Too loud. Loud drunk hangout. Screaming drunks and rushed service. Understaffed employees work hard and need help. Hire more servers.
Always welcoming. Consistently delicious.
Barrio Star was awesome !! Good food and great atmosphere:)
First time was grest
Overall a very positive experience. Food was made fresh and excellent. However, service left something be desired. Forgot to bring not one but both our starters. Never checked in to see how we were enjoying our meal and seemed to be very rushed overall. I also noted he got the order at the table next to us wrong as I overheard him apologize to that group of four people as well when they left.
We rook a friend visiting from Brazil to try the food and she loved it!!
Had a wonderful Valentine’s Day dinner. Will be back very soon. One of the best Mexican restaurants in San Diego. Fantastic service. Great cocktails!
We chose Barrio Star for our dinner of 6 friends because we wanted good margaritas, tasty Mexican food, and a non-expensive, centrally located place. The food and margaritas were decent...when they finally arrived! Our table was not ready for our 6:30 Sunday evening reservation. When we were finally seated we were surrounded by tables of noisy children. It took 10 minutes to order our drinks, and another 10 minutes before they arrived. Not sure why they were so understaffed...only about half the tables were filled. The food was freshly prepared and authentic Mexican, but one of us had to send it back because it was cold. So all in all, not a stellar experience.
Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Terrific service with great recommendations for perfect margaritas. Some of the best guacamole we’ve had in a long time too. Decent menu variety in addition to the restaurant week specials during this visit.
Came here for restaurant week. What a great menu! We were able to try new items and was all for a very reasonable price. Margarita flight was awesome. Perfect for sharing. Will definitely be returning
We've been going to Bario Star ever since it opened but I think we need to break up. The service has ALWAYS sucked, but now the food has been steadily going down hill. We ordered fish tacos on Friday night and they were so fishy we couldn't eat them. We also ordered the corn on the cob appetizer and it was horrible. I get it, if corn isn't in season, take it off of the menu. Finally, the guacamole tasted almost like it was store bought. They used to make a much more "fresh tasting" version. For what you get, the place isn't cheap, which would be fine, if it were good. But it has steadily declined. Makes me sad cause I still really love their margaritas.
The Chile Relano was the most amazing dish. Can not wait to order it again. Margaritas were pretty tasty too!
Our server was fabulous. Great personality. Every dish was great. Especially carnitas!
Great atmosphere, drinks, and tacos! A fun place to get together with friends. Barrio Star has the perfect balance of lax and excitement
Everything tasted great. The beans were cold so we asked for another bowl and they were cold again, but that may just have been some oddity of the evening. Otherwise, service and food were good. I will warn folks that the jalapeno blackberry margarita is super duper spicy. Don't lick you lips and do order a side of water.
We had a great time at Barrio Star! The place is unique, cozy and fun. The food was fantastic and a super good value. Our hostess and waitress was really friendly and the service was terrific. I think it is one of the better finds in uptown/downtown San Diego!
Not impressed at all! overpriced! Food was Ok, service was very slow, and you could hear the bar tender tell his life story to the ladies at the bar.
Excellent restaurant, very much enjoyed the experience.
Good food, great service! Bllod orange margarita nummy!
Good food. Have been here for brunch once and it was also very good.
Had a last minute birthday need for 14. Booked a table for ten on Open Table and asked for a call back (3 hours before the party). Kyle called back and was awesome reserving a table for the entire party. The entire staff was incredibly helpful and the food and drink were fantastic too. Thanks Kyle and Team!
Great as always
I found the tacos to be sub-standard. I ordered two chicken and one beef tacos. The meat was dry and the rest of the ingredients in combination with the meat were not at ball tasty. Won't go back.
Wonderfully creative menu with great alternatives to standard Mexican foods, executed very well.
Just popped in for dinner with my wife and 2 year old. The little one is obsessed with chips and rice and beans so mexican places are always a safe choice. That said, the food here was delicious. I had a taco plate, as did my wife. Both were really well done and tasted extremely authentic. The chips were also homemade and were excellent (as per my 2 year old expert!). I had a couple glasses of sangria which were also good.
I had a reservation and although we arrived on time, it took a little while to get everything organized with the highchair etc (no big deal). Other than that, the service was quick and efficient.
All in all, it was a good experience. I would definitely go again.
Great ambiance. This reataurant vibes with the festive spirits which I assume each holiday or event occassion. Overall good experience. Recommended for groups.
Great service can't say that enough! Food was very flavorful and delicious. It is kind of pricey but a fun spot.
This place was pretty good, lively and the service was alright. The waitress tried hard to break it to us nicely that there was no chicken left in the restaurant (we had a 815p Rez). Blood orange margaritas were good.
As Always this Spot is Awesome and Good for those Who Love Mexican Food.
Friends getting together for brunch, we each had a wonderful dish and if I could spell I would list them. The staff was very courteous. We would reccomend this restaurant.
Smaller venue. Great food. Casual/slower service, but worth it if you arent in a hurry.
We came for restaurant week and had a great experience! We appreciated the pace of the meal- we were in a relaxed mood and really taking our time but the courses came out at appropriate times- no rushing through. I had a margarita flight which was awesome. Loved our date night!
The flavors and spices in the tacos and appetizers were superb, especially the cucumbers. I can't believe how good simple cucumbers can be. Loved the Pequeno Bowl too.
We were seated about 30 minutes after our reservation time. We ordered chips and salsa as an appetizer, but our food came out first. We didn't eat much of the chips and salsa but still had to pay for it. Overall it was an expensive dinner for not that great of service.
We decided to give Barrio Star one more try. The first time we ate there it was so delicious and the service was great - this was a couple of years ago. After that we had been back a couple more times with the last time having a horrrendous meal/service. I purchased a groupon and thought ok one more time. We were very happy - the service was great - the margarita flight was so yummy. My husband had the 3 taco plate and I had the pollo diablo. Both were great. It wasn't crowded so we think they've lost most of their clientele - but we will definitely be back hoping the meal/service stays spot on!
Had a 9.15 reservation and got in just before the kitchen closed at 9.30
They were out of some dishes and the rice cold. Taco's were great
Our server was absolutely outstanding AND we found out it was her birthday at the end of the night. She gave us great recommendations of chile relleno for my boyfriend and I got the taco plate with the salmon, steak and spicy chicken options. We loved both and she was so kind! I wish I could remember her name... but her birthday is August 30! :)
Tried this on a whim because Open Table offered it up as a suggestion. Overall, it was pretty great. A couple little quirks keep it from a five-star experience (i.e. Undercooked rice in the side dish and an uninspiring tortilla soup), but everything else was great. Chips and salsa were just different enough from traditional to be notable. My husband had a carnitas torta and I had fish tacos, both of which were excellent. And even with undercooked rice, the flavor on the rice and beans side dish was great. The blood orange margarita was yummy. Service was spot on.
Grabbing a bite with out of town friends. The food and drinks were excellent as always. Great time socializing and catching up.
Barrio Star has become our new favorite neighborhood restaurant. Service is excellent. We love being seated in the back room. Food is always delicious and we can have a healthy Mexican dinner!
