Located next door to Masa, the widely acclaimed, omakase restaurant, Bar Masa offers an à la carte menu, in a casual dining atmosphere.
Savor the unique culinary experience in an environment where the intricate attention to detail has cultivated a sense of shibui. Bar Masa features a bar made from a solid plank of African bubinga wood and walls of Japanese Oya limestone. The natural simplicity of the stylish bar is the perfect backdrop for the à la carte menu comprised of Chef Masa's fresh, experimental approach to authentic Japanese cuisine.
This place is a total ripped off. I had the sashimi Omakase. The fish was fresh, but for the price you would expect some Uni or Toro, but they only gave us some cheap cuts. Furthermore the sashimi slices were paper thin. What a sham!
Don’t bother to go unless you want to try it before it closes
Very good bur very expensive
Bar Masa is the epitome of excellence when you have a kitchen that knows what to do with the finest quality ingredients. Grand slam every time.
Food is inventive and delicious! The sushi, maki and sashimi is excellent and high-end Japanese. The a la carte/small plate menu is extensive, and there is something for everyone’s taste. The white peach duck slaw is melt in your mouth delicious! Flavorful and crunchy!! A new favorite.
Was fantastic time out of series
Much better than Massa restaurant that I will never visit, I went twice to bar Massa and thanks to Patrick and the rest of the team we spent a great time.
Food was amazing.
The Masa Toro Toro was absolutely amazing! Would recommend to anyone!
Fantastic all around. Knowledgeable server, splendid food. Can’t wait to return.
Really superb sushi and sashimi, in their most traditional forms. People seem to also enjoy the cooked options.
I wish I had better things to say. The food is excellent, but the level of service (waiters switching off, timing willy-nilly) just isn’t consistent with the deluxe price tag. There are so many better options; here you are buying the name.
Super nice and knowledgable staff; and also accommodating. Would definitely go back - especially for the Peking duck tacos.
Loved the atmosphere and set up. Fantastic menu. Food quality was excellent.
Consistently high quality, meticulously prepared sushi
The masa toro toro and dancing shrimp tempura are really impressive. Just.. for lunch, it’s a bit pricy .
The best fish served in the best combinations by the by best people. ❤️🍣❤️
Bar Masa was SO amazing that we went back the next day for lunch! The Toro special roll is worth every penny...best roll I've ever tasted. Sizzling Shrimp is not to be missed along with the Sizzling Octopus. There isn't a kids menu but definitely stuff on the menu a kid will love. Service was impeccable with great recommendations along the way. All dishes were served very timely and the green tea cake with candle was a treat for a birthday celebration.
Amazing food and service would def go back. A bit expensive though
Very relaxed and professional; and incredible food. Expensive but well worth it!
It's ok, but if you are expecting Masa service, Masa sushi and Masa experience you should go elsewhere.
The appetizers were delicious but the hero, the sushi, left a lot to be desired. Maybe we went on an off day but I was underwhelmed by it.
We enjoyed our experience. Loved the Uni.
SAME kitchen as masa, but à la carte. Probably the best restaurant in nyc.
Be prepared to spend a bit, maybe $100pp w/o drinks, $150pp with drinks
-Get the duck tacos(!)
-the rice with beef and an egg on top (opt. For no foie gras on it, save some $)
-the spinach (they de-vein the spinach, honestly a special treat)
-black miso cod
(Say the items as listed and the wait staff will know which they are, idk all the exact names)
Bradley has great cocktail advice
Lunch omakase was 7/8 bland and uninspired and 1/8 disgusting. Despite only one other table being seated, servers never asked how our meal was. Beef/foie gras bento box was passable (foie delicious, beef flavorless). My lunch companion and I both agreed we would have had much more enjoyment literally lighting the 200$ cost of our alcohol-free lunch on fire and watching it burn then consuming the overpriced trash that was what bar masa puts out as their Chef’s choice experience.
Went with a friend of mine who come and visit, and she always like the food and service here. The food was good as always. However the service was terrible this time. The whole unagi was only half of the eel, and only after we pointed out, they told us that it was a “typo” on the menu and it was no longer served whole. They did served the second half after that. Then the manager Gustavo came and tried to move us to the bar when we just paid our check and about to leave, telling us there were people waiting. We left nonetheless in 5 minutes and there was no one outside waiting for a table. Won’t go there again.
The food, ambiance and staff were amazing. If you are looking for a place that feels like you are not in the city and quite, this is the place.
Our server was great. The service was impeccable and food as usual was great. It is not a cheap option but we really enjoy it!
Roasted uni was much smaller than they usually have
Excellent food—-and, we lived in Japan for many years & food meets very high standard.
We arrived for our reservation and were told that they were just waiting for another party to leave and then they would seat us. Although the other party had already paid, they only seated us 30 minutes later, refusing to inform the other guests that they had another reservation for the table!?
To make matters worse, the manager only comped our party of four two appetizers – at his selection - edamame and mushrooms.
Either way, we let the disappointment pass and ordered a handful of dishes. Every portion was extremely small, with the exception of the cod and rice. And most were either flavorless or too salty, with none special enough to match the exorbitant price.
It's too bad because I canceled another reservation for this place. I should've kept the other one.
We actually thought it would be joke to dine at Bar Masa casually when the place next door costs $1300 for two with tip. So we went last Sat pre-theater and found our experience in fact to be a joke at all levels. First of all, the hostess that seated us had all the personality of the kind one would see in Orange-is-the-N-B that we actually thought we were serving her. The wait staff was equally arrogant, self-serving, lackluster, probably knowing that they could be serving guests at Masa next door for much higher tips, uhhh much higher. The food was very expensive but very mediocre -- we ordered the fried soft shell crab ($28), the small-portioned fried rice with foie gras ($28) and both were under seasoned and underwhelming. One order of hamachi sushi was $8. By true logic, we thought some of the 3-Michelin Star food next door would somehow rub off with the dishes at Bar Masa but what we got was haughty attitude and unexciting food. Mr. Masa, do you think your guests at Bar Masa could even get scraps from your Temple of Valhalla next door next time? We left and headed for Bouchon Bakery for hearty sandwiches and their caramel macarons. Our advice -- just read about Masa and don't get tempted to think Bar Masa is going to be the same ilk, if even for a small bit.
Way overpriced for average sushi
Too many good places in New York to return
Food is amazing and the sommelier was the star of the day!
Food was amazing and the service was really good, fast and nice. The bar was really noisy and busy though, the only thing I would change. It is expensive, but no where near Masa. We were full, had drinks and dessert and paid under $200/pp. As a foreigner though, having to add a tip seems a bit ridiculous, as the tip can go up quite a bit... sure if it is expected in this place or not. Overall I thought food was amazing and I would certainly go again.
Ordered sushi tasting menu at a cost of 120$, got 13 pieces of quite ordinary nigiri. No «wow» factor. No waiting dishes, no extra. Be sure to get seated by the bar, or else you have to sit under a curtain with no view. Probably a great place 10 years ago, now outdated. I would not go there again.
Consistently top quality ingredients/food, service and atmosphere. Could easily eat here 5 days a week
A delightful birthday lunch setting for my daughter. We all shared bites of each other’s Bento box - everything was amazing! The kale salad is especially delicious, and the matcha crepe cake was the PERFECT birthday finish!
Waiters stressed us, food was good, but they forgot some of our orders. Loud music from speakers.
Not happy, and will not come back.
