Loved it! Sat outside under a heat lamp on the patio. Food was yummy and staff was very thoughtful! Will definitely go back again!
We have dined at Bastille too many times to count. Never disappointed.
The food was underwhelming and overpriced. I ordered the eggs benedict, which was nothing more than a corissant. $16 for bread. Thanks, Bastille. I won't be back.
Anonymous-Well, eggs benedict does comes with a croissant, but also smoked salmon, poached eggs & hollandaise sauce, Yukon Gold home fries & a small salad. We aren't sure how you would have only received just a croissant? Did you mention anything to the manager? We always strive to ensure that guests are happy while dining with us, so alerting us while there allows us to fix any problems. We are sorry you won't return. It would allow us to show you that we stand behind what we do and serve.
We used to live a few blocks from Bastille's old location, and we loved it. We ate at their current after several years away from the area and loved it! The food was delicious, the service was OUTSTANDING, and the ambiance was comfortable and relaxing, in spite of the current pandemic.
Matt-Thank you for your review. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we did! We are happy to share your words with our wonderful staff. We look forward to serving you again soon. Happy New Year!!
Fantastic French cuisine! Excellent service. The fixed Dinner menu was great for the wallet! Loved the special Jerusalem Artichoke soup, Steak Frites and the orange chocolate dessert was outstanding. Taking all the necessary precautions, we felt very safe sitting inside. Staff was friendly and the manager came around to ask us how we were doing. Keep up the good work. We highly recommend this place!
Sara-Thank you for your review. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we did! We are happy to share your words with our wonderful staff. We look forward to serving you again soon. Happy New Year!!
We have long loved Bastille and they have adjusted to current demands so thoughtfully. We dined on the patio and the wood fire in the chiminea was lovely and warming. The electric heaters added additional warmth and we were given 10% off our bill for bringing our own blankets! The food was perfect as always. The service was friendly and yet respectful of distancing. Bastille has been a winner for us every time for several years. Now it's an especially welcome break from the pandemic routine.
As we were parking our car outside (being 1 minute late), we received a call, being told that the kitchen is closing in 15 minutes. We didn't see any information about this prior to our arrival. As we arrived, the host almost immediately tried taking us to our table without offering us to check our coats. As we were seated we were once again reminded that the kitchen closes soon. We ordered our 4 course and the time between each course was aproximately 2-5 minutes, which again felt like we were being rushed through our meals. The food wasn't anything outstanding.
We apologize for any misunderstanding on NYE. By no means, did we ever mean to make you feel rushed or unappreciated. Please accept out sincerest apologies for your experience. With the new guidelines regarding alcohol sales and consumption, your server incorrectly thought it meant full closure at 10pm. It would mean a lot to us, if you give us the chance to show you we stand by our apology and our hospitality. If you would like to contact me, reach out to chefmichelle@bastillerestaurantcom
Excellent experience! Fantastic food.
Amazing food, good service, perfect atmosphere! Highly recommended!
Everything was delicious and just a little different from similar plates at different restaurants to keep it interesting in taste and presentation. Love Bastille!
Brandi-Thank you for your review. We enjoyed serving you and wish you a Happy New Year!!
This was a very disappointing evening - especially considering it was our Wedding Anniversary. The food was below average, and nothing was served hot. It is one of the worst dining experiences we have had in the Washington, DC area. (We have lived here for several decades, and eat out several times a week).
We usually choose a very special place for our Anniversary - but due to COVID, our options were very limited this year.
Reviews are surprisingly good here, so perhaps the Chef and regular staff were off?? But between my husband and me, neither one of us liked our appetizer or our main course.
How can you go wrong with Steak-Frites? Well somehow they managed to mess up both the steak and the frites for both of us! Not sure what was wrong with the steak - but the quality was awful, and it tasted inferior. It appeared to have been thawed and re-frozen. Nor did it have seasoning.
The fries were soggy, flavorless, and cold.
Appetizers of Caesar Salad and Lobster Bisque were average, at best.
We both left most of it on our plate - yet nobody bothered to ask us what was wrong. We did not want to ruin our Anniversary Date, so we decided to stay silent last night - but they should have inquired as to what was wrong.
Both of us were sick to our stomach when we got home!
Service was just OK. Greeting upon entrance was cold, like the weather.
And the Ambience was equally cold and austere. We felt like we were eating in a hospital cafeteria. Nothing special at all. The few decorations we saw could have been bought at the Dollar Store.
