We had brunch and it was great - a little pricey but overall the food was good. The staff was attentive. We will try for dinner sometime.
A real neighborhood gem! The food was delicious, and service friendly. I LOVE the portion sizes. Enough to fill up, and small enough to allow for a comfortable 3 course meal. The food was impeccable. Risotto was so flavorful, and didn't get gummy after 5 minutes...which means it was cooked correctly! (Unlike when I cook risotto, lol!) The creme brulee was tasty, though slightly undercooked...not an easy mistake to avoid. My friend's dessert, chocolate gateau was devine!
Really fantastic meal, even more so because the weather was finally decent on a weekend this spring in Alexandria. Yeah! Our food and service were exceptional. The only thing which couldn't be helped was the wind, which was really blowing strong and worried us because chairs and other items on tables were blowing around, and the umbrellas seemed to want to pick up and launch--but nothing got too crazy. Our meal was a wonderful experience, we didn't feel rushed, and we enjoyed it immensely. Best meal at Bastille in a long time, too, even though it's always a good experience, this was better than usual.
We had been there multiple times. Food quality has significantly diminished. No one was pleased with their Meals.
A friend and I go to Le Bastille at least once a month because of the great food at reasonable prices.
Overall food was very good, but expensive, so save for a special occasion.
Very delicious but extremely heavy - mushroom soup was so thick and heavy it could have been cut with a knife - could not begin to finish it and hope to enjoy dinner.
Escargot is a pass - again drowning in heavy rich sauce with too much salt. The Paella was very tasty, fish was perfect. They were slow to pour second glass of wine -had to ask twice. Crowd was mostly seniors, not sure if the outdoor dining would lighten up the ambience. $130 for two.
Bastille serves great food in a serene urban environment. The service is thoughtful without being intrusive. The portion sizes are ample. There is a 3-course lunch special for those with hearty appetites.
Fabulous as usual - food preparation, ingredients, plate presentation, service all top notch!!
The Easter Brunch was delicious! Our waiter, Charles, was very polite and never missed a step from beginning to end. This has become our go-to restaurant, being only 3 blocks away from our home. A wonderful meal and we'll be back for more!!
Wonderful patio brunch - world class!
We wanted normalcy in our lives after spending too much time in hospitals (hubby has 2 heart procedures). Bastille feels like home with a welcoming staff & delicious food. Saturday brunch (3 courses for $49) was far nicer than the crowds on Easter Sunday. They make a great Kir Royal w/ lemon peel. Barry loved the Mushroom veloute while I enjoyed the 3 shrimp beignets atop guacamole. He chose the hanger steak & duck fat fries for his entrée & I had an incredible salmon filet over artichoke risotto. We even had dessert! I chose the Snickerdoodle doughnuts w/ caramel dip as he dug into a chocolate chunk cookie sandwich (chocolate ice cream, fudge & caramel sauce inside). We both had perfect Cappuccinos. The bonus is driving home along the GW Pkwy past the eagles' nest.
Amazing 4 course prix fixe
The wait staff seem grumpy. First waitress was asked about the "lunch special" advertised on a board outside and she said she knew nothing about it!
We asked her if the wobbly table could be steadied but she said it's always like this.
We were told to move to the bar area if we wanted the fixed price menu - seemed unnecessary since so few people were in the restaurant. The waiter there was none too helpful when we asked about the choices we could make on the fixed price menu. He was slow to wait on us.
All in all, this is not the Bastille I knew from when you were near the River.
I have tried this restaurant twice - before this occasion I was persuaded by the waiter to order a newly baked cake "that was really special". My friend and I declined but he persuaded us to at least share one piece. It was awful. Full of artificial cream and icing at the cost of $14.
I used to frequent the old Bastille regularly and it was always lovely. This new place is nickel and diming you and being silly about what menu you can have in which seats....
Lovely French Night Out!
Service was excellent and food was delicious. Best roasted chicken I’ve ever had. The shrimp beignets were light and unique. And the desserts were flavorful and decadent - as you’d expect from a French restaurant. I would definitely go back.
Amazing! Fabulous food and excellent service. Bastille never disappoints
My wife and I have been to Bastille a couple of times and like it very much. We often come here after one of us getting picked up at DCA as the restaurant is on the way home. The ambiance is contemporary but comfortably casual. I would feel comfortable wearing either a suit or nice jeans or anything in between. It also has the feel of a friendly, neighborhood spot. On our last visit, we chatted with our table neighbors about the wine selection.
On our last visit, I enjoyed the Onglet a l’echalotte and my wife had the Bouillabaisse. They have a nice feature on the menu where you can get a three course Prix Fixe for $39 and a four course Prix Fixe for $49. It is definitely worth it if you like the selections. My ‘hanger steak’ was prepared at exactly the temperature I like it and the Cabernet sauce is really a nice complement. I usually end up asking for a little extra it is so good. My wife’s Bouillabaisse was also well prepared and delicious. We have both had this same meal a couple of times here and while the restaurant is consistently good, the last visit was not quite at the usual level. Not concerning enough to be a problem, but definitely noticeable. We’ll be back, of course, and hopefully it will prove to be an aberration.
