Horrible service. Avoid this place at all costs. It will ruin your evening.
I love this place BUT I wish they could have told us before we made the reservation at 930pm that Kitchen closes at 945pm , Someone should have called me to advised this prior to us arriving to the restaurant.
Drinks are good normally but this was not the case.
Overall we love the restaurant, the ambiance and the food is usually good there. Unfortunately due to a large party booked there that took the whole dining experience south. Food and drink shortages, not sure if it was supply chain issues or just the big party :(.
So be aware when you book ahead of time in these instances and be careful to using open table as we were 1.5 hour ahead our preferences were scrapped after various confirmations.
Still ...Good place still to enjoy dinner in downtown......
Went for my husband’s birthday. The entire indoor space was reserved for a private party, so no live music even though it was a Saturday. We had reserved a patio table so that was not a big deal to us to sit outside. We were seated and then two other tables came after us. Those tables received waters and were greeted by their servers. We waited, and waited, nothing. Flagged another server down after 10 minutes. Asked if we could get some waters and menus. He was apologetic and helpful. Not clear where the breakdown was with table assignments? Supposedly our original server was on break when we were seated. No one mentioned that when we were escorted to the table. Why would you assign a server that is on break to a table? Doesn’t make sense to me. They were out of a number of dishes, but the food we did order was good. I would return again, patio would be lovely in the spring.
What a fun evening! The ambiance, the service and the food were very festive and had us all in a great mood!
I love Batanga but service and food are always a hut and miss. The adobo steak smelled as if the meat was old. I ordered a burger with no bun and medium-rare and got a smashed up burger, with bun, past well done. Food comes out late or we have to remind the server to bring it. I love the ambiance and have great friends working the bar; perhaps it is best to keep Batanga as a drinking place?
My husband and I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a very long time. We were very excited we had a 9 o’clock dinner reservation. We arrived about 25 minutes early and we’re more than happy to wait till our reservation time. The young man politely said that he was more than happy to see us as there was a table available. We reserved a table on the patio as it was a lovely evening and the weather was nice. Upon being walked to our table we noted that numerous outside tables had not been bussed so he sat us at a table in a corner which is fine. However after about five minutes of sitting there we kind of looked at ourselves and said I wonder how long it’s gonna take for service as there were numerous servers that had already walked by us the table next to us had already consumed multiple rounds of drinks and received their food. 25 minutes not one server asked if we had been helped, even though multiple of them walked by us. No water no menus nothing. Beyond one of the most disappointing situations that I have ever encountered at a restaurant. Incredibly unprofessional I would not recommend it to anyone.
Had a reservation for outdoor seating @ 7:30, and was told we could not be seated outside for another hour. Food is always delicious here but service was extremely slow! Waited on drinks for over 30 minutes and waited on small plates for 45 + minutes. Ordered a dish and waiter kept telling us it was coming, 45 minutes later he comes and says they’re all out of what we ordered. Waiter was friendly and apologized for everything. Manager was able to comp 2 appetizers for us.
Love the food and atmosphere but it’s extremely chaotic and service is super slow!
Our appetizers took forever to get to our table. The paella was under cooked. The beef empanadas were salty. Our waiter didn't seem like he wanted to work or at least not serving us. I was very disappointed because the first time we went to this restaurant our experience was the complete opposite.
Sitting on the patio was nice. Redfish special was good. But stay away from the paella. Not good.
I was excited about this restaurant because of the menu items. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive however the drinks and appetizers took extremely long to arrive at our table. I ordered a couple of appetizers (tapas) and they were good but the drinks were very bad. We decided to ordered a large paella for the three of us. The paella was extremely salty so we did not eat it. We were in Downtown to watch a dancing show so we needed to leave but before we left we ordered some empanadas (6) to go since we’re still hungry. Later that night we took a bite of the empanadas and they tasted like pure salt! We threw them in the trash! I don’t recommend this place!
Twice in the last 3 months this restaurant has accepted my reservation only to get a call 30 minutes prior to reservation time saying the restaurant was closed or closing early.
