Bar Vendetta distinguishes itself in a space that had previously been a fairly iconic restaurant, The Black Hoof, with a beautiful (and imposing) Douglas fir ‘glass canopy’ and a completely different, 70s colour scheme, modelled (very loosely) on Jen's teen basement bedroom in Scarborough. Nothing says 70s like brown, orange and cream! We didn’t want it to scream ‘Italian restaurant’ because frankly it’s only Italian-ish, using the philosophies of Italian cooking with locally available ingredients and a strong devotion to seasonality. Our pastas all made in house, by long-time chef, Annalisa Latavo and our front of house team is simply a dream! The sort of secret treehouse-feeling back patio is hugely popular in the summer, but we think of it as the perfect restaurant for a colder evening, cozy for tucking into a beautiful plate of pasta, with one of your favourite songs playing while you have a very nice Italian red.

Once inside, grab a seat at one of the candlelit tables across from vintage posters or at the cozy marble bar and dig into plates of beef tartare with garlic aioli, fennel and celery salad with walnuts, and tuna crudo with blood orange. Easily my favourite resto in Toronto. The food and ambience are impeccable, music is chef's kiss, and none of these are even the best part - every person who works there somehow happens to be the actual kindest human and an absolute wise sage of food and wine.

I’m usually not a picky eater but the food is so heavily salted. It was to a point where my last dish I had to ask for a sodium reduction because it was so much. Crudo was salty, firm tuna, burrata with strawberry was good but again heavy salt - I usually just have burrata with tomatoes or alone but I think this was made so we have to buy bread on the side or something (suggested by our waiter so we should’ve listen to get the bread, but no mention of salt level). The surf and Turf was so good and so is spaghetti with meatballs but I really just wish again just less salt. We ended up getting desserts elsewhere due to the food but service was 10/10.

We ordered some drinks, the cheesy bread, celery and fennel salad, the trecce and the tagliatelle. The cheesy bread was the highlight of the meal, but the fennel salad was a little sloppy with celery chopped too thick and way too much dressing, rendering the order soggy. The pastas were absolutely disappointing—the trecce had lamb pancetta, which was cut into such tiny little pieces, perhaps to mask how little of it was on the dish? The tagliatelle was soupy with little flavor. My friend and I didn't finish the meal and packaged it to go, but it tasted even worse the next day. The vibe was nice and the service was sweet. I wouldn't go back for dinner again, but curious to try more appetizers and drinks.

What a great find! This restaurant has a funky and fun vibe and boy is the food great!! As you enter, you immediately enjoy wonderful scents emanating from the kitchen. We started with cocktails—both were tasty. Then we enjoyed the cheesy garlic bread that is so tasty and has a bit of honey that provides a perfect sweet flavor finish. And it’s nice and light, not heavy. Next was a salad with apples, celery, grapes, blue cheese and pecans—so good! We shared the pasta pomodoro topped with ricotta salata —a spicy kick at the end and the cheese melts in…yummy. For dessert we tried the lemon torta—scrumptious! We had great service from Mariah and it was fun to watch the kitchen staff prepare the food. This is a small restaurant and tables are close together—we enjoyed speaking with fellow diners at the table next to us. If you enjoy fresh and delicious food and pasta, then Bar Vendetta is a great choice!
