing from the brunch menu. I don’t think the Hawaiian decor really fits the menu... why there are Kona Surfboards and no Kona beers on the menu is beyond me. I think it would be good for them to maybe go in a more SOCAL direction with the decor since that better matches the current menu. The frosé was tasty, and the food was pretty alright. The Rooftop was cute, but really needs some outdoor fans or misters for the summer time.

When we arrived for our reservation we were greeted by an extremely rude hostess. Fortunately our waitress was the exact opposite, and made the evening quite enjoyable. Service is great, drinks were tasty and the food was amazing. Definitely plan on going back.

Mahalo (now The Beach Social) was great. The food was delicious and the interior was SO cute. My only qualm is that between making my reservation and actually going to brunch there, they rebranded and changed their menu. They didn't have a new brunch menu yet when I went. I likely still would have gone if I'd known about the change, but it would be nice to have gotten the heads up before trying to find the restaurant.

My first time at Mahalo wasn't bad, but the food was nothing to write home about. My 2nd time at Mahalo was definitely worse. For starters, they don't use air conditioning. I made the mistake of going on a hot, humid day, and their ceiling fans and open windows did nothing to remedy the utter discomfort of breathing in steamy air while your body sticks to the table and chairs. All we could think about was how to hurry up and get out of there so we could go eat ice cream at Jeni's next door just to cool off. Their rationale is they're trying to give you an island experience, but it doesn't make sense for business because who wants to eat a big meal while sitting in a sauna??? Also, it's extremely unappealing to see the chefs and wait staff constantly wiping sweat off their faces. They just rebranded themselves under a new restaurant called Beach House Social, so hopefully the new place is more prepared to handle the plentiful hot weather of a Chicago summer. Now, let's talk about the food. The veggie poke is unlike any veggie poke I've ever had, and that's not a good thing. I didn't taste a single traditional poke flavor. It was basically some bland vegetables drizzled with a tangy red sauce, and a side of bug. Yes, that's right - there was a dead bug stuck to my dish. It wasn't a live bug that flew in through the open windows because it was very much dead and stuck to my plate. (Thankfully, they didn't end up charging me for this dish.) My cousin ordered a seafood omelette, which contained a shrimp shell, and my other cousin ordered fish poke, which contained a bone.

This was my second time at Mahalo, and honestly, it was just OK. The food was fine, but nothing we ate really blew us away. While the poke bowls were fresh, they lacked flavor. The cocktails were imaginative, but all very sweet. All-in-all, there wasn't anything I would explicitly complain about, but I would definitely recommend other restaurants for the price.

The service was terrible. Got there early, took a seat at bar and we were ignored for 15 minutes. Finally had bartender. One over only to find out the first three beers I. Hose from their daily menu were not available. This is the old Bom Bolla location. How did that great place not make it and this place does?!

Love Mahalo. Was sad to hear that the concept will be changing to a more "island" cuisine and less Hawaiian. Happy that the Poke Bowls are staying. It's a fun, tasty, and more importantly DIFFERENT restaurant than anything else in Chicago.

First cup of coffee wasn’t even hot. Tuna poke was average. I needed to ask for soy sauce and I never add salt or additional seasoning when I eat out!! Portuguese Hash was pretty disappointing and under seasoned. Service was great. The menu looked good but maybe we came on an off day. Really want to give it another chance.

I went to Mahalo yesterday and the food was decent...loved the nachos and banana pudding. The salmon poke was meh...there was something missing but ok enough that I wanted to come back today to try the traditional poke today. My daughter and I went there today and after we were sat down we were told “let me tell you what’s not available on the menu” and it was essentially 2/3 of it...all the seafood options. Essentially everything we went for. Apparently they are completely changing the menu tomorrow - and none of the wait staff even know what the new menu will be. It will be a new “concept”. You would think they would want to hype it up so people would be excited to come for the “new” menu. Back to the review. We thought let’s still stay and try the Kahlua pork rice, chicken wings and a burger. Fairly basic stuff. All of it was so bland. Literally I don’t think there was salt anywhere and I don’t like salty food. My rice was edible enough but not enjoyable. My daughter didn’t even touch her burger because the bun was covered with grease on top. The wings tasted boiled (I don’t think they were but had that no flavor) and the sauce they came in tasted bottled. I’m giving two stars because the waiter was nice, understanding of our disappointment and professional.

The interior is well decorated and we got to be seated in the back with the neon "Mahalo Vibes" sign. Great if you are into posting your outings to social media. Service was fine but not particularly attentive. Our small group of friends tried the coconut shrimp, fries, two types of ramen and a salmon poke bowl. Generous portion of fries but they tasted like McDonald's (not necessarily a bad thing). It seemed like this place made things "Hawaiian" by making their food VERY sweet - too sweet to finish. Would recommend trying once to anyone interested but am not compelled to return.

We went for a late dinner and sat in the back dining room, which was in considerable disarray following a large party (reportedly). Our server was good, and prompt enough. Neither of us liked our drinks (the Hawaiian sangria was way too tart, and the blood orange margarita tasted like some sort of solvent with red pepper on the rim instead of salt). We had the wings for an appetizer, the tuna Poke bowl and the big burger, all of which were fine. The seasoning on the Japanese-style fries looked *very* unappetizing--I won't elaborate. The place a buzzy, noisy, surfs-up sort of spot, but not very authentic, altogether. It was okay, but we won't go back.
