I went to Barley Mac with my boyfriend for our anniversary. We had Hector as our server and he was awesome! Super attentive and friendly. The food was amazing and came out so quick! It was nice and quiet and everyone that worked there was extremely nice. Loved it and would recommend to anyone!
We've been looking for a good place for Sunday brunch and Barley Mac is great for a wonderful and not over the top expensive brunch. It's an upscale neighborhood place. $3 Mimosas!! We'll return.
Great food and service! The atmosphere was pleasent and the restaurant was clean. Will come back!
Place was nice, good place to meet colleagues. My meal was kind of bland though. That was a surprise.
Wanted to like the restaurant. A few glimpses why not...
1. Waiter stood talking with another colleague about non work issues (within earshot) while holding our drink order. Drinks were already slow.
2. Six dirty plates and glasses remained on the table while the waiter ignored them. We finally asked another waiter to take care of them.
3. One appetizer that was highly recommended was greasy and not fully cooked.
4. Main courses were fine.
1 entree forgotten. Came 1/2 hour late. Foreign body found in Crab Cake. Reordered drinks did not arrive.
Manager did comp meals.
Picked this restaurant because of the good ratings; however, I wasn't too impressed with our visit; I ordered a hamburger medium rare, and it was under cooked; my friend ordered a mock-tail (without alcohol) and they put alcohol in it. When the bill came, they charged for the alcohol and then argued about taking it off the receipt. On the positive side, the brussel sprouts were good. I can't give a high rating for the food because of the inconsistency of the overall meal. The service was not good given the lack of detail and lack of customer service. Given its overall rating however, I will most likely not go back.
Yes, the food and atmosphere is great. We just had a nervous new waiter and he was not as attentive as maybe he should have been. A little slower service than normal.
The food was good, a bit pricey but good. But the waitstaff were so incredibly unprofessional. There was no hostess to seat us, which would have been fine had it been handled properly, which it wasn't. We had an early reservation, so seating us should have been handled easily and professionally. Two or three different people approached us, but it still seemed clumsy. Then our waitress, although she really tried hard, was barely audible, and was obviously not trained properly. But add to that that all the other staff were congregating around where I guess the food came out talking, slouching, playing rock, paper scissors. I've never seen anything like it. Clearly there wasn't anyone in charge.
We came here with another couple this week. The cocktails (I tried both the Boulevardier -- which reminded me of a sweeter old fashioned -- and the Old Fashioned) are great. We also had the Mac and Cheese and Croquettes which were also very good.
The Croquettes are a must - they are balls of sweet dough (think donut holes but not as sweet, and a little harder) with parmesan cheese on top that wade in a sweet sauce. Accompanying the Croquettes are small slabs of melted cheese and a type of pork that reminded me of mortadella. We were instructed, and subsequently rewarded, to cut the Croquettes in half and make a sort of slider with the melted provolone and pork. It was amazing.
The server was very attentive and friendly. Will definitely come back.
Great brunch items
Damn the food was good and price was relatively cheap (spoken as a New Yorker). Definitely have the truffle Mac & Cheese.
We ended up staying for over 3 1/2 hours. I know that is a long time, but there were plenty of tables available. The server stopped refilling coffee or water after about two hours. I left a very generous tip even so.
Barley Mac was really tasty and had great ambiance. The staff was friendly and there is a good variety of options on the menu. The waiters were knowledgeable about the menu and everything came out pretty quickly!
I don’t often leave negative reviews, but my fired chicken sandwich was really unfortunate. Rock hard and tasteless other than the oil. The fries were also limp and flavorless. Patio seating is the only redeeming quality here.
The wait staff was friendly, the food was good & everything was delivered on a reasonable timeline!
The food was tasty, however, my mac & cheese was cold (or at best lukewarm), as was my Mexican Street Corn. My colleague ordered the truffle fries and they were also cold. If the food had been warm/hot, I would have increased my rating greatly.
As for value, I am visiting the area so can't compare very well to other restaurants in the area, but I thought $12 for 2 small street corn cobs was pretty pricey.
