   I love when I find a gem of a restaurant before the critics write it up and then can never score a reservation there ever again. This little jewel box is exactly that kind of find. Tucked away upstairs out of the hustle and bustle of NYC, is a gorgeous Art Deco rarity. The music was eclectic, the dishes silky, the staff convivial. And, they have all manner of Japanese whiskey, so yes, I will be back. And, yes, I am a fan. Bravi!

   First of all the Shun website can be a bit confusing. I wanted to make a reservation for the restaurant but accidentally made it for Bar Shun. That’s fine because it’s my mistake, but then we just thought we’ll make it a pre-dinner drink after we were able to make a reservation for the restaurant online. The problem is the lack of communication at this place. We ordered our drinks and we waited 30 minutes for it. The waiter should have noticed that we only had water cups on our table but just refilled it a couple times and never asked whether our drinks arrived yet. We had to ask the busboy to check because the waiter wasn’t so friendly looking anyway. Then we asked the captain/host to check it. Finally the busboy brought it. We asked which one was which drink since they looked similar color. He sent our waiter, and when we asked the waiter he just quickly mumbled the name of one drink. At least tell me the name of both drinks even if we saw it on the menu, maybe we forgot after 30 plus minutes of waiting. Then he rushed off after mumbling the drink name. It’s a high end bar and not that busy so what is the hurry. Then it came time for the restaurant reservation so we thought we pay for our drinks or ask if it will be included in the restaurant bill. The waiter then finally said they will comp our drinks because of the long wait. Why didn’t they tell us or apologize for it when they served the drinks or when we asked about what the drinks were??? It was all so confusing and uncomfortable for us. We know it’s just a bar but it’s quite a high end bar, so the wait staff should act like it. I would not recommend the bar shun.

   We tried 3 kind of Bar snack. Especially Cauliflower Panna Cotta with Caviar was so good and beautiful.

   Wow, Bar Shun is such a gorgeous hidden Gem! Having already had the good fortune of dining at Shun and Le Jardinier (Chef Verzeroli has truly outdone himself), I couldn't wait to try Bar Shun. I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and we were both totally blown away. The soaring ceilings, velvet banquettes, gold detailing and candlelight might make it the most romantic date spot ever. We tried a number of delicious cocktails and bar bites - the standouts for us were the Zen Garden Martini (Roku Gin, Nori and Cilantro infused Sake garnished with a cocktail onion and pickled ginger) and Japanese Highball (Suntory Toki Blended Whiskey, Lemon, Qdrinks Club Soda). Both were very unique and unlike anything we'd tried before. For snacks, we had toasted ham & gruyere mini bread, spring onion panna cotta with caviar and a generous cheese plate. We can't recommend this sexy hideaway enough - but get in before the secret's out!

   We decided to check out Bar Shun for a lighter bite and cocktails instead of the main dining room Shun. It was a great decision as we both loved the ambiance, the seating was spacious, the high ceilings and dramatic window treatment made the room feel so elegant and classy. We had 2 cocktails, The Villain and Mata Hari, both were extremely tasty, beautiful and well crafted. The server was professional, friendly and made good suggestions for us to try out the small bites on the menu but serve them in several courses, which was a great idea as we mingled and chatted while enjoying our food without feeling rushed. We started with the Spring Onion Panna Cotta w/ Caviar, it was divine! Then we had the most amazing thin crispy shrimp gaufrette, it was unbelievable! Must try! Smoked salmon with guac on endive was good but nothing to shout about, the codfish brandade croquette and mini ham & cheese were very well executed and great small bites to go with our drinks. We had more room to try more food, so we decided to go for their cheese platter, and we get to try some amazing spread of bread made in house, they were all excellent! When we said to each other that it was a bit cold with the AC, the server overheard us and quickly brought over a luxury box w/ pashmina selections for us to choose from, I have never had such personal touch, it made us feel so well taken care of, such a nice touch! Lastly, desserts....too beautiful to eat but we had to! They were delicate, creative, beautiful presentation and delicious! We left feeling satisfied, well pampered, spoilt, content and we will definitely be back very soon!!

    We absolutely LOVED Bar Shun! It has a relaxed, upscale atmosphere without feeling overly pretentious. We ordered several items from the bar menu and really and truly, everything we had was outstanding. The Citron Presse is officially my new favorite cocktail. The service was excellent and the staff made our experience extra memorable. Can't wait to go back!
