Bar Italia Ratings and Reviews
Swordfish was very good and juicy (not overlooked!), liver was good but a bit too salty. Flan was a bit heavier/denser than is typical, almost a cross between a flan and a Creme brûlée.
Wait staff very pleasant and accommodating. Quarters a bit cramped, but workable.
We ate at Bar Italia during NY Restaurant Week. The prix fixe menu had fabulous choices. I had thinly sliced salmon (carpaccio) as appetizer and veal as entree. The salmon was delicious and the veal tender and flavourful. Paired the entree with a glass of montepulciano. It was smooth with complex mocha tones. This is my wife's favourite restaurant.
I am a big fan of this restaurant as I've been there for many times, the food is really good, the service depends sometimes is really good sometimes can be not good at all. Another issue in my view is the reservations, most of the times the table is not available at the time you book, you have to wait sometimes 30-45 minutes, but again the food is outstanding.
I went to Bar Italia late at night. There was no one. I got there, sat down and they rushed us into ordering straight away. The place is supposed to close at 11pm and they told us that the last order was at 10:15- "because the chef wants to go home". For this type of restaurant this is not acceptable!
After, I ordered a beef carpaccio ($28 for a couple slices of beef) and they brought it without arugola. I asked for a little bit of arugola and they charged it like if it was a regular salad ($16). Basically, a regular beef carpaccio is $44.
I complained and the manager told me- "ok, I won't charge you this time but next time.... I will". In this case it would have been better for him to say nothing because for me there will be no "next time".
If you are looking for better Italian food close by go to Sant Ambreous- the service, the food and the staff are 100% better
Food was seriously not impressive given the price. The burrata only was good, gnocchi were more expensive mashed potatoes than typical gnocchi. pizzas left all of us disapppointed after eating at juliana's in Brooklyn the day before. Waiters very unfriendly and seemed bothered by our presence. Off my NY list
I brought my husband here for his birthday and we had a wonderful night. The bartender is a force of nature who really knows her stuff. The restaurant is sleek and lively; everyone is there to have a good time. The staff is top-notch: warm and hospitable and spot-on with food and wine recommendations. We had carasau (scrumptious Sardinian flatbread); insalata di spinacini; perfectly al dente pesto pasta; costoletto di vitello alla milanese; pollo del giorno; and sublime peach sorbetto. The only thing we regret is not having room for the Italian cheese tasting platter. Next time!
