The food here was ok, but with so many dining options in the city, I would look for a more interesting choice. My wife said her ribs were tender and good, and my bacon wrapped meatloaf was above average, but the person who ordered shrimp and grits wasn't happy with the size of the "so-called" tiger shrimp. And our other diner thought the mushroom flatbread could have had more mushrooms.
I had to make a very last minute reservation for my mom's birthday after her friend had to cancel on her due to an emergency. We live 30 minutes away from each other so this was a good halfway point for us both. She used to live in Oak Park / River Forest, so she knew that this would be a good place to go and I took her word for it.
She wasn't wrong - the staff was incredibly attentive to the fact that it was my mom's birthday (and that the time spent would be important to us both). We were greeted with a "Happy Birthday" and my mom was impressed that she was greeted that way (a "win" for me!).
Our waitress was the sweetest - she was attentive to our needs and made sure our food came out in a staggered way so that I could spend as much time as possible with my mom before driving back home. She did not rush us and allowed us to catch up and spend time together - I really appreciate that.
The food was really great - we each got a salad and tried the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. Everything was satisfying and the portions were manageable.
I haven't been to Oak Park's downtown since I was a kid and now that I live downtown, I will definitely make the trip to Barclay's now that I know how great it is!
The restaurant is a gem. But unfortunately, the parking situation in the area is horrible. We spent a lot of time driving around trying to find a spot. And the friends we met at the restaurant - one came in while the other was still driving around trying to find a spot. Then the waitress told us that you could park in The Carlton parking lot. Might be a good idea to let folks no this on the website. My
concern is this restaurant might close because people will avoid the parking situation. But a parking lot opens up the dining experience.
This is one of Oak Park's hidden gems. The food is constantly fantastic and I don't think I have ever had anything I didn't like. its a quite atmosphere you can actually hear the other person speaking and just plain enjoy the company. They do have a typical bar with TV's and can be a nice quite spot to watch the game so you don't have the obnoxious drunks making it unpleasant. I do recommend a ice cold beer paired with the loaded tater tots. I then would finish it off with a rack of ribs. These ribs would rival any BBQ house out there! The best think to do is to just try it out and make your own decision. I promise you won't be disappointed.
My family and I ate there and were disappointed. The menu sounded good but the execution was subpar. My wife had the prime rib which was okay, but the vegetables (squash and zucchini) were undercooked and tasted bland. My fish dish was fine. My daughter got the $14 burger on the menu and the shoestring onions she ordered were white and barely cooked. My youngest ordered the kids cheeseburger which makes the McDonald's one look big. We also ordered a side of brussel sprouts with bacon and caramelized onions, but the sprouts were hard and didn't have any caramelization (definitely undercooked). For over $100, it definitely wasn't worth the value and the execution from the chef was not on the details. On the positive, the waitress was very nice. There are too many other better restaurants in Oak Park that are either lesser expensive with better food.
First visit and it was a pleasant one. We arrived shortly after they opened and were seated immediately with pleasant conversation with staff. Wine list is adequate and menu options, while not huge, are interesting. We had two large appetizers and shared a dinner. More than ample for the two of us and we have pretty good appetites. It's a quiet and gracious atmosphere suitable for conversation with no need to rush. We will return.
We went there for Easter Brunch. They never informed me we might be in a room across the lobby with a long walk back and forth to get our food. My mother walks with a cane and gets short of breath. It was hard to carry her food and mine so she could walk. A lot of the food was dry. I enjoyed the goat cheese ravioli and our server was great. The space the food was in was too small and did not have a good flow. I left tired and frustrated.
We had the short ribs with Brussels sprouts and horseradish mashed potatoes and half rack of ribs. My friend enjoyed the ribs; my short ribs were slightly undercooked for my taste. The carmelized Brussels sprouts weren't, but the potatoes were good. Service was attentive.
We live in a neighboring community and love to meet friends at Barclay's. It's a quiet, comfortable spot to converse and catch up and at the same time enjoy really well-prepared food. Good wine and beer lists. Full bar great for specialty drinks. Sit next to the window at street level to watch the downtown Oak Park neighborhood go by. Included side dishes are very well-paired with the main course for you. Interesting sauces and just good food.
Great service and delicious chopped salad (we shared). We used a $50 OpenTable check for a great meal. My dining partner got and loved the Delmonico steak. I was underwhelmed by the sous vide short ribs. They were very good reheated the next day, but at presentation, they were dry and lukewarm. Maybe my expectation was too high. The roasted Brussels sprouts were tasty and could use a bit more caramelization (next day yep). Will return for semi-special occasions. Food is good, friendly and inviting atmosphere.
We dine at this restaurant quite often. We arrived for our dinner and stood at the hostess stand for quite a awhile. (more than 10 minutes). I believe Joe saw us standing there and he looked for the hostess! The place, especially the bar, was very busy! Gene took care of us! Only drawback, was the mashed potatoes were very cold!
We're regulars here. For New Year's Eve, we'd usually choose a more innovative restaurant, but, given a temporary disability and Barclay's convenience and accessibility, we at here. And we're not at all sorry; the prime rib at Barclay's can't be beat, and Patricia is as good a server as you'll ever find.
Hubby and I felt like a night out and had liked this place in the past. A light-handed remodel had brought it up-to-date. Good distance between tables. Despite being busy, quiet table conversation was possible. Food was well-prepared and paired nicely with sides. I had short ribs with horseradish potatoes and caramelized brussels sprouts. Perfect for a snowy evening. Service was perfect. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it every now and then.