Again, sorry to be negative - but not what you expect from a place with this reputation, where you are paying $50 plus per person. We all understand that we are in the middle of pandemic - but when patrons are trying to support the Restaurant industry, it would be nice if they would also do their best to go above and beyond, and NOT cut corners! Be grateful to your customers for supporting you during these tough times!
Thank you for your review. While we are saddened that we made missteps with your dining experience. We want you to know that we value each word you wrote and are truly sorry that we missed an opportunity to provide you with the excellent service and food we are known for. We would like to offer dinner for 2, to make up for your experience and to show you that we stand behind our apology/our offer/our hospitality. We've been dining at Bastille for years and they never disappoint. Great service and food!
Christmas Eve dinner: I will begin by saying that the food was very good. However, it could not overcome the disappointment we had with our evening. We should have known that we were in for a rough experience when immediately upon being seated and presented with menus, we were asked if we were ready to order. While we certainly sympathize with restaurants and their struggles during Covid (we have been dining out 4 days per week for the last 6 months!), it is impossible to defend the overall service we received.
To be specific, our experiences included:
- Maître D entered the room in which we were seated about every 5 minutes and according to my wife, looked over my shoulder to check on the status of our meal
- The Manager (I believe?), did the same about 3 times
- My wife's empty plates were pulled while I was still (rapidly) eating
- Our desert silverware was placed while I was also still eating my entrée
- Our check arrived before we had both completed dessert
With the above being said, there were several dawdling tables in the room and the Maître D did inform the table next to ours that their table was needed. However, we were certainly not one of the problem tables and did not deserve the treatment we received. We don't make a point of dwelling past our welcome and realized going in that was an important night for restaurants.
To summarize, we had a 6:45 reservation and our credit card was swiped at 7:44. I think that is a bit rushed for a $190 experience. Upon departure we passed some of the same groups at tables in the other dining rooms seen when we arrived. I would have discussed this with the manager, however, things were still busy at the front end and my wife was in no mood to linger. Again, the food was very good while our overall experience left much to be desired.
Went there for Christmas' eve dinner. The foods were succulent, the desert was beautifully prepared and tasty and the service was top-notch. We love the buche de noel. Will definitely come back for the regular menu
Christie-Thank you for your review. It means a lot to us that you took the time to let us know how we did. We thank you for choosing Bastille and look forward to serving you in the new year! Happy 2021!!
A Christmas Eve to remember. Bastille does a wonderful job all of the time but Christmas Eve 2020 was magnificent. From the festive ambiance, and thoughtful staff to the outstanding food and service.
This is a local gem that always makes us feel special and well cared for.
We often get takeout and love their heated outdoor dining spaces.
Bastille is always a delight.
Thank you so much for letting us know how your dining experience went on Christmas Eve! We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We look forward to serving you again and wish you a wonderful New Year!!
The ambiance was fantastic and the the service was exceptionally executed. The only real criticism would have to be on the food. The escargot was warm, and I feel it is better served HOT. The Cassoulet was overcooked, which is a real shame as it traditionally is one of my all time favorite dishes. Would definitely try again; just wanted to pass along my thoughts.
Matteo-Thank you for letting us know how your dining experience was on the 23rd of December. We are sorry that your meal was not as perfect as it should have been! We hope you are willing to come back and let us show you that we are WAY better than warm escargot and overcooked Cassoulet. We wish you a wonderful new year and look forward to seeing you again!! Cheers!!
Excellent Sunday brunch. This is the real-deal French here in Old Town Alexandria. Their COVID protocols are on point. Excellent value, unbelievable flavor, great craft cocktails. Highly recommend!
Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We enjoyed serving you and wish you a Happy New Year!!
The outdoor dining area needs more heat, particularly during this pandemic season. Cuisine and service both wonderful.
Yes, we agree, but we were beholden to the shipping gods! We have finally received more of our heaters and are still awaiting 2 more to arrive. We enjoyed serving you and look forward to serving you again in the Happy New Year!!
The food was above and beyond expectations- delicious! We had the Camembert burger and scallops. Service was great. And best of all - it was all outside on the patio, with a wood fire keeping us warm. What a lovely evening.
The food was amazing as always! The Cassoulet was fantastic and the perfect cold weather comfort dish. The banana bread dessert was to die for. I am really grateful for the option to eat outside right now, but think another heat source would be great.