Definitely sign up for their mailing list. They do a wonderful job of keeping in touch and doing special events for their ‘regulars’ on the list.
If you haven’t been here, this is an addition for your ‘need to try’ list in Alexandria.
A local gem, with excellent food and service. There were great options for both the meat-eaters and vegetarian in our group, and the hummus, quinoa/cauliflower/watercress salad, vegetarian onion soup, hanger steak and vegetable risotto were all delicious and beautifully presented. We go out in Old Town a lot, and the food and ambience at Bastille beats the other restaurants along King Street by far.
Not terribly impressed with the server. Typically service is exemplary so this was a surprise. The food was extraordinarily delicious as always.
The prix fixe lunch offers a terrific meal! Tons of food, though, be aware. The salmon and sunchoke risotto was delicious , flavorful, perfectly prepared.
The place was very quaint and service was excellent. Overall we had a great experience. However food was bland and nothing to write home about and prices were very high compared to the quality.
Birthday celebration. Waiter was very nice. Non-pretentious. The food was excellent: steak, beignet crevette, profiteroles, sparkling wine. The atmosphere was fairly plain and some people were overly casual (sweatshirt with slogan and a baby crying quite a bit). When going out to celebrate, spend $200 and eat French food, I didn’t expect fast food dress code & infants...but this wasn’t the restaurant’s fault. I would definitely go there again for the superior food.
Great French food; bad French service
I went twice in a week. Hanger steak was delish! Desserts are amazing. Service is great! I can't wait to come back for brunch!
We enjoyed our meal at Bastille. I prefer Bastille's ambiance, but I think Le Refuge's food is better.
Bastille surpassed my expectations. I ordered the prix-fixe meal and was impressed with the variety of flavors, textures, and compositions of the dishes. The server was very nice and efficient so my friend and I had no trouble making out show at the nearby MetroStage after dining. I will be back if I'm in the Alexandria area again.
Celebrated my daughter-in-law’s birthday in style at Bastille. Freshly shucked oysters and beignet de crevettes were outstanding. As were the salmon, short ribs and steak. Wait staff was attentive and personable. A very special evening.
HAD A GREAT MEAL AND SERVICE WAS WONDERFUL. WE HAD A BABY WITH US AND THEY WERE SO HOSPITABLE. WE WOULD DEFINITELY COME BACK!
We attended the Loire Valley wine dinner, which was sold out, so the room was packed and noise levels were louder than normal. Food was absolutely incredible...best bite of the evening was the scallop carpaccio with grapefruit and ginger and just a sprinkle of sea salt. That salty crunch and those flavors together, heaven!
Attended the special wine dinner. The time between courses was insanely long, sometimes 40-45 minutes! A five course dinner took almost 4 hours. Sluggish service made us tired and full. Despite that, All courses were great except for one... the rabbit was strangely peppery and totally over braised. The meat was so so dry, disappointing cause it was main course of tasting. Star was definitely dessert.
After moving to Alexandria and looking for a go to restaurant...we have finally found it in Bastille. We love the food. Great service and great value!
Birthday dinner for our son. The menu offered plenty of choice and tasted great when it arrived. Wine list was very good, and our choice tasted great and was reasonably priced.
Very good food as usual. Their prix fixe menus area good value.
We had an amazing anniversary dinner there - great service, some lovely touches acknowledging the celebration, and really stellar food. The Sunday Sippers wine options were a fantastic surprise as well!
Bastille always hits the right notes. It’s why it’s my go to place for out of town visitors.
Fantastic food with high attention to interesting combinations and attention to detail on flavors. Delightful service with perfect balance of personal rapport without overstepping and high attentiveness without intrusion. Only knock was having a reservation and getting seated in lackluster overfill room in the back with only one other couple who was loud. Felt like we had joined them for dinner! we assumed more would be seated to up the ambiance but no we were left stranded back there alone. Surely got highly attentive service but was not the date night feel we'd been looking for. I'd go back for the food but refuse the back room. Especially with a reservation!
Friends told us Bastille was quite good and so we had to give it a try! The front dining room and bar area have the best ambiance however the booths and chairs are bit low for the table height. The bar chairs could use some cushions, for added comfort. The service was very good and the food choices for each menu were delicious. We especially love their beef main under the Brasserie menu. Their soups are full of flavor. The wine selection is very good! We went twice in a week for our birthdays and V-day. Both times did not disappoint in any way, shape, or form. Parking was easy and we look forward to better weather and hopefully sitting outside like a cafe in France.
Beautiful ambiance, great wine, and phenomenal paella special! Highly recommend.
