I took a good friend to the restaurant and had great expectations as I have been there 5 times before, only to be disappointed by the slow service, and quality of the food went way down.
Everything was thrown on the table at once, and the food was not exceptional like before.
I guess the honeymoon is over!
Service was very slow and we had to ask for everything, including refills of water. Sat between 2 EXTREMELY loud tables and asked to move outside. Waited several minutes before anyone even attempted to clean off the 1 open table on the patio, so we cleaned it ourselves, just in time for all of the entrees and sides to arrive at the same time. The baby back ribs were dry and the pulled pork was like mush. It was a birthday celebration and I did not want to embarrass my friend on his birthday by making a scene with the restaurant manager, so we did not complain that evening. Overall, the check was $165 for the 2 of us since we sampled a few dishes. Way overpriced for what it was for the portions and quality of food / service. Probably will not be returning to this restaurant.
The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The bbq chicken was flavorful and moist and all of the sides were delicious - especially the kale salad and the macaroni & cheese. Great cocktails; especially if you like whiskey and bourbon. Really inventive and tasty.
Sitting outside is just kind of awful because trucks are constantly lumbering by on Ventura. Plus there were flies and a crying baby. None of that is really the restaurant’s fault. We went for brunch and unfortunately there was nothing for the vegetarian to eat. Again, we probably shouldn’t have picked a bbq place with a vegetarian in the group.
The first time we ate here, we loved it. There are a few things on the menu which are special, like the "ho cake". Otherwise, the BBQ just simply doesn't hold up to all the great joints that we have all around the city. The salads are plain and not creative. And, there are not enough selections to choose from. I had a Cheese burger which with a patty that was as thin as a McDonalds patty, and was dry and only tasted like smoke. I simply would avoid this place.
this was my first time coming in here. Overall I give it four stars. Joe the bartender was my server and maybe feel right at home. He's doing his side work and getting ready for the lunch rush but also took the time to have a conversation with me I may great recommendations.
What an overpriced waste of time. $17.00 for 8 ozs of meat and nothing else? How hard is it to make a decent brisket? No flavor, tough (meaning not cooked slow or long enough), and a completely uninspired (and misspelled-on-the-menu) brussels sprouts. It's enough to make you hate brussels sprouts even if you liked them to begin with.
Impossible to find parking on Ventura (and not interested in paying overpriced valet service for a BBQ dinner). And they charge you for THEIR waitstaff's health insurance. (I know it's the "in" thing to do now.
The server, however was a lot of fun and very efficient.
The food was really good! We had made reservations, so no wait at all. We were on vacation from Seattle and had heard of the place from Youtubes Worth it? It was 80% worth it. A little pricey, but the best meal we had on the vacation. Our waiter was very nice and all staff was friendly. A group would be fun to go with to be able to try more things on the menu. Brisket was AMAZING! Oh and I do not eat wings at all, I think they are a waste of time. Their wings are DELISH!!
I love this place and like to take out of town guest there for a casual meal or brunch. I was however disappointed this time when I was told there was no ribs or brisket available. Can you imagine not having that when that is your prime attraction. We did find alternatives but my guests were disappointed.
Some of the best BBQ I've had in a while. Ribs fell right off the bone, brisket melts in your mouth, and the Hoe Cake was basically a corn bread pancake on steroids. Amazing food. Only disappointing part was the service. The person who controlled the food and where it went was hilarious and seemed like a genuine guy. Server only came by: To introduce, get order, give napkins, and give check. No refills on the water and no checking up.
I won't let that take away from the food though. The food and friendliness of the staff stood above the shoddy server.
I recommend the Baby Back Ribs(Full plate, just do it), Rib tips and Hoe Cake.
Outstanding restaurant. Service was superb: fast, friendly, helpful, easy. Food was excellent. Brisket was tender and moist, with just the right fat cap for flavor and texture perfection. Love that there was ONE barbecue sauce: it was outstanding. Cornbread had good balance, if just a tad on the sweet side (slightly less appealing to a southern taste). Hoecake: delicious, unique spoonbread consistency with a rich sweetness. Collards: juicy, and delicious use of bacon garnish. Baked beans: could not be better, with a nice vinegar kick. Chicken: an only disappointment (on the dry side), but flavorful. Potato salad: unbelievably good, with fresh dill, not much mayo and great skin-on large chunk potatoes, topped with fantastic pickled onions. The house made pickle slices: perfection, thin, crunchy, great taste. Please open a second restaurant in Santa Barbara, so we don't have to drive this far.
Okay so this place has good barbecue. We tried the baby back ribs, the hoe cake, brisket and macncheese. The ribs were delicious. Succulent and sweet with a slight tang. The macncheese was too heavy for my friends tastes but I enjoyed it for it's rich cheesy goodness. The brisket was the highlight for me. It's not Texas level but it's good enough. We had hoe cake for dessert and that was drenched in butter and salt. So if you're into that sort of thing go for it.
Portions are okay. Service was great. On the pricier side of what I'm used to so be prepared to spend upwards of $50 or more for 2 people.
I love open table because I'm always able to find great restaurants and this one is no exception I also heard about it on diners drive-ins and dives I have wanted to come here for a couple of years and I've gone out of my way to make it and I'm so glad I did The waiter said everything on the menu was great he couldn't tell us what to get and boy was he right I had the spareribs and brisket and my husband have the sausage links We also got the beans The coast Laura and the hoe cake. I have never had a better barbecue anywhere and I eat barbecue everywhere All the sides were delicious I can't wait to go back to this restaurant and try other things
I had been to this restaurant several times before and had always had a good experience. We made a reservation for 6 people for dinner and actually got a confirmation phone call in the morning but about an hour and fifteen minutes before our reservation we got a call that the restaurant didn't have any ribs as they had a heavy weekend. First of all, I can't understand why they wouldn't have told me in the morning about the ribs rather than wait until it was too late. Our friends were coming from all over the city so we couldn't do much about changing venues an hour ahead of time. Secondly, our dinner was on a Wednesday, so the weekend excuse seemed pretty weak.
The restaurant was pretty empty understandably but the service was painfully absent and the food very mediocre. So sad, as we really did like this restaurant.
The first two times I went to the place, it was wonderful. Not so this time. The rib tips were awful, as were a couple of other sides. Our server - who was great, albeit overburdened with tables - took the offending dishes off the tab. The brisket was overlooked to the point of being mush. The tri-tip was good. The beans were inedible and undercooked.
It was not worth the trip or price.
