I wanted so badly to like Bauer more than I did. We went based on the Cincinnati magazine best of article, this resturant placed ahead of some our favorite places. In order to reccomend a resturant it needs to have excellent food, ambiance and service. They missed the mark immediately, the entrance was odd and disconnected from the resturant. From a decor standpoint there were some nice feautures but it lacked beauty, which took away from our experience. We ordered 3 dishes, Ratatouille (Not worth the price), gnocchi (amazing and very well crafted) and a burger (tasted good, cooked to perfection). Each dish was paced way to slowly, 20 plus minutes between each, we we're ready to go by the time the last arrived. To say yes to dessert felt like we might be there until close. Our server was knowledgeable. This is just a side note and maybe personal preference, they did not have an open kitchen, which I believe is a mark of a good restaurant. To smell all the food cooking and see the chefs working creates anticipation for my meal.

Wonderful meal and great service. It is a nice restaurant downtown so you will drop a bit of cash but I thought it was more than reasonable for the quality and quantity that we got. If I lived in cinci I would be a regular.

The food was absolutely outstanding! The chef board had so many delicious, unique flavors. It alone is worth a visit. Very memorable meal. Our entire party of four was very impressed. It was one of the best meals I have ever had.

The food was great - dumpling soup, sauerbraten, pieroges, ratatouille were all really good. Uniques takes on drinks, some hard to find German beers, finish the meal with an underberg it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while.

After hearing so much about this restaurant,
My wife and I were very excited to try. Came back a little underwhelmed and disappointed as it didn’t really live up to the hype. If Bauer is this year’s #2 in the city (according to Cincinnati Magazine for 2019) then all the restaurants in the city have a long way to go to even be in the same breath as Sotto on food, service, and overall experience.

Menu items overly complex for farm-to-table profile, using mix of local and exotic components. Basement locale is dour. Decor is bizarre, with old "farm stuff" plus 78 rpm records on tables with empty "vintage" salt/pepper sets. Servers wear drab, heavy workers' aprons that look dirty. Stairs are substantial, no elevator. An impressive list of European beers.

This restaurant is a little off the beaten path, but worth the walk! It’s a wonderful spin on some classic German dishes with many great ideas and flavors. The chicken schnitzel and sauerbraten were absolutely mouthwatering! I will say, the pickled vegetables are outstanding as well, and the mushroom soup will blow you away.....especially if you don’t like mushrooms!

Sauerbraten may have been one of the best things I've eaten all year. Everything was just done so well from the unique twist on classic cocktails to the mind-blowing dinner. It's been days and I'm still thinking about it.

A gem downtown for sure! The look, ambiance, and service were excellent. Our server explained dishes in detail to help with our selection. The presentation was gorgeous! One of the best in Cincinnati. We will be back and can’t wait to tell our friends!

Mushroom soup outstanding with so many levels of flavor. Wurst accompanied by excellent mustard. Pork Chop and Gnocchi entrees were delightful - as was black forest cake (to go). So happy to have found this restaurant with delightful food and good service during our visit to Cincinnati. And, appreciated that it was quiet enough for us to converse while dining. Thanks to the farmers, chef, staff, and decorators!

The only disappointment was they were out of the Malbec we ordered, so we had to spend a bit more on our second choice. Their menu is very agreeable, and their execution is even better. Lots of good flavor and nicely presented. Highly recommend.

All the food was delicious. The Pork Chop was definitely one of the best I’ve ever had.. Ambiance is a little confusing as if their identity isn’t crystal clear and the music was way too quiet in the dining room, adding to an awkward feel. But the food transcends any negatives. Delicious, unusual and lots of flavor! Our service was very knowledgable about the menu etc. Why did our credit card charge come through as Jimmy B’s though?? (Former occupant of this space, but a completely different restaurant, I believe?)

It is in a neat location in the lower level of the building next to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The decor is very interesting, sort of barn like, but light colored wood so it’s not dreary down there. We were seated by the swinging kitchen door which had a window in it so the wait staff could see each other. They must have had an incident with going through the door because each time someone went through the door, they physically knocked on it. That got to be annoying for us.
The food was good. Nice assortment of beers. The cheese platter was tasty not too much as to fill a person up before the main entree. We chose the pork chop which seemed chewy. The sauce on top was flavorful, there was a sparse topping of grilled Brussels sprouts as the vegetable. No potato.
We ordered the Black Forest dessert which was in a very creative presentation. It was very rich, and delicious. We spent $150. It was a good meal. If you didn’t want to patronize the three steak houses that were in the same general downtown area, this restaurant would be a nice change of pace.

That was the worst meal of my life in a room with no ambiance whatsoever. Save your money and go somewhere where they believe in seasoning food. Their cauliflower was smothered in sauerkraut and cinnamon. The food is inedible. Left and went out to get dinner elsewhere.

Dinner was absolutely wonderful. Highly recommend. I chose this place because it had wonderful reviews and I liked the farm to table/ local food concept fused with German/ Eastern European cooking. My husband and I shared the duck breast and the sauerbraten brisket. The duck was my favorite and the cabbage served with it was amazing. Never thought I’d use the words “amazing” and “cabbage” together. The charcuterie made us try several very new to us things and we liked them. The apple cake and honey tangerine tart were delicious. Service was fabulous. The atmosphere is cool too! Urban farm house. Each table had unique antique salt and pepper shakers. It was a fun place! Definitely will be back. Thanks for a great evening out.

The meal was unique and somewhat rich, though very good. Drinks and service outstanding. My only complaint was how hot it was, due to overhead lighting and lack of airflow.

The air-conditioning was not working. Yet no consideration was offered nor were we told that before we were seated. It was hot as hell in the place and no one seemed to care. We ordered small plates only and left ASAP

Nice place for dining with creative food and drink menus. It is not a tacky German restaurant. They invent and reinvent. The chef’s board is a crowd pleaser.
Waiters may be a little bit overzealous (don’t pick up the plates before we finish everything!) and bureaucratic (for scooping the delicious sauerbraten brisket sauce with an extra slice of bread, you would be charged), but, all in all, a great food experience.

This was a very unique dining experience. We loved the atmosphere, our server (Jeff) did an excellent job describing the menu to us and the food was absolutely delicious! We will definitely be back.

Beyond Outstanding. Not sure if my Noise Level rating is accurate. Very quiet dinner. We are always searching for a quiet place with great food and service. Found it!
