Definitely have the escargot. A good wine list. Flavors were great. Some of the proportions were odd (huge amount of quinoa compared to half a duck breast). Some noisy guests was my only complaint but it may have been a one-time thing.
If you are looking for a safe place to eat during the pandemic, Bastille's patio dining is the safest that we've found in Old Town. Nice, widely-spaced tables looking out over a lawn. Add to it, the first-class French cooking. Having lived in Paris for 7 years, we are always looking for authentic French food and Bastille has never disappointed.
Great outdoor patio. Felt safe. Cute ambiance. Excellent service and food.
The food was very good as was the service. Definite recommend to our friends!
Always a great meal at a good price. Always interesting cocktails!
Overall, excellent food and service. Have a very good meal and dinner expereince
Went here for a birthday dinner. Great food, amazing wine selection, good service, covid-friendly setup. Looking forward to coming back.
We chose Bastille for our 15th anniversary because of the other reviews, a desire for French cuisine, and their COVID precautions. We had a wonderful time and have no complaints about any part of the meal or about our experience there. The food was outstanding, even beyond what we expected based on the other reviews. We will definitely be coming back.
Great meal @Bastille, as usual. They have made significant headway to mitigate the spread of the virus with masked wait staff and servers. The food is up to it's usual high standards and came to the table piping hot and delicious.
My only complaint, and it's a small one, as the menu came to us in a plastic wrapped folder. This freaked us out for even though it may have been "wiped down" by staff, other restaurants we have been to use a freshly printed (thin paper) menu that the waiter destroys in front of you after you have touched it and has taken your order. This way there is no contamination possible and makes us feel more secure. To us it's a small expense with a big payoff for Bastille to consider.
Hi Michael, we're glad you had a great meal and enjoyable service with us. While we understand your worry in terms of our menu presentation, we wanted to let you know that even though our menus are in plastic, they are only used once by a customer and then sanitized immediately by a member of our team, who wears fresh gloves each time, to limit the amount of contact. QR Codes are also on every table, if not comfortable using the physical menu.
We heard that Bastille was open for inside seating 4 months after they had opened. Better late than never! Love Sunday Brunch. Victoria is one of our favorite waitresses. We started with a Kir Royale & the croissant/chocolate croissant basket. Delicious! Hubby had French onion soup while I tried the sweet potato bisque...both were excellent. Entrees were Steak & eggs and Quiche Lorraine. Ended with Profiteroles & Pot de Crème, as well as cappuccinos. What a wonderful feast! Looking forward to our next visit.
Great food served in a well-socially distanced, well appointed dining room by an excellent (French speaking) server.
Feel perfectly safe in Bastille’s outdoor space and enjoy the cosseting you remember from restaurants pre-pandemic. Proper cocktails, great food, attentive staff, no worries. It’s ALL good.
Party of 10 in same dining room was loud. Not the restaurant’s fault.
Clean and comfortable.
Enjoyed the entire meal, our server was very helpful with descriptions and suggestions of wine to go with our meal. The Escargot was outstanding! Mussels done in the classic style were one of the best I had in a long time. They were offering a special of 3 courses for $35 which was a bargain for selection, preparation and the quality of the food.
My husband and I had a great meal at Bastille recently. In fact, we agreed that it's the best meal we've had in 2020. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, many restaurants are providing good food but not a lot of ambiance. Bastille managed to provide a fine-dining feel on their lovely back patio without compromising safety. The food was exceptional, the service was great, and the setting felt energetic without being crowded. Our evening there was special and memorable during a crazy year.
A group of three, we arrived along with a forecast of rain, but we were allowed to be seated on the patio. Luckily, the rain never materialized, and we had the patio all to ourselves for two hours. As always at Bastille, our server was prompt and very professional. I love the fact that their new(ish) location is out of the King Street tourist circus
Our cocktails (Old Fashions & Negronis) were delicious, and enjoyed along with the delightful Rilettes de Saumon. All of our entrees, including roast duck, mussels, and a burger were outstanding representatives of their kind.
Thank you Bastille for a wonderful
Veronica was great and have a great knowledge of wine
Another fantastic family meal at Bastille. Sitting outside on the patio, socially distanced and enjoying the food and weather. This really is a neighborhood gem!
Bastille was top notch once again. I was nervous to dine inside during COVID, but when it started raining outside, we moved to an inside table. They have it set up perfectly. Also the staff wore masks the entire time, and did not come to close into your personal space. Now the food. Oh the food. It is always spectacular, and the new fall menu is no different. We had the escargot (and MUST here), the duck (I rarely get anything else), and the Coq au Vin. All of it wonderful. But the star was a new dessert, Roulade de Noisettes a la Citrouille. Made with love by the amazing pastry chef, it was a harmony of flavors and texture. And huge, enough to share. I always give Bastille 5 starts because frankly, they always earn it.
