Barrel and Ashes riffs on the classical pairing of bourbon and barbecue, featuring picnic style seating on the front patio, and communal and traditional seating inside.
Guests can enjoy chef driven traditional American BBQ at Barrel & Ashes seven days a week. The restaurant’s bar program includes a tap driven program with specialty cocktails, cold brew, teas and an eclectic list of local beers, all on tap. The restaurant occupies the former Spark Woodfire Grill space and has been stripped back to its original 1940’s structure and creatively designed to bring family style southern hospitality to Studio City.

Good food, tasty cocktails. Cool vibe but it had sports games on, so it was a mixed ambiance. The food and drinks (and prices) seemed to convey a higher end dining experience, but it also had a casual atmosphere of a bbq place/sports bar. I didnt mind the mix. Quarter-pound portions of meat are small- get at least the half pound if you’re hungry. The hoe cake was fine, but the green beans almondine and Tri-til were delicious!
I had 3 drinks- old fashioned was the best. Their bourbon prices are too high though.
Disappointed compared to our previous experience. Pulled pork undercooked and green beans very salty. Waitress informed us they were under new management. That could explain the difference in service and food quality. Undecided if we will return. Pig in barrel absent from their new shirts.
Great food. Always order a full rack of ribs, they fall right off the bone! Found off buzzfeed and was not disappointed.
Ribs - Amazing.
Brisket - So so. Needs sauce.
Mac and Cheese - Nope don't do it.
Fried Pickles - Amazing.
Hoe Cake - If you love corn bread, buy this.
Fries - Overpriced but good.
Cheese Curds - Also fantastic.
We were excited to bring 2 of our friends that we’d told about Barrel & Ashes a million times. Nick or server was SUPER nice. We felt so bad for him- we ordered bottomless mimosas, he informed us the restaurant only had 2 1/2 bottles of champagne and we couldn’t do bottomless. Then we ordered an appetizer of rib tips, they were out of that. Then someone ordered the pork belly & they were out of that. It was almost laughable.
We took it in stride- everything B&A makes is great and seriously NICK was so nice we knew it wasn’t his fault. You could see the pained look on his face.
The food we did order was amazing as always.
Nick was an awesome server.
We had a great date-night @ Barrel & Ashes. We were in the neighborhood and saw them as an option to get a table now. We really enjoyed the experience. Everyone we dealt with, the hostess, the waitress as well as the people bringing us our food and drinks were all wonderful. There were terrific drink options and the food was really good!
I would highly recommend Barrel & Ashes.
Food is down home southern bbq with an updated twist . Good food for the most part (see further).
Service at lunch hour Left Much to be desired — our drinks came after the meal was almost finished, and our waiter never followed up to see how we were doing.
Re food, one caveat: of the members of our party ordered the brisket, (which served in slices)was overdone and the fattiest piece of meat I’ve seen outside of cheap prime rib.
NB: this is one of a growing trend of L.A restaurants that adds a service fee to supplement employees health insurance. As a small business owner in the service industry, I find this distasteful . If you can’t afford to pay for your employee health insurance with the healthy prices you charge — then get out of the business — or Pay for mine — since no one is paying me to defray my cost of employee health care.
I took a good friend to the restaurant and had great expectations as I have been there 5 times before, only to be disappointed by the slow service, and quality of the food went way down.
Everything was thrown on the table at once, and the food was not exceptional like before.
I guess the honeymoon is over!
Service was very slow and we had to ask for everything, including refills of water. Sat between 2 EXTREMELY loud tables and asked to move outside. Waited several minutes before anyone even attempted to clean off the 1 open table on the patio, so we cleaned it ourselves, just in time for all of the entrees and sides to arrive at the same time. The baby back ribs were dry and the pulled pork was like mush. It was a birthday celebration and I did not want to embarrass my friend on his birthday by making a scene with the restaurant manager, so we did not complain that evening. Overall, the check was $165 for the 2 of us since we sampled a few dishes. Way overpriced for what it was for the portions and quality of food / service. Probably will not be returning to this restaurant.
The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The bbq chicken was flavorful and moist and all of the sides were delicious - especially the kale salad and the macaroni & cheese. Great cocktails; especially if you like whiskey and bourbon. Really inventive and tasty.
Sitting outside is just kind of awful because trucks are constantly lumbering by on Ventura. Plus there were flies and a crying baby. None of that is really the restaurant’s fault. We went for brunch and unfortunately there was nothing for the vegetarian to eat. Again, we probably shouldn’t have picked a bbq place with a vegetarian in the group.
The first time we ate here, we loved it. There are a few things on the menu which are special, like the "ho cake". Otherwise, the BBQ just simply doesn't hold up to all the great joints that we have all around the city. The salads are plain and not creative. And, there are not enough selections to choose from. I had a Cheese burger which with a patty that was as thin as a McDonalds patty, and was dry and only tasted like smoke. I simply would avoid this place.
this was my first time coming in here. Overall I give it four stars. Joe the bartender was my server and maybe feel right at home. He's doing his side work and getting ready for the lunch rush but also took the time to have a conversation with me I may great recommendations.
What an overpriced waste of time. $17.00 for 8 ozs of meat and nothing else? How hard is it to make a decent brisket? No flavor, tough (meaning not cooked slow or long enough), and a completely uninspired (and misspelled-on-the-menu) brussels sprouts. It's enough to make you hate brussels sprouts even if you liked them to begin with.
Impossible to find parking on Ventura (and not interested in paying overpriced valet service for a BBQ dinner). And they charge you for THEIR waitstaff's health insurance. (I know it's the "in" thing to do now.
The server, however was a lot of fun and very efficient.
