Barbacco is a modern trattoria that reflects the vibrant city life of San Francisco and offers a casual dining experience that delivers exceptional wines, personable service, and high quality food inspired by recipes from all regions of Italy.
Barbacco looks sleek and urbane, with a welcoming feel. The 66-seat restaurant is fitted with a rich black marble bar for counter seating complimented by a bright yellow beverage case displaying coolers of wine on one side and the building’s original brick walls on the other. The dining tables throughout the restaurant are great for parties of two and up to six. The space is full of energy and infused with a convivial atmosphere where guests come to meet friends or make new acquaintances.
Reservations are welcome, keep in mind that our seating capacity is comprised of counter space and individual tables. We will honor requests for individual tables to the best of our ability.

We were very disappointed. Food wasn’t very special at all. We were expecting way more. We have been dining at some very good spots and this place did not stand out at all. There was nothing to ‘aww’ about. So many better places to spend our money. We are from out of the country and we’re on s foodie vacation.
We've been going to this restaurant since its inception, and it's consistently very good. We enjoy the charcuterie/salumi, the pasta, Polpette/pork meatballs. Our server introduced us to a recent red wine addition to the menu, Torraccia Gattinara (Nebbiolo), of which we thoroughly enjoyed. However, we also ordered a green salad with beets (to share) but it was so small (we each got about 4-5 little leaves) that one of us immediately remarked about it. As a result our server was kind enough to take it off our bill. Overall, a very pleasant experience, and we'll return.
Excellent restaurant when you find yourself in the financial district. Food is excellent but atmosphere is not pretentious. You can be dressed to kill or be casual in jeans in a shirt. Everyone is welcome and everyone looks like they are having a good time. Wine selection is European with a focus on Italian wines from all over the region.
We had a lovely lunch and really enjoyed several dishes. We started with the Burrata and Caponata which was great. Creamy cheese, perfectly grilled bread and flavorful Caponata. Our favorite dish was the spinach rigatoni with lamb ragu. So delicious! The following dishes weren’t as good. The meatballs were tasty but tough , and there was something off with the pork Scallopini. There was an unpleasant bitter undertone. The dessert was remarkably tasty. Butterscotch panna cotta with crispy crumbly toppings and candies kumquats, really good. The service was impeccable. Overall a very enjoyable lunch!
Super popular - packed and beyond loud. Had a 12:30 lunch reservation and at 12:45 was offered seating at the counter. Was told that the possibility of counter seating is in the fine print on Open Table when making a reservation. It's not. We asked to be seated at a table and were asked to wait another 10-15 minutes. Bye-bye. Tadich was able to seat us in minutes. Had a wonderful lunch at a nice table.

The food was very good and the wait staff was amazing. The only problem that I did not like was for a party of 2 you are required to sit at the bar. We had reservations and this was not disclosed at the time of the reservation. I would hesitate to go to this restaurant again if I want an intimate dining experience.
We came to Barbacco for dinner since we wanted some Italian food and were staying in the SOMA/Financial District area. The service was great, but the tables were placed really closely to one another, so it felt like you were eavesdropping on the tables next to you. The food came out surprisingly quickly and overall the dishes were tasty but nothing spectacular. We ordered the pear and endive salad, three pasta dishes (orecchiette, risotto, bolognese), meatballs (polpette) and the fried Brussels sprouts. The pasta was okay - good flavors but nothing out of the ordinary. The meatballs were tasty, and the fried Brussels sprouts were quite good. Overall, would recommend Barbacco as a quick bite if you're in the mood for Italian in the Financial District.
Love barbacco. We sat at the bar and were able to have a nice quiet conversation over some exceptional food. Servings are large so sharing is a great idea and a good way to try more than one plate. If you like salami, try the multi-salami plate apetizer. AMAZING!
My husband and I had a Friday night dinner here. We ate at the counter and had a nice experience. The service was attentive and the waiters knowledgeable of wine and food combos. We had the puréed cauliflower soup and I had the sole special and my husband went for a traditional Italian dish. All were excellent. The only knock was a Roberto Begnini film of Pinocchio was showing — stupid movie. At least it wasn’t Life is Beautiful... stick to Fellini if you must have Italian movies on.
My daughter and I like this restaurant. It's pretty, cosy but not crowded, with better than average noise levels and great food. We meet after work here when we're going to the theatre or shopping, because it builds in a nice walk through beautiful downtown San Francisco to get from shopping and theatre to dining! Petrale of sole dish was excellent, steaks have been great, soup well seasoned and yummy flourless chocolate cake. We sat at the bar and saw some wonderful cheese plates go by as well. In the past, we have enjoyed fresh and nicely created salads with great dressing. The chef should hold back on the vinegar dressing for the crispy brussel sprouts however. They were cooked perfectly, nice and crispy but the vinegar kind of ruined them. Service is sooo friendly!
The server was terrific. The hostess, however, needs guidance. Short, heavyset woman, dark hair. After telling me that I would need to wait for my table, she greeted the man behind me and asked if she could seat him at the counter. When I asked why she was sitting him before us, when I had a reservation as well. She stated that she knows him and he likes to be seated quickly. I explained that I prefer to be seated quickly also. She had not inquired whether I would like to be seated at the counter. Not OK.
My pasta dish was so-so but we enjoyed the bruschetta. It would be good if they offered a fully cooked fish dish instead of just seared fish. I give this restaurant three stars because although two of my companions said their seared tuna dish was good, my entrée was just okay and when we asked the waiter about the chicken dish, he said it was just okay, too.
Also, the tables are so close together that you have to slide them to one side to get out (and I'm a petite person).
Simply exquisite and exquisitely simple. Art is in simplicity: Brussels sprouts are consistently superb. The caponata transports you right to Palermo - subtle, genuine, comforting. And the scampi are grilled just right - which is so difficult. And well, the olive oil gives the sensual and quality note.
Had lunch with friend. We both really enjoyed our meals: I had the pear endive salad and the shrimp and squid sandwich. You could taste the excellent olive oil in the salad which had just the right proportions of everything. Ordered the sandwich cause it sounded different, and it was one the most unique sandwiches I've had: the texture of shrimp and squid together with fresh bread was so good. Friend had the meal size tuna salad and he said everything about it was very fresh and good as well.
Barbacco, what can I say? Very hip and cool, and at the same time, very true to the Italian kitchen. If you want something a bit less formal than the sister restaurant next door (Perbacco, also highly recommended), then stop in! We ate before the theater, we had very crisp and timely service without sacrificing the dining experience. And the wine list! Superb!
