As usual, amazing! Our favorite sommelier was back and service and food both outstanding. We bought 4 gift certificates so we can share this jewel with others!
We sat at the counter, and so cool to see the staff making the food right in front of us. Love the decor with the beautiful green plants hanging from the ceiling. Had the lamb, prawns, oyster mushrooms, roasted cauliflower and baba ganoush which were all excellent! Will definitely go back again!
Lived up to expectations and then some. Will be back soon!
Service was bad - host was rude about us asking to be seated in an area with heater due to the cold temperature. We were rarely checked on by our server. Music was like club music (house and rap music) was so loud we couldn't hear each other speak. Food was decent, very small portions for the price.
we ordered 6 dishes for 3 people. 3 were fantastic (hummus, grilled dorade and oyster mushrooms). 1 good (lamb neck) 1 was eh (malawach) and 1 was ok (okra) . we ordered 2 bottles of wine. 1 was nice and the other was eh. the wine guy took it back and replaced it w/ a better bottle.
Best seated under the creepers.. The bread and fried pita are some of the best in LA. My favorite has to be Grilled prawn and Cauliflower with sides that have petals. Both lamb and beef tangine melt in your mouth.. and to round it off the BonBon is great!
Fantastic as always
Lamb shawarma was bomb
So was the duck fat hummus
I'd skip the prawns next time
Service was very attentive
Played good music
We had an incredible dining experience. We want Trent to be our server EVERY Time. He's awesome! Cannot wait to get back again.
Outstanding menu, very unique. Everything was prepared to perfection. Delicious cocktails.
Parking: valet $10 or street parking (relatively easy)!
Service: outstanding and friendly staff; always made sure to check in with us
After looking at many reviews, we went for the hummus, grilled prawns, oyster mushroom kebab, aged half duck, and the sorbet. What I loved about the hummus dish was that they served it two ways - puréed and chunky (left full garbanzo beans in it) as well as it being served with the warm fluffy pita bread. The grilled prawns had an amazing spicy kick to it and the taste was different than other grilled prawns I've eaten before. It came with a "cooling" sauce, which my boyfriend didn't particularly like with the prawns, but the prawns themselves were delicious! The oyster mushroom kebab had a smoky unique flavor to it - I'd highly recommend it, especially if you love mushrooms! I haven't eaten duck in years, but the aged half duck here was served in two ways - breast and confit leg along with a bone broth. The duck was aged for 7 days and had a soft juicy texture to it. I definitely recommend this entrée to share! We were going to try the lamb neck, but was told it can be a bit gamey, so we opted for the duck instead. We do not regret our decisions and will definitely come back!
Drinks: we had the option to sample two white wines, when we were trying to decide which to order. Both were delicious and complemented the food well!
Foodie heaven! Get the oyster mushroom kabob and the lamb shawarma! Loved my Miriam drink!
Spectacular. The food is as sensational and tasty as one can find dining out. Simple flavors, but nuanced, produced to perfection.
This place was exceptional! It was everything I expected and more!
Excellent from beginning to end! The food was amazing and the service was superb!
I’m already thinking about when I can go here again! The food was truly excellent. We had the duck nduja hummus, grilled octopus, beef cheek tagine, and lamb neck shawarma. This was more than enough food for the two of us but we muscled through because it was that good.
I must say, this place gets LOUD. To the point where it’s near impossible to hear your dining companions. It doesn't help that the music is cranked up with the bass on.
Had an absolutely phenominal culinary experience at Bavel last night! Everything was perfection! The service, the vibe, the music, the decor and last but not least the exceptional food! I'm completely blown away and totally elated that my mother cuisine is being showcased in this fabulous food marvel called Bavel! We started with the duck hummus - the best hummus i have ever had to date, then onto the fried quail that surprises you with the most glorious spices and sauce, then the most succulent and flavorful prawns and yogurt/cucumber sauce, and then ending savory with 3 different preperations of duck! Oh my! The bone broth was everything, and the duck breast on the sword skewer was so tender and perfectly cooked, the crunchy skin of the duck confit was mouth watering. I rarely enjoy desserts at restaurants but I'm so glad we ended on that note. The strawberry sumac sweet cheese pastry was a delight! Perfectly paired with pistachio ice cream! Go there immediately...you can't because there's that thing called reservations-and they need to be made far far in advance, but go...and you won't be disappointed.
One of our last dishes came out extremely late. The waiter said the order was on its way but it sounded like the kitchen forgot about the order. We ended up taking the order to go since we had to wait 30+ min for it to come out.
Loved everything about the experience. Fav DTLA restaurant and can’t wait to return.
Portion are small
Overcharging for tap water
Over charge for side dish and pitas bread
Truly amazing. One of the best dinning experiences.
Pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was! it’s a family style restaurant and the appetizer portions are pretty small, so you can try more dishes! loved the scallop crudo, ended up ordering 3 portions for our party of 5!
Would pass up on the fried quail though.
The food was absolutely excellent, as was the service. Scallop crudo, duck nduja hummus, mushroom and lamb neck shawarma - all outstanding. Now onto the noise which is why this review is 4 stars and not 5. When making the reservation my only choice was counter seating so I went with it. The counter is in the incredibly loud main room facing one of the cook stations. Within a minute of getting seated we realized we could barely hear ourselves speak and even worse were the cooks in front of us intermittently shouting orders. I realize that’s the nature of the beast with having to cook and communicate with other cooks in such a cavernous noisy space but it wasn’t for us. We asked to be moved and the staff accommodated us.
Had an amazing experience!
Want to book again!
Food was unremarkable, but everything else was beautiful.
Bavel is excellent. I go as often as I can get a reservation, which can be the toughest part. The only drawback to be aware of is the noise level can be very high.
But food is wonderful - I am a particular fan of the hummus with duck nduja. Outstanding. My favorite dish in the city right now. The oyster mushrooms and the lamb neck shwarma are also epic.
Service is polished and friendly without being overly solicitous.
If you are considering going, go. Though I do think the experience is best with 3 or more people so you can enjoy more dishes as they are meant to be shared.
Everything is amazing here. Do not hesitate!
Pre Mother’s Day
Fantastic food in an earthy unique setting
I am from the middle east and there this restaurant would be just moderate or less ....i don't see what the buzz is around this place ... They didn't have half the items on menu ,basically no entree's at all which is extremely disappointing and unprofessional... we were a party of 6 we shared appetizers all night... cocktails were good and the oyster mushroom dish was the best of the night but that's about it... will not come back...
The best place in Los Angeles for Mediterranean cuisine, hands down.
Delicious cuisine and great service. My friend and I enjoyed our experience.
Best dining experience in awhile. Must go with a good sized group to experience all the good food.
Food was incredible, service terrific. Innovative cocktails, great wine list. Lots of happy customers having a great time. What is not to like?
Excellent service. Interesting food! Will go back!
Great spot, a few annoyances. Pros: lamb shawarma, hummus, dorado, service, cocktails and bon bon. Cons: the male host with glasses, marinated octopus (cold & oily and I think it was missing an ingredient), and the fact they impose a 4% additional fee to cover cost of their staff when it’s a $$$$ restaurant. Tacky! Not to mention they did nothing for my birthday.
The food was exceptional. We had the duck hummus, grilled prawns, lamb shawarma, and rose donuts. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. It was well worth the 2 month wait for a reservation!
The food is phenomenal!
This is definitely one of my faves. Jessie was so great! Love the place and atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