We went to Bastille for an anniversary dinner, which we noted in our OpenTable reservation. We were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne, and an attentive waitress who took care to explain how to get best value from the three-course prix fixe menu. We opted to order a la carte, skipping dessert and doubling up on appetizers. The escargots, confit wings, ceasar salad, and French onion soup were all standout dishes, as was the coq au vin my wife ordered. My steak frites were very good, but the coq au vin is better. Worth a trip to have it.
First time dining for our anniversary and happy we picked Bastille. Service was prompt, social distancing and masks observed. We had the 3-course tasting with a charcuterie and fromage plate added. Plenty of tasty food. Bastille also presented us with complimentary champagne to end the celebratory evening. Definitely a new favorite.
We used to love going to Bastille and were excited to return after half a year of social distancing. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. Seems they are trying to do everything to cut costs and it reflects in the food and especially the portions. For the same price, we used to get double the mussels - just one example. The quality has gone down too, e.g. the wings are oversalted and otherwise flavorless. It's too bad, but we probably will not return.
Always delicious french food at very reasonable prices!
Great service, ambiance, and experience. Excellent food as well!
The food was excellent. I would definitely recommend it to friends.
The meal was fantastic. Service was good, but not exceptional. Outdoor seating was lovely and quite.
Very nice meal and crafted cocktails. Post-Covid dining is not as special; the simple loss of tablecloths and specials were missed and hopefully return soon!
Hi Lori! Thank you for your review. Just one thing, we never had tablecloths, not in 14 years. So sorry to disappoint you, but other than special holidays (Valentines) we just haven't ever used them. We do that to try and keep our pricing lower. As for our specials, we typically have daily specials, both entree and dessert and if they were not offered then our deepest apologies. We do hope you understand and we look forward to seeing you back again soon.
Great food without outrageous prices. My favorite brunch place.
We chose Bastille to celebrate a sister's birthday. We could not have made a better choice. We had wonderful, friendly service, made all the better by the fact that our server hailed from the same place in Ulster that my wife's ancestors came from. Bastille cuisine was superb and ambience was terrific. It was our first time on the back patio. The tables were well spaced, it was quiet despite a "full house," and conversation was easy.
We'll be back!
The food, as usual, did not disappoint. Service attentive and friendly. The only down was the fact that they did not acknowledge it was a birthday reservation, which I think was marked on the reservation. But overall, very good experience
The food was fantastic with wonderful flavors and textures! The best dinner we've had in Alexandria!
Venturing out for the first time since the pandemic, it was such a treat to go out. Of course sitting indoors for us is not an option yet but Bastille had outdoor dining so all was good. You can’t go to a French restaurant without being tempted with Mussels cooked in White wine...my favorite along with a light salad, I was good to go! My husband enjoyed a wonderful, delicious ‘Corn Vichyssoise Soup.’ Oh my it was the best Vichyssoise I’ve tasted this side of the Pond. My husband also had the ‘Magret de Canard’ (Duck Breast). Not a morsel remained. Our Server, ‘Ash’ was great...loved listening to her Irish accent. She was gracious and as busy as she was (and the restaurant was busy), she made sure to check back with us several times. Hope to visit Bastille again on another trip back to Alexandria. It’s where the locals hang out!
Excellent service. Very good selection of food. Prepared nicely. Good value
The duck was fantastic, and the cocktails were amazing. Our server was attentive, gave good suggestions, and acted very french in a fun way.
It was so nice to dine at a restaurant again. We felt very comfortable out on the patio. Everyone in our party enjoyed all of their food. The service was very attentive.
The food was delicious, and the wine menu was quite decent. But the inside of the restaurant was way too cold to be comfortable.
Quiet Tuesday night dinner with my best girl went really well at Bastille. Indoor seating wide open but carryout people were a steady flow. As for us, we shared pate which was very good and very dense, and well matched with a fruit chutney I believe. For mains, she had the duck, and I the steak. Both were very good, but the duck was done perfectly and the accompanying blackberry (?) jus paired really well. I was happy to help finish the duck. We will be back here!
Another wonderful experience. Sitting on the patio we felt like normal people again. The bartender is particularly skilled at making vesper martini‘s. In the past the steak Frites are terrific but this time I had the salmon and orzo and it was terrific
It was lovely sitting out on the patio for the extended restaurant week. Good social distancing and felt safe.