Took more than 30mins to get a drink. Didn’t get told there was no salmon until the food for the rest of the guests had arrived. Birthday girl was with no food until 1 hour Later. Everyone was done eating when her food arrived.
Batanga’s aesthetics did not disappoint. Food was creative and flavorful. Our server was attentive and friendly. The cocktails were the best part . For a Saturday, it was not crowded at all. We will definitely be back!
Was our first time here. Overall it was a great experience. Several food items took extremely long to get to us, but we will definitely be coming back. Thanks
Used to be an awesome place. Every time We go to Houston it was a must to stop by Batanga. Not Anymore. Really disappointing experience.
Wish I would have paid attention to the reviews before making reservations here. The patio area was nice and there weren't many people there on a Sunday evening, which was ideal. However, the food was subpar at best. The flavor was absolutely lacking in every dish we ordered. Things were either way overcooked or undercooked and one of the people in our party never had her paella order put in (which takes 30-40 mins to prepare) so they didn't get to eat. Small plates took a long time to come out and the service could have been more attentive and organized. Overpriced for a paella and breakfast potatoes ("patatas bravas") I can make better at home.
This was the worst place I've ever been to in Houston. The ambiance is nice which made it look promising but the service was terrible. The waiter (Christopher) never took our order on time, would bring the wrong items, bring food late, triple charged us for items and didn't remove them off the receipt, forgot to put in items and when we asked about it said the kitchen is closed...He barely knew how to do his job and made the experience terrible for our friend's birthday, I'm shocked he is still employed there, he needs some serious training or needs to be let go.
Batanga is really nice! Very well put together atmosphere, good food. My only complaint is that service is slow, but that is happening everywhere. Overall a really nice place!
They were out of empanadas and nachos by 8 pm on Saturday night….. we were told that if your want the empanadas then Saturday is not a good day to come because they sell out fast. Definitely fewer options on the menu than what I remember from going here in the past.
We were celebrating a friends wedding and it was very disappointing. I will not be coming back, even though we live a block away.
We didn’t get water or a waiter for about 25mins after sitting down and the night continued on like that.
The restaurant itself is very cute, clean and spacious. We arrived for brunch on Saturday and our waiter Christopher was excellent, he was very attentive and fun and we appreciate his positive attitude. The food was overall good. It was four of us and we shared the Brunch Skillet which was excellent, the Migas which lacked some flavor they were pretty bland, the shrimp tacos were good and the patatas bravas which were ok but not very bravas. We also ordered the chorizo mac and cheese but it never came out so it got taken off of our bill. We got a carafe of Mimosa for $13 to split between the 4 of us and that was good enough for us. Overall the experience was nice, I'd like to return in the evening to hear the band and try the dinner menu.
We wanted a light bite before going to a concert at Jones Hall - this seemed to be a good place to try. We have done Tapas style before I know it can be a bit slower paced, but we explained to our server we did have to be out at a certain time - but we had over a hour. We were assured that it would be fine. Not exactly how it went.
It look 15 min to get drinks and order - then it was 30 min before the first plate arrived and another 15 before we had the rest. One dish never came and out server insisted I never ordered it. Since it was my “entree” dish - I’m fairly certain of what I ordered……
The place itself was nice, the noise level was low enough to have a nice conversation. The food was pretty good. The ceviche was actually one of the best I have had. The potato bravos were good - but no remarkable. Hubs had the rib eye and the wedge salad - the salad being the better of those dishes. Sadly the pork belly I ordered was the MIA dish so we will never know.
Lobster bisque had too much seasoning to my taste. Yuca chips were good but not the aioli. Beef empanadas were nice. Frito plate was ok. Tuna nachos were good. Service was very nice and the place was cute.
Service was not good. It was not busy. Went on a Tuesday. Messed up our app order. He didn’t ask if we wanted to replace it. We let it go. We politely waited for our food. Time went by and waiter kept saying it was on the way. Waited longer and finally asked to leave if the food was not made already. He said that they hadn’t even started making it. Why tell us it was on the way and have us wait. We didn’t get a chance to really eat there all we had were two apps. Can’t say much about the food, we were really excited to eat there because of the ambiance.