I ate outside and brought my own blanket! I realized after the fact that I did not get the 10 percent discount, unless it was factored into my meal somewhere. That said, my service was very very good. My waiter had some solid recommendations with regards to champagne that I really enjoyed. The food was just good I thought. I found some hard parts in the coq au vin that I had.
Another fabulous visit to a neighborhood favorite. We love visiting Bastille, the staff are super friendly and welcoming, the food is delicious and great value and Covid precautions are taken very seriously.
Jamie-Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on your dining experience at Bastille. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know what we did right (and wrong). We are here because of your support and look forward to serving you again! Here's to a bright 2021!!
Food and cocktails were outstanding. Very knowledgeable waitstaff.
While I understand we're in the middle of a pandemic, if you venture out to eat and find yourself at a restaurant with literally only one other table of 2, you expect at least decent service. The service here this morning for brunch was truly terrible -- multiple times I was found looking around for my server only to see her on her phone or behind the bar, leaning on the counter, and chitchatting with other employees. I rarely feel compelled to write negative reviews, but being charged what I was for truly middling food served in small portions and experiencing service in this way.. I felt I had to.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are truly sorry that you experienced a less than professional staff member during your time with us. We always want out guests to leave happy. Did you reach out to our manager on duty while you were with us this past Sunday? We would love to know more about your experience. Please reach out to our restaurant manager, John Kilkenny at your convenience. We appreciate your candor and we would like the opportunity to change your mind for a return visit.
Continued excellence from Christophe and his staff

Excellent dinner venue for casual dining with friends. Service and quality of food were outstanding.
Amazing restaurant! The food is incredible and the service is unparalleled. A must for a date night or just a great meal
While recognizing the difficult situation that restaurants and their employees are in, those of us who are eating out now are trying to help. We are showing up and showing support. My dinner this week at Bastille was disappointing not in the food or the service itself, but in that I had the distinct impression that the atmosphere was one not of welcoming but of eagerness for us to leave. Felt rushed, staff were curt and unfriendly. Perhaps that makes the place authentic in that it felt not unlike eating out in Paris where your patronage is often rewarded with a sense that the staff is annoyed by your presence.
Exceptional service and great ambience. Outdoor wood pit was warm but very smoky. Needed to wash clothes afterwards.
The outdoor seating and service was great. I loved the ability to book an outdoor table in advance. It was comfortable due to the 2 fire pits lit up by our side. The main issue I have had was with the food. I ordered a galette only to find out it was a fancy name for a pizza, a pretty expensive one at that. Food was flavorless. Even the dessert was bland. I walked away hungry because everything I tried was bad so I did not eat it. I ended up making a stop at Mai Thai on my way home and picked up something to go after spending over $100 on a meal I did not eat. Will not be going back again.
Hi Bernard, Thank you for joining us Saturday the 14th. We would have loved to take care of your issues while you were with us, if you had given us the opportunity. Our staff is there to assist in any way needed to ensure that you had an enjoyable experience. We would like the offer an invite to you, to come back and see if we could change your mind. Be Safe/Be Well Bastille Management
The food was Excellent. First time eating here and brought some friends. Everyone enjoyed the food and themselves. I mainly came because I saw Coq au vin on the menu and I will come back again for it.
Main dishes were excellent - seared scallops and spinach risotto. French onion soup though was not very impressive. Escargot missed it a bit too. Bread at table was very basic white baguette. Improvable. Service was friendly and very responsive and helpful. Overall the place was good - cold outside though and that affected things a little though unprompted the wait staff brought hot water. Covid restrictions observed adequately.
Classic bistro atmosphere and excellent food. Will be returning. Service a bit spotty due to COVID limitations but still an enjoyable and affordable evening for the value received.
Larby is a very good waiter. Friendly and eager to satisfy his customers.
I don’t know what happened as we have had wonderful meals at this restaurant. Staff great but food very disappointing on our recent visit.
Andres-Would love to know more about your disappointment with your dinner Friday, November 6th. Please reach out to us at chefmichelle@bastillerestaurantcom Thank you and have a great New Year!!
Outstanding food from the Happy Hour and Bistro Menu. Bastille is well equipped for cooler temperatures outside with wood burning heaters and ambient lighting and outstanding service.
A lovely quiet meal where the attention from the staff was attentive without being intrusive. Food, as always, was very good. Sensibly spaced tables meant we never felt at risk. We will be going back again.
