Three Cheese Beef & Pork "Meatballs"
Toasted Garlic Tomato Sauce, Parmesan
Parmesan-Herb Crusted Lamb Chops
Roasted Garlic and White Wine-Cream Sauce
First visit to Battalion for an end of school year, birthday, graduation dinner. Overall we look forward to a return visit. Enjoyed the venue and ambiance. Party of four with good discriminating appetites. Started with meatball, octopus and focaccia appetizers. All were very good and tasty and just wished there was a little more octopus. For the primi, we shared the spinach dumplings, gnocchi and manicotti. All were consumed quickly. Entrees of chicken parm, pork, veal and trout were generous portions with positive reviews by all. Green beans and cauliflower sides were ordered but relatively untouched due to volume of food. Did not stop us from ordering one of each dessert - tiramisu and panna cotta. A great meal for all and kudos to The Battalion staff!
Ordered the Marinated Olives appetizer. It was very good, but spicy. I ordered the Parmesan-Herb Crusted Lamb Chops which were amazing. The crust was nice and crunchy and the presentation was delightful. My friend had the Veal Marsala which she also enjoyed.
Order the Spinach Dumplings for a total mouthgasm.
They were fabulous and pretty much summed up our experience -- delightful, surprising, and thoroughly compelling us to make the trip from Austin to enjoy this food again. We had a hard time deciding on what to order, as it all looked so good. But we were glad for our choices - the dumplings, the trout, the salad with bleu cheese dressing, and the charred green beans.
Service was impeccable. Ambience was lovely.
We'll be back.
Everything about this restraunt is excellent, ambiance, food, service the bar and the hospitality
First time to the Batallion. The location is great, the atmosphere was nice with the darker look and the view to the city were awesome. The food was very good and our waitress was very attentive. One dish that was'nt the greatest was the Chicken Parmesian. It seemed a little dry and we thought it came with pasta.
The service was exceptional. I had not been waited on with white glove service like our server provided since before the pandemic. I came here for a first date and we were both blown away by the level of detail that went into making this night special. i had been before but my date had never been. We was brought fresh plates, water was constantly brought to the table without asking. The food was hot and fresh. We had the marscapone which was absolutely divine. The grilled octopus which sent me into heaven. For our entrees we had the lamb chops and carbonara both were the magnum opus of the evening. For desert we had the panacotta and espresso. I love that when asking about desert we were offered coffee which was the *chefs kiss* of the service for the evening. I was truly SHOOK by the service. If I could give infinite stars I would. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Best gnocchi in town!
Best octopus and rainbow trout. Very unique place
I love this place!
Service distracted (secondi piatti served before primi piatti, cocktails and wine glasses served late). The main plate of my wife (trout) was too salty, even without the crust, and the sauce of mine (veal marsala) was tasty, but the veal meat itself not specially prime. The place and atmosphere is nice. Recomended definitely the "spinach dumplings"!
My first time there (Mother's Day)..I made a reservation thru Open table, but when I arrived the staff mentioned someone else checked in under my name. The manager gracefully still sat us outdoor and made our entrance smoothly despite someone elses foolery & the full capacity. Also, had an issue with the chicken parmesan plate and the waitress quickly helped and assured it was replaced quickly. The manager also stopped by our table to assist and was very kind and accomodating! Red ants were at our feet while dining outdoor, but the waitress kindly moved us to another table. Staff was very attentive and overall I would def go back again bc despite any issues bc they all worked together to assure our dinner was exceptional and at ease. I appreciate all they did for us!
First visit. Food was great. Definitely will be back.
did a date at the bar — everything was amazing. get the meatballs and lamb :)
The food was delicious! Octopus appetizer was perfectly charred and tender with crispiness. Lamb chops were lightly breaded, crispy yet juicy. Charred green beans were excellent. Outdoor dining felt a bit makeshift, but it was nice and breezy, and clean, and made feel comfortable eating at a restaurant for the first time in over a year due to pandemic (all in our party had both vaccine shots more than two weeks prior.). Staff was very careful in adhering to Covid safety measures.
Incredible Meal - the Pork Saltimbocca was amazing
Food was great as usual, but service was unusually slow and inattentive.
Noisy due to openness and concrete. Food very enjoyable but a little heavy wily salted for my taste
Excellent restaurant!! Food and service superb. Highly recommend!!!
Love this place, Josh is an outstanding chef and all the food was delicious.
Great food! Great service! The only issue we had was with sunlight shining through the window, second floor. It be nice if they added a curtain there to block it. Other than that we enjoyed our dinner.
The atmosphere is nice- definitely a nice place for a date.
The food was tasty- my favorite was the meatballs. The plates are meant to be shared, but if you have a good appetite, it might not be enough to fill you up.
The waitress was amazing very competent and attentive.
Price was okay- a little high for the size of the portions.
I would probably go back.
