Went out for mother's day with my son, my daughter-in-law and the two grandkids. Found the restaurant on the OpenTable App. The dishes was inventive and surprising (even the rice balls!), the service was accommodating, and the bill was more than reasonable. Will be back!

Incredibly unique, creative izakaya food. The rice cakes are among the best dishes I've tasted in NYC.

Bar Chuko is one of my few go to restaurants in my neighborhood. The food is consistently excellent, the service friendly yet unobtrusive, and the space itself inviting whether a crowded or sparser evening. Most highly recommended!

"I really want ramen." This simple request by my fiance unfortunately led us to a disaster of a meal. After attempting to try Chuko Ramen and being told the wait was an hour and a half, we needed a different plan. The host at Chuko suggested Bar Chuko down the street if we didn't want to wait. It makes you wonder why their sister restaurant doesn't have any wait, yet it's a 90 minute wait for a bowl of noodles. Well I have the answer! The food at Bar Chuko is simply not very good. We started with wings because "how could someone mess up wings?" Well, these wings were so fatty that our finished plate look as if we barely even tried eating them. We tried! I got the tuna tartare rice bowl for $19. In my head I figured a rice bowl for $19 (their most expensive on the menu) would be delicious. Well I was wrong. It came out and basically looked like a deconstructed spicy tuna roll in a bowl. The rice was plain and room temperature, the "tuna" was just a mushy pile of overly-mayonnaised spicy tuna salad, and the couple pieces of seaweed left a lot to be desired. I was not pleased. My fiance ordered...wait for it...Ramen! They do have a ramen option on the menu, and you would think, being owned by the same folks, that this would be the same recipe, and a great way to not have to wait in line for it. Well, I sure hope it's not the same. If it is, those people are insane for waiting 90 minutes to eat it. We have made better ramen at home using the $0.50 packs from the corner store. It didn't help that the two guys at our "communal table" kept taking turns going to the men's room to get high. I can't blame the restaurant for their actions, but you should be ready to sit at a table with strangers, and you never know who you'll get to deal with. So, if you are looking for an alternative to waiting for ramen, I would not recommend Bar Chuko. There are so many places on Vanderbilt without a wait, I'm sure you'll find something you love.

Fantastic Izakaya style Japanese food with some twists. The best grilled artichoke I have ever had - with an amazing pecorino laden dipping sauce. Fantastic sweet, spicy, crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside chicken wings. Smaller bowl (i.e. small plate) ramen and rice bowls that are outstanding. Great grilled meats with an interesting selection of tendon, joints, etc. Super friendly staff, great conversation. If you're going to Barclay's for a concert, as we were for Rihanna, this is a perfect place to pre-game. Great drinks, sake, beers, and food and just a short jump from the venue. Amazeballs all around.

The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We tried a few of their cocktails which were delicious and generous. The food was also delicious. We had a few small plates, then a ground pork rice bowl and a chicken bowl ramen. Everything was perfect. Two cocktails, 2 glasses of wine, 2 small plates, 2 of their larger plates. Under $100.

Our fault for confusing Bar Chuko with Chuko Ramen, and Bar Chuko is a nice space with good cocktails. But the food is not cheap and the portions are very small. Not sure how they get away with charging more money for a smaller bowl of their ramen than they do a little further down Vanderbilt at Chuko Ramen? In short, go for a drink and some snacks, but not for dinner, unless you want to pay a lot and leave hungry.
