Our goal is to capture the essence of a tapas bar and share it with San Francisco. barvale, located at 661 Divisadero Street in San Francisco’s NoPa neighborhood, is designed to be a transitional space that transports and delights. It will also function as a meeting spot for friends and as a stop among many on an evening out. Our bar will serve unpretentious cocktails, Spanish wine, sherry, and cider. Food–paella included–will be served tapas style. barvale is the essence of Spanish culture; it will be inexpensive and filled with people enjoying bites and drinks late into the night.

I really enjoyed our first meal at Barvale and look forward to returning and trying some of the other dishes on the menu.

Octopus was too salty and not very much - mainly a dish of potatoes. They were out of so many wines and also out of all coffee! Extremely loud. Hard to get the tables bused.

Great place to have dinner! The food is amazing. The portions are on the smaller side, so if you’re hungry, you’ll end up spending a good amount.

The pulpo, which looked good and plentiful in the pictures, had too little squid and and was lacking taste. The morcilla also lacked taste and the texture was a bit too soft. The paella, steak and croquettes were good.

Food is absolutely amazing! Our server, Taryn, was so energetic and fun to talk to, and also provided amazing, attentive service. We will definitely be going back!!

Ladies night out was fun at Barvale. The food was amazing! Reasonably priced menu. Paella is a MUST! Sangria too. It was very busy and loud with the restaurant staff singing and cheering for patrons’ birthdays. If you want an upbeat vibe and great food with lively friends, Barvale would be a great place to celebrate.

Loved the food. We were especially pleased with their paella, patatas bravas and French toast. Service was pleasant. Overall, it was a really nice experience. Will definitely come back!

Great place with awesome vibes for a Friday night. The food was excellent specially the oxtail and croquettes. Tried all their gin cocktails and they were beautiful and perfectly balanced. Highly recommend

The restaurant unexpected shut down for an ‘emergency’ and we were ushered out in under an hour without an explanation (or a discount...) normally I like this place, but odd experience this time.

Came in early ahead of our reservation, and was able to be sat right away. Great! But the server and hostess went back and forth on if the kitchen was ready to open yet, would have waited...

Some of the food came out very slow... one person was able to get through 2 main tapas before the steak which was RARE came out. Just didn't make a lot of sense.

Service was OK... nothing to rave about. No exit greeting, or question about how the food was... May try this place once more or may not...

The food was wonderful, drinks as well. The noise level makes it difficult to have a conversation when the place is full. It was pleasant once occupancy decreased to about 50% of capacity.

Great service every time I’ve been here this visit being probably my 4th or 5th. People who work here seem to enjoy their jobs, like people and are service oriented and know the food and drink menus well. I have to say, this trip the food was not as flavorful as it had been in the past, and since I brought some food business friends here, was feeling like I needed to apologize because it wasn’t as good as it had been for me in the past. Cocktails and liquor selections were great

We really enjoyed the variety and flavors! It was a little loud ? But maybe that’s just the vibe. We would go again. The pulpo was excellent. Service was great too.

What drives someone to choose one restaurant over another? The food, of course! And Barvales food came up a bit short. The presentations were uninspired and the portion sizes were small (yes, even for tapas). The seasoning was ok... Paella was the highlight of the meal and they did have nice vegetarian options. The ambiance and service were good, but for the price I expect a bit more. Unlikely to return.

The food is just ok. Nothing extraordinary. Portions are pretty small for tapas. We were a group of 6 and the table given to us was very uncomfortable. All wood block stools.

Good place for drinks / food with a larger group, we went with 8 people, shared small plates and cocktails, very good time. Food quality is strong, not mind-blowing but definitely high quality, portions are smart. I like this spot! Great for a get together.

Our original server was great! But we stayed longer drinking cocktails and chatting and in that time our original server left and the service after he left was not nice.

So disappointed in their new brunch setup. Told my server today that I am allergic to bell peppers and asked what would be safe. He basically said I should have the eggs on toast with grilled potatoes and walked away. So. In other words, the simplest, blandest menu item. When I finally did manage to order (a toast and a couple of sides), my meal effectively came in courses.

Then, when I asked if I could swap the a base spirit in one of their house cocktails (vodka to gin), he told me the bartender had said no and walked off before either suggesting an alternate possibility or giving me a new copy of the menu so I could make an alternate choice.

For a place that bills itself as a moderately upscale experience (with prices to match), I was very disappointed. I could have had the same meal at any local coffee shop for half the cost.

Great service - incredibly accommodating to large parties and provides helpful suggestions on portion sizes to order. It's difficult to pick a favorite dish, but the croquetas, patatas braves, setas (mushrooms), tortilla, and albondigas were among the top hitters for the hot tapas plates. Atmosphere is cozy but hip.

I really appreciate the inventiveness of some of the tapas here. Almost everything tastes really great. Favorites are the chickory salad and the morcilla. I preferred the fideua to the 'risotto', but it is still good. The smelts were the least fishy fish I've had, which is kind of strange.
Great cocktails.
Ambiance is a little strange. 1 time we went, they slowly started raising the volume of the music so by the time we left it was really loud like a night club. The other night they finally had the lights bright enough to see the food and menu, but about 30 minutes in they dimmed the lights down (as it got darker outside oddly enough).
Not really a complaint, but having 3 different people bring you food is a little odd. One seemed more like a chef and was great, the main waitress was fine, and then a more inexperienced young man who had a hard time pronouncing spanish also helped out once.
Definitely on the pricey side.

The food and drinks were good, but the meal was ruined by the noise. The restaurant was extremely loud to begin with, but periodically, the staff would emerge and bang pieces of metal against one another before pouring shots into patron’s mouths. Fun idea, but the metal on metal was jarring, intrusive and unpleasant. Towards the end of the meal I felt like I was at senor frog’s or some other spring break destination. I probably won’t return, but would reconsider if they’d eliminate the metal on metal.