Restaurant wasn’t busy at all which was nice so service should have been on point. Instead we waited for what seemed to be forever for drinks, our dinners were served 20 minutes apart (party of 2). Was told due to short staff in kitchen, yet there was no order placed after our for at least 30 minutes. Waitress never once approached table after food was served. Getting drinks refilled never happened. Finally sat for 30-45 minutes waiting to leave. Will never go back.
Very cool atmosphere and delicious food & drinks! Recommend the mango mojito, the burrata, and the tres leches! They shouldn't let anyone leave without trying the tres leches :)
I’ll never dine here again.
Food was terrible.
Patio was packed with flies.
Great food, great service.
Just awful - we actually walked out before ordering. We sat there asking for a menu - the scanning not working for people without perfect eyesight. We waited for a while then a guy brought us one menu for 4 people. He gave me an attitude then he brought 3 more telling us that this is not the latest Menu and some items are not available and prices are wrong. He never explained what items he referred to but just walked off. I would not say a thing if he would have been busy but the place was close to empty. We got up and walked out. Sad because I used to like that place but that service was just horrible. Maybe he should not be on the service industry!
Love this place great new menu and great drinks
The food takes too long and not everyone’s food comes at the same time.
My daughter and I went to Batanga before going to Jones Hall. The restaurant was not busy so we had time to discuss our food options with Steven, our waiter. He was very knowledgeable and gave us good info. He was pleasant and non- intrusive. The food was so good- especially the ahi tuna nachos. I will be sure to order that again the next time we visit.
Reservation was for 8. Server came to greet us, was polite but we could tell he would rather be anywhere else. Appetizers came out first. Took 30 mins to get out drinks. By 8:35 the serve was asking to take our entree order. This was our first time dining there so we weren’t familiar with the menu and needed a little more time, also we had barely just gotten our drinks and wanted a little time to just hang out and have conversation. He then informed us that we need to make our selections soon because the kitchen would be closing in 10 mins. (The restaurant hours are until 10pm, it was only 8:35 at this point) no where on the website or during the reservation process does it inform you of the difference in kitchen hours. We rushed to make our selections, have of the options we wanted our server said they were out of and the other entrees we tried to order he said it was “too late to make the larger dishes because that part of the kitchen is already closed.” (Out of oysters, scallops, told us we couldn’t order small paella because it was “such a big plate” menu says it serves 1) we altered our selections. There was 4 in our party, he brought the first 2 plates, 5 mins later brought the 3rd plate and 10 mins after that brought the 4th guests plate. Food looked nothing like the pictures, and Tasted terrible. Will not be returning. Would leave less than a star if possible.
Food was good, tapas portions came out hot and were ample. Service was reasonably efficient. Biggest disappointment was the outside dining. Tables looked dirty, menu with QR code had food stains on it, the entire outdoor area looked rundown and neglected. Definitely not as pristine as the picture on their website.
I had put in a special request to have them bring my Bestfriend dessert since we were celebrating her birthday but it never happened. I’m sure it was suppose to be the hostess job to let my server know but she was too busy chatting with her friends. Also although I waited the 45+ minutes for my small paella to be cooked the rice or whatever it is was still raw
Poor service. The person who took us to our table did not care to check us in through the open door reservation. He was extremely unprofessional and was rude. Our waiter was better but lacking in service. Our appetizer was ok but our main entree was dry and the yucca chips that came with it was burnt.
The food was great and our server was very informative, courteous and friendly. All the staff was actually wonderful, although they were not attending our table they were all nice. I will be returning to this very cute place.
A disappointment. Meatballs were overcooked and dry; grilled octopus was just "okay"
Food & service have gone really downhill. We had to ask for my drink after the second tapa had arrived. She brought the wrong ones & no glass for my bottle of Topo Chico. One item never came. It was a mess.
