Barrio Star Ratings and Reviews
We chose Barrio Star for our dinner of 6 friends because we wanted good margaritas, tasty Mexican food, and a non-expensive, centrally located place. The food and margaritas were decent...when they finally arrived! Our table was not ready for our 6:30 Sunday evening reservation. When we were finally seated we were surrounded by tables of noisy children. It took 10 minutes to order our drinks, and another 10 minutes before they arrived. Not sure why they were so understaffed...only about half the tables were filled. The food was freshly prepared and authentic Mexican, but one of us had to send it back because it was cold. So all in all, not a stellar experience.
We've been going to Bario Star ever since it opened but I think we need to break up. The service has ALWAYS sucked, but now the food has been steadily going down hill. We ordered fish tacos on Friday night and they were so fishy we couldn't eat them. We also ordered the corn on the cob appetizer and it was horrible. I get it, if corn isn't in season, take it off of the menu. Finally, the guacamole tasted almost like it was store bought. They used to make a much more "fresh tasting" version. For what you get, the place isn't cheap, which would be fine, if it were good. But it has steadily declined. Makes me sad cause I still really love their margaritas.
Everything tasted great. The beans were cold so we asked for another bowl and they were cold again, but that may just have been some oddity of the evening. Otherwise, service and food were good. I will warn folks that the jalapeno blackberry margarita is super duper spicy. Don't lick you lips and do order a side of water.
We had a great time at Barrio Star! The place is unique, cozy and fun. The food was fantastic and a super good value. Our hostess and waitress was really friendly and the service was terrific. I think it is one of the better finds in uptown/downtown San Diego!
Had a last minute birthday need for 14. Booked a table for ten on Open Table and asked for a call back (3 hours before the party). Kyle called back and was awesome reserving a table for the entire party. The entire staff was incredibly helpful and the food and drink were fantastic too. Thanks Kyle and Team!
Just popped in for dinner with my wife and 2 year old. The little one is obsessed with chips and rice and beans so mexican places are always a safe choice. That said, the food here was delicious. I had a taco plate, as did my wife. Both were really well done and tasted extremely authentic. The chips were also homemade and were excellent (as per my 2 year old expert!). I had a couple glasses of sangria which were also good.
I had a reservation and although we arrived on time, it took a little while to get everything organized with the highchair etc (no big deal). Other than that, the service was quick and efficient.
All in all, it was a good experience. I would definitely go again.
We came for restaurant week and had a great experience! We appreciated the pace of the meal- we were in a relaxed mood and really taking our time but the courses came out at appropriate times- no rushing through. I had a margarita flight which was awesome. Loved our date night!
We were seated about 30 minutes after our reservation time. We ordered chips and salsa as an appetizer, but our food came out first. We didn't eat much of the chips and salsa but still had to pay for it. Overall it was an expensive dinner for not that great of service.
We decided to give Barrio Star one more try. The first time we ate there it was so delicious and the service was great - this was a couple of years ago. After that we had been back a couple more times with the last time having a horrrendous meal/service. I purchased a groupon and thought ok one more time. We were very happy - the service was great - the margarita flight was so yummy. My husband had the 3 taco plate and I had the pollo diablo. Both were great. It wasn't crowded so we think they've lost most of their clientele - but we will definitely be back hoping the meal/service stays spot on!
Our server was absolutely outstanding AND we found out it was her birthday at the end of the night. She gave us great recommendations of chile relleno for my boyfriend and I got the taco plate with the salmon, steak and spicy chicken options. We loved both and she was so kind! I wish I could remember her name... but her birthday is August 30! :)
Tried this on a whim because Open Table offered it up as a suggestion. Overall, it was pretty great. A couple little quirks keep it from a five-star experience (i.e. Undercooked rice in the side dish and an uninspiring tortilla soup), but everything else was great. Chips and salsa were just different enough from traditional to be notable. My husband had a carnitas torta and I had fish tacos, both of which were excellent. And even with undercooked rice, the flavor on the rice and beans side dish was great. The blood orange margarita was yummy. Service was spot on.
Had a friend in town and wanted to find something unique. Found this restaurant on OpenTable and never heard of it before but it seem to have great reviews. Amazing dinner. The customer service was awesome. They treated us like we were the only people in the restaurant. The food was good and I would highly recommend it. We will definitely be going back again in the future