Enjoyed our brunch at Barley Mac - really delish crab cake benedict - and I was very happy they were able to hard cook my eggs as I like them. Only negative was my 2nd cup of coffee tasted really strange/very watery so I didn't drink it -but I didn't have to pay for it either so that was appropriate. I also love their octopus dish at dinner and they have really tasty fish tacos and great pizza.
Great meal and service!
Service was great, and the restaurant is clean and inviting. The value for what you get doesn't seem quite there, however. I had the french dip sandwich and while tasty, it should be half the price due to the overall size and amount of meat included. Lots of places overcharge for sandwiches so it's not too out of the ordinary unfortunately but it's enough that I won't be coming back for lunch. I would come back for dinner, though
Took a couple new hires to the restaurant on a Monday, and while the food was good, the service was a bit slow. Not to the fault of our server who was excellent, but the lack of staff that was staffed that day slowed our service.
It was a lovely day to have brunch outside. The food was excellent. The service was very slow, and the waiter failed to turn in one of our meals so we were finished before our friend. It was also difficult to get refills on drinks and water. The inside of the establishment was not busy so it seems strange to me that of the 5 tables outside that we had such an issue. You never know if it is the waiter or the kitchen. The food, I will have to say, swayed my vote.
My husband and I shared for small plates. They were all wonderful.
We love Barley Mac. Consistently delicious food with a menu that they update thoughtfully, and the servers are best in class. Easy going but very professional, they connect with their diners, and they provide excellent service. We love bringing friends and family from out of town to BMac, as we lovingly call it. I also love how kid-friendly and dog-friendly they are!! I highly recommend this restaurant, and we will always keep Barley Mac on our circuit of restaurants we frequent. A+!
Food was very bland. Service was ok. Wouldn’t recommend for brunch.
Noisy at times, but great metro accessible location.
Chicken was bad, very dry and flavorless
A bit pricey for what you get, and too many bacon forward dishes, but overall not bad at all. Nice sized portions and a very large outdoor section made for a very pleasant evening.
Menu is all over the place. Inside was too loud - clearly challenging even for the staff. Short ribs were generous, juicy and tasty. Tomatoes in Caprese salad could have been riper. Rice in poke bowl seemed to have been pre formed.
Entertained my grown nephew here and we agreed that the next time he visited we would come back. The food was great, the noise (at lunch) was fine, we had bourbon, our waiter was great, I don't know what might have been better. (I had the Barley Burger and he had the Au Jus)
Service was fast, food was good
Attentive staff, nice decor, quality food, and easy access from the metro. We had the calamari as an appetizer and fig and prosciutto pizza for our main and both were good. The fig pizza nicely balanced the sweet of the fig with the salt of the prosciutto and the tart of the balsamic.
Average food at average place. Nothing stood out good or bad.
I enjoyed their happy hour with a couple of friends. It's a terrific deal and the service was excellent. This was my first time sitting outside at Barley Mac. Typically we have a full dinner inside and, though the dinner selection is first rate, it's typically very noisy. It's a totally different feel outside and I really enjoyed that. Also, I've always found the staff at their host stand to be first rate, whether in person or over the phone.
Sent back onion soup: tepid, flavorless broth with no onions. Fried calamari and grilled octopus were over-salted. Fried brussel sprouts were overcooked, dry. Someone in kitchen does not know what s/he is doing. Service was fine.
Our server, Derek, was terrific. Loved his recommendations! Also appreciated his patience.
Food was great. Only dispointment was a few whiskey choices and food choices weren't available but is was a big list and they went above and beyond to accommodate us. A+
Brunch was delicious and worth the price.
Very nice ambience. Food and service was very good. Large drink selection.
We had an awesome waitress who made our wait time for the food bearable. We had the calamari which was great . I had the pappardelle which was fresh but the ragu consisted mostly of red onions instead of meat. It was the closest restaurant to where we were staying , and the food was good. It just wasn’t great — and the wait time for the food was way too long , even though it was July 4th.
