About Barking Mad Cafe
We told people we offer super premium coffee and scratch-baked sweets and savories in north Gaithersburg, and they assumed we were crazy. We told them we cook in a wood hearth, and they said we were batty. We paired food with specialty cocktails and house infusions, and they thought we were nuts. We revealed the on-site aeroponic, organic garden where we grow vegetables, herbs and edible flowers, and they whispered we were mad as a hatter. And as the lights sparkled above a 100+ seat outdoor patio, they declared us Barking Mad.

Barking Mad Cafe Ratings and Reviews
We had a reservation for a large party (12 people). We asked for happy hour menus at our table and were provided but after receiving the menu, we were told that we could only receive the happy hour prices at the bar. Our service was slow but tolerable. Some of the food was good while the rest was less than ordinary. The taco salad and fig pizza was enjoyed by the guests in our party but the Caesar salad and the fish tacos were less that satisfactory. The highlight of the evening was a guest at our table ordering a sausage pizza but only had 4 small pieces of sausage on the pizza. When we brought it to the attention of the server, she told us that she would check with the kitchen. The server told us that the kitchen ran out of sausage but instead of asking her if she would like something else, they simply brought out her pizza without telling her it only had some of the ingredients. We can only assume they were hoping that she did not notice. Unfortunately this was not the only person this happened to at our table. Another guest ordered the Charcuterie Board only to receive the meats. The kitchen did not prepare the cheese or olives - we had to ask for those items. While we understand that things happen, the restaurant showed a lack of concern for the customers.
When we arrived we were told they were busier than expected. The outside patio was packed, it was wonderful weather and there was a live performance. The inside was completely empty. Our food took so long that even our waiter was shocked. When I received my plate the food was put together haphazardly, I was told they had fallen behind so I guess that means just throw it on a plate and get it out there. I might go back to sit outside on a nice night but would probably stick to pizza, I had the tacos, all the pizzas around me looked amazing.
Decided to give it a try. First the good... well decorated and warm environment. Although it was a little more than half full it was easy to have a quiet conversation. Server was attentive and really tried to make up for the shortcomings of the food. Now the downside; my first menu choice was not available because they did not have the pasta noodles it was paired with. Really, did not have pasta... inexcusable. So I settled on a shrimp dish which was really quite good. But it literally came with four pieces of shrimp. This was an entree dish... but then it got worse, my wife ordered fish tacos. The fish were essentially "fish sticks" on soft taco shells. That is wrong in so many ways. So disappointed that this didn't work out but they need to get ownership/management in there who understand the restaurant business... when they do, we will give it a second try.
Went for Sunday brunch and had the crab eggs benedict. It was delicious and a bargain at $15 for two crab cakes.
We had problems with service, but I think it was because our server had been pulled to work a table with a large party and they did not assign someone else to our table. The people that did wait on us were very friendly and apologetic for our having to wait.
We are absolutely delighted to have found this restaurant! The food was terrific, as was the service. Everything we ordered was a real hit. We sat outside and watched kids play in the fountain, which was great as it wasn't too hot. We will definitely be back.
We have loved Barking Mad, and ho at least twice a month, but the last two times have been disappointing. We went Sunday for Father's Day. We arrived at 12:30 and were seated promptly, but didn't receive any service for over half an hour. Four other tables were helped, and they were all seated way after us. We moved tables and still received no service until my husband got up and asked why we aren't being helped at all. Then my drink was out, even though we asked prior to making order because I ordered my dish around drink, then my order was wrong. We had planned a movie we had already bought tickets for at 2:15 and ended up being a half hour late for our movie. The waitress was amazing and apologized numerous times, and said due to it being Father's Day they were slammed, but we have been there when it was a lot busier and never received the bad service we did this time. Also, everyone around us was helped and received their orders quickly so we don't understand why we had the experience we did. Again, this is the second time we have had the same experience pretty much. We don't get to go out much due to me having a chronic illness, so when we do, it's a big deal and Barking Mad had become our first choice for dates, but we will be looking for other places after this time.
This place was adorable. Great food (eggs Benedict and frittata to die for) and adorable decor and ambiance. Apollo was the best server we could've asked for. Knew the menu great, was attentive and fun, and even found out random info my mom and I wanted that was completely unrelated. He's the best and we will keep coming back for him and the great brunch. Thanks everyone!
Really good food and drinks! Our server was running around and seemed to be handling multiple tables and the bar. it took awhile for us to get our drinks, but they were really good. Food came out hot and was very good. it seemed like they might have been shorthanded, and there were tables around us who complained that their food was not done to their order/liking, but again ours was great. I would definitely return. (one other small note, we received the wrong bill. it was corrected quickly and I was given copies of the refund and correct bill).
Loved the outdoor patio, decor, and food was delicious and great value for money. Kid friendly, had really nice high chairs. It seemed the restaurant may have been understaffed as seating and service took longer than expected for a number of things. However the server herself was lovely. We'll be back for brunch again.
Barking Mad has some interesting items on the menu and a good list of signature cocktails and beers. My wife loved her fig and pancetta pizza. I ordered the burger and it was completely overcooked, didn't;t feel like sending it back to ruin the mood...other than that the outdoor dining was nice and there was an acoustic dup laying that made the evening nice!
We had a party of 11. I'd had a reservation at GrillMarx in Olney for 8, then had to add three more. I called, they took their time finding out if they could make the change, finally told me no and there were no apologies. Wow! Then I find Barking Mad Cafe, and am I glad I did! Wow, they had a table for 11 all set up. It was a difficult group, my elderly mother and five teenage to young adult boys who were all LOUD. But the waiter was SO nice and accommodating and made my mother feel special. We were there for brunch, and even though the place closed at 2:30 to reset for later, no one even tried to ask us to depart. We were all having such a good time talking and catching up. And the bill was SO reasonable. And the food? OMG, I had the white pizza, and slices went to my son and a brother and were gobbled up immediately. My other brother had the salmon pizza; also delish. Everyone was very happy with the food. We will DEFINITELY be returning!
