Nice Bohemian style French Bistro. Very accommodating for celiac. Waiter brought gluten free bread with my wife's soup as a surprise. Nice wine list and options by the glass.
A trusted favorite for many years, I never hesitate to pick Barbette for date night or special occasion. The food is consistently good, the pricing fair, and the atmosphere eclectic and friendly. Hands down, Barbette also seems to have the best, most knowledgeable servers in town. Love, love, love this place!
We had a great time and the server was GREAT, I will go back and I will recommend this to friends...
the service was wonderful and the staff was helpful. the wine selection was excellent and the mussels were very tasty. nice place ,will go there again
I always feel like I’m in the West Village in the 80’s when I eat at Barbette’s. A good vibe, great for, and personable waiters.
I am a fan of all the Bartmann restaurants, and have been coming to Barbette for over a decade, so it pains me to say this. I am extremely disappointed with the service we received last night. "House" wine should never be $15 a glass, but that's what I was served - to the tune of $90 total for our party. I wasn't about to ruin our evening by making a stink about it. But I'm also not planning on returning. What a terrible end to an otherwise enjoyable evening. Shame on your staff.
I like the atmosphere and decor - it's colorful and cozy. Service was very friendly and helpful. I was a little annoyed at the small portion of fruit salad for $6 - maybe I expect too much but for that amount of money it should have been a little bit more. It was fresh and tasty, though.
Birthday dinner, loud atmosphere, could only talk to person next to you. Dirty, disgusting bathroom, urinals overflowing, wet floor, paper towel mess. Waiter not knowledgeable and VERY slow with everything. Some food came out cold after waiting a very long time. Some items were a good value, (chicken dinner) others not so much (steak, crab ravioli). I would not come back for dinner. Will stick with happy hour cheese plate and wine!
Overall, a nice restaurant - some dishes (appetizers) were amazing, others were just good (salmon was a little overdone, probably because it was a thinner filet). We will return.
This was my first time visiting Barbette. Everything was great, but I think the service was the best part. Our waiter was knowledgeable, kind, attentive, and fun.
I like the ambience and this place has been a favorite of mine. But this time my wife and I were disappointed with the food. Her squash risotto was over powered with garlic and my frites were soggy and too salty. I will likely returnbut another strike out and I am gone.
Wait staff very professional and knowledgeable. Paid good attention to us yet was not overbearing. Cheese plate excellent. Good Portuguese red wine, very robust, and a good sweet Riesling. Rutabaga with spinach and orange vinaigrette was spectacular. Steak Au poivre, the small cut was excellent but in the case of my companion was over- peppered. Can’t understand why 2 steaks prepared at same time using same method could vary so. Atmosphere lively but no shrieking diners. We could hear each other. I would return any time, and will.
How did it take me this long to try Barbette? It was AWESOME! Food was amazing. Service attentive. Great kitschy decor. Fun vibe. We'll be back! Total neighborhood gem!
Great food and service! We’ll be back soon.
Perfect ambiance, delicious food and classy service. Definitely a place deserving return visits!
Historically, my Barbette experiences have been great. The ambiance is nice, I like the food well enough, and it's a lovely spot for happy hour get-togethers. Unfortunately, my recent visits have been sub-par. They're undeniably busy during weekend brunch - I get it. Service was pleasant and friendly, though waiting 20 minutes for a mimosa and then another 10 to get our orders in doesn't quite win. I've gone several different days for brunch thinking that these things were just a fluke, but it's been consistent. Three stars given because overall it's still a decent place for HH. At least the frites are still tasty, too.
Met my foodie girlfriends and we all were very satisfied!
Great specials and recommendations from our server. Well prepared and presented. A fun and delicious evening.
Fantastic service and food!! Thanks and we will be back!!
the food was very good with lots of flavors. warm olives and chicken liver mousse were very tasty. Steak frites and steak au poivre were good but undercooked. Medium rare should be very red but not purple. Sent it back and they cooked it further.
Had the prix fixe and the roast chicken with cheese grits and sprouts. Cheese plate to start, 2 glasses of nice pinot. Great service, great ambiance. Recommended if you have $100 for date night.
I always pass by and finally made it a point to stop in for brunch. Food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was cozy and fun. The restaurant version of Monica's apartment in Friends. I'm definitely planning to come back and try more dishes.
The service and food was good even great in many ways. Comfortable setting!
The food was good but the tables were Crowded in a huge extremely noisy room.
I don’t recommend it for mature adults wishing to hear one another in conversation.
Unfortunately my salad was subpar but that’s unusual for this restaurant, generally the food is better
Great food and great service. The mussels and the pomme frites are second to none in town.
Awesome. We had a birthday celebration here. Great food, staff. Local place and super location. We had a great time. I'd go back for business or fun.
One of our favorite spots. Excellent food and outstanding service!
Barbette is probably the most maddeningly inconsistent of the better-tier of restaurants we frequent a lot. Over the 18 years it has been open the food has never been less than decent, but sometimes for months on end, has been just outstanding. So we get excited, go more, and then get disappointed when it changes again. Lately, it's in a down-cycle and that is too bad. They've made a special out of risottos for several years, and when good, have been absolutely outstanding. The other night was the nadir of the current cycle, we hope - we sent one back and almost sent the other and would have except the bay scallops were tasty. No excuse for this, and our server knew it and was most apologetic.
So, at the moment, we love the place but it's best to stick to charcuterie, mussels, salad and steaks. The chicken entree suffers the same inconsistency as the risottos. Clearly, the kitchen needs a stronger hand overseeing the line cooks. And last, this place has always had one of the more interesting and reasonably-priced wine lists so unlike at many of our other regular spots, we don't bring our own and pay the corkage. Not so much now. Only one red at 30 or less...too bad. There are dozens and dozens of superb wines restaurants can buy from distributors at 10-15 dollars and still make a 100% profit while the diner keeps a reasonable tab. Neighborhood spots should have a large selection at or under 30 dollars and still make plenty of money. Most don't alas, yet I rarely see all those 50-70 dollar (and up) bottles being drunk! This is true everywhere in town right now. The local places
should check out the wine lists in Portland, Seattle, NY and SF....high-end fancy places, sure, makes sense to have all this expensive (and vastly overpriced) stuff. Places where you want to eat weekly? Silly.
So loud my husband couldn’t hear me talk throughout dinner. Asked our waiter what he recommended, he shrugged, thought about it and said that he has had the Burratta and Chicken. (Note that he didn’t “recommend” it. Ordered the Burratta which was strange. I had the chicken, my husband ordered the Salmon. Both underwhelming. Would we recommend (shrugs), nope!
