Unique menu. Food was very good. Wait staff was wonderfully attentive.
Chef does an amazing job incorporating the house made spirits into the menu. Enjoyed every taste
Everything was wonderful. Thank you for a lovely dinner.
We like the ambiance, great service and sophisticated menu but found the choices a little limited and obscure.
The trees major had a cherry Demi glaze that we did not like although the meat was very tender and well cooked.
The roasted red pepper soup was delicious!
Food was cold and served at different times for 4 people. Steak was raw. Veggies cane 10 minutes after steak was delivered. Manager was useless. Save your money
Food and service awesome ! V ery different and upscale menu- not what I expected at all !
Very pleasant ambiance and sophisticated plates. The Otto's beers are also quite good.
We did the Sunday dinner buffet, great food....great service and pleasant atmosphere.
I love the food and the service at Barrel 21. The noise level, however, is terrible. Their other restaurant, Otto's, has the same problem. I frequently leave both restaurants with a happy belly but a headache. My young daughter feels the same way. We would love to eat there more often, but just can't handle the noise, even when there aren't that many people there. I wish they would add some noise reducing features to make it a more pleasant experience!
I have already emailed my complaints about Sat, Mar 23.
The food had a good taste. The menu was small and didn't have much selection. Nearly everything had mushrooms, which limited it even more for me. The tables were too small and I didn't like the setup, there was very little privacy as all of the tables were right next to each other in a large room. Not a nice setup for people who like a little privacy. Overall, though the food had a good flavor, I would not recommend Barrel 21, it's just not worth the price.
For being marketed as a distillery there was no real indication that it was such other than the name. The menu had no indication of what the on site distilled drinks were and was more of a mixed drink styled establishment. The menu also caters to more specific and refined crowd. While the meal we ordered (a special not on the menu) was good the rest of the menu left much to be desired.
Exceptionally good value for money brunch at $20/head, buffet. Couldn't move after.
As always, the food was exceptional. We were accompanied by friends who had never been there before and they loved it. Can’t wait to go back.
Food was good (it was disappointing that they were out of my first 3 menu choices - just wish they had told us upfront which items weren’t available), but our service was mediocre. The server for the adjacent tables was really good, though, and we wish she had been our server! We will probably give them another chance and hope they have the menu items we want, and that we get a better server!
Not really impressed. It’s pricey, and I didn’t see anything that I was particularly drawn too. It advertised “Happy Hour” but you could only ordered the drinks the restaurant chose. I will not be back. Had I not had a gift card and my friend wasn’t in the band, I would not have been there.
Yes I would. I do think the food is a little pricey but it is very good and I like the atmosphere.
The food was good. The service was good. The music was really good. Nice place to be. BUT, the music was TOO LOUD. When you go with friends to a classy place like Barrel 21 is supposed to be, you expect to be able to talk to those friends. With the "bright" acoustics of Barrel 21 (lots of glass, hard floors and walls, metal ductwork and NO sound absorption), conversation is going to be difficult in any case. When you then set the loudspeaker levels too high, conversation becomes impossible, even if the music is good (and it was). We left early, just so we could talk for a few minutes outside in the cold. Turn the sound level down, install some acoustic absorption materials, and people will really want to come.
Barrel 21 is one of the best Sunday brunch options in town. The drinks are good; the food is excellent with both breakfast and dinner options and the price is reasonable. Can't ask for more than that!
We've only ever been to Barrel 21 for their Sunday brunch but is was fantastic as always.
Our waitress was very nice and honest about the food selections we were trying to make.
This was our first time at Barrell 21, but certainly not our last. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal which gave us a chance to try some food preparations. Not your everyday eating experience.
A slight snafu with one meal, quickly corrected by waiter as well as management. Otherwise our meals were delicious.
Our waiter, Brad, was quite knowledgeable. Helped us decide what to order. He was attentive and there when we needed him. Helpful hints about drinks and meals.
Three of us ordered different cocktails and each was very good.
Management made sure the remainder of or dinner was what we wanted and expected. We appreciate that kind of service.
Went on valentine’s day. The food was great, BUT the regular menu was swapped for a gimmicky five course valentines day thing that seriously limited food options and felt like a money grab. It was nice that there was the option of ordering off the bar food menu, but that was also fairly limited as well and I would rather have been able to order off the full menu. Having a holiday menu is cool, but having to order from it exclusively was surprising.
It’s definitely one of the best high-end restaurants at State College. The decoration is great though a little bit dark in general. We came to Barrel 21 at the valentine’s day, and the special 5 courses meal was $75 per person. The test was good, as I rated 4/5, but I would say it’s a little bit over priced. $200 for this dinner, including alcohol, tips and tax, was more expensive than it worth. But, after all, living in a small town like State College doesn’t leave us many choices, and Barrel 21 would be one of my best choice for special occasions.
Service was fantastic and food and drinks were outstanding!
Arrived early and took a seat at the bar. Conversations with bartenders were great. They educated us on their drinks as well as their house made spirits. Watched them make a “smoked” drink and then tasted the end product. Wow. Our meals were very good. We ordered several apps versus meals-not disappointed at all. Staff were attentive but left us be in between checking on us.
Our only complaint is that they began sweeping a section of the dining room in order to move some tables. Kind of yucky seeing what had been left on the floor from the past cleaning.
Service was EXTREMELY slow. We waited over an hour for our meals. We were there at 7pm, and when we ordered, many entrees on the menu were already sold out. I tried to get the seafood of the day, but since it was sold out I picked the grilled vegetable salad. What a waste! It was pretty much a bag of mixed greens with a few pieces of grilled vegetables on top. Ridiculous for $20.
Ken Volz was great!! Needs baffles to control noise level
Delicious osso bucco. The barrel old fashioned is a winner, too! And the duck wings.
I really enjoy Barrel’s happy hour and recently tried their brunch for the first time and was so happy with it. Everyone was so pleasant. The food and drinks were delicious!
Food excellent, good service. Seems expensive given central PA. VERY loud.
The menu on open table is not the same as what is in the restaurant. It was disappointing to not be able to get what was on the open table menu.
The menu is great but the food took a long time to be served >30 minutes and was lukewarm when it arrived
Great menus, service and follow-up. Nicely designed dining areas and restrooms.
Odd menu items seems out of place in a college town.
My wife and I met with two other couples for dinner. The happy hour is the best around and the drinks superb. We had parmesan fries which were very good. My wife and I ordered OLD FASHIONED MARINATED TERES MAJOR dinner menu item. She had medium rare/I ordered medium. Both were very fatty and my wife disliked the sauce. I thought the sauce was fine, but the meat was too chewy. The dessert (Mascarpone Cheesecake) we had was absolutely delicious.
The ambiance is wonderful with a very upscale but relaxed feel. Well done. Our server did well.
This was our first time at Barrel 21, will certainly return. Food was excellent and service also great.
Perfect variety of food for brunch- not too few options but not overwhelming. Food was delicious. The Nutella French toast and the grits were excellent. The wait staff was super friendly and accommodating.