Really great vibe in this old fire station turned restaurant. The food was excellent - especially the lamb chops. We also did the spinach pasta appetizers and they were a great flavor pop. The waiter tried, but he seemed new to waiting tables and was not great. We enjoyed this restaurant very much.
Staff was great and knowledgeable, food was impeccable prepared
The food was fantastic and the service was great. However, the acoustics are bad and the restaurant is very loud!
We were on a long weekend trip to San Antonio and realized we had never visited Battalion for dinner. We had an early reservation since we booked late the same day (Saturday) and were seated immediately. Wait staff was very good. Described dishes very well and helped us make our dinner choices. Food was delicious. Presentations were lovely and flavors were excellent, if different than we expected. We tried the olives and the meatballs (they are not round and are excellent) for starters. We each had a pasta dish for segundi which was not necessary as the portions are quite large for a non-entree dish. Both dishes were quite good. For our entree we decided on the pork saltimbocca. This is a dish that I was quite surprised about since it was a large, thick pork chop instead of the more traditional pounded thin slice of pork, completely wrapped in prosciutto with fresh sage under it. The meat was perfectly cooked and was absolutely delicious. We'll definitely visit Battalion again on another visit to SA.
Outstanding service. By far one of the best customer experiences I've had.
The food is a familiar staple of mom and pop Italian restaurants. I felt the price was exorbitant for the uninspired yet traditional comfort food served. I feel one can find the same quality dishes at other, less pompous environments. It is a beautiful space. Do go if you’re into dining in a beautiful environment and care little about the chef’s creativity.
The spinach dumplings and the lamb chops were phenomenal
Sloan was our server. Was knowledgeable and helpful. Loved the eggplant parmesan; a must have and pleasant surprise to everyone who sampled it. Pork chop was delicious as was the steak.
The service started off fantastic about half way through it went down hill quickly. When spending $125+ for two people we expect a certain level. Waiting for a beer for 15 min and getting told oh I forgot it’s coming 2x it finally arrived as I was almost finished with my meal. Then another waitstaff asked if I could move our things they needed the chair and then after five minutes put the chair back at our table anyway. I was trying to have a date with my wife and I just found it incredibly rude. Then we ordered dessert and asked for coffee. Half way through finishing our dessert we finally got her attention and asked if the coffee was coming and she said oh I haven’t had time to go downstairs...we said never mind now she said “ok” and walked away. We are very generous tippers and not demanding people so it was all just very disappointing. The first 15 min were great......I would just hate to see anyone have anywhere near the same experience as you work hard for your money and want treats like this to be enjoyable.
Food was exceptional and service fantastic. Only gripe is wobbly table.
Delicious food! Lovely evening, fantastic waiter! With two people who have hearing issues and the noise level made it hard to communicate. I will request a quieter table next time.
Excellent on all counts! So good we went back the next night also.
Wonderful atmosphere & service! The food was outstanding. We will certainly be returning.
Last date before brain surgery
Third time here and loved it as per usual. Went here on our first date, then our first anniversary and now just a fancy date night with my lady. Highly HIGHLY recommend the meat balls!
The sun was shining right into my eyes for about 10 mins and I had to wear sunglasses. At 7:00 pm which was strange. The service and food was amazing!!’ Everyone at our table enjoyed themselves and it truly was a wonderful memory we have. We will be back
We enjoyed our evening dining experience at Battalion. The food and drinks were amazing. After we were seated a staff member brought us water and then we had to wait awhile for another staff member to come by to begin taking our order. I noted on the reservations that it was a birthday celebration and unfortunately they did not acknowledge it.
Had not been back to this place in over a year so we were looking forward to the same great experience from the first time. Our table was next to the lower level bar and the restaurant was at about 80% occupancy. The food and service were excellent as expected however the noise level was a bit too high to have a comfortable table conversation. The building is an old fire station with concrete walls and floors so sound is bouncing off everything. This really became annoying as the evening went on and capacity reached close to 100% as we could not even hear the waitstaff when they came around and asked about the food or refills on drinks. What didn't help is the waitstaff is required to wear masked so as appreciative as this was for us having them wear a mask, it made it even harder to hear them because of the room noise level. No fault here, just need to adjust to this. Prefer this to not being able to eat out. Next time I would opt for a table in the patio if the weather is nice.
Worst experience. It was my moms birthday. Made reservation well in advance for outdoors. Texas as Texas does had a cold front. They didn’t have enough heaters for outside reservations so we requested to be seated inside. They said they had no tables even though we offered to wait and there were 7 empty tables on the first floor alone. So I was scrambling on a Saturday night to find another spot for my mothers birthday since she came to visit me. Thank God for La Frite being able to squeeze us in and accommodate. I won’t be going back to battalion for a very very long time. Very poor customer service and they have zero rain plan so don’t book outside unless you’re willing to have to go somewhere else to eat.
