"Fideo and borracho beans with cilantro and pork belly simmering on the stove, the spicy warmth of menudo every Christmas and New Year’s, egg salad with a fried egg between a butter toasted bolillo, and puffy tacos stuffed with lengua carnitas and crushed avocado and doused with pequin chile vinegar salsa. These are just some of the dishes that have inspired me – the food that I was nurtured with by the women who raised me. Bar Amá is my interpretation of their Tex-Mex." – Chef Josef Centeno

Bar Ama is one of our favorite downtown LA restaurants. It never disappoints. We sat on this occasion in the outdoor patio in the alley--very pleasant. The service was impeccable. Our server was knowledgeable about the dishes and when they were not able to answer our questions got the information promptly from the kitchen. In addition, our server's recommendations about how many dishes to order was spot-on. The cocktails and food were amazing. Excellent vegetarian options, although perhaps the very talented chef could come up with some creative ways to include protein in the vegetarian dishes? We loved everything we ate--the grilled okra, the cauliflower, the vegan mushroom birria (wow!), the sweet potato mole enchiladas that the kitchen was able to make gluten-free for us, the caramelized peaches, the light rice pudding.
Our first time at the restaurant and Zoe, our server made it happen. She made the Manhattan, recommended the fried chicken, heirloom tomatoes with Santa Rosa plum and rice pudding. All excellent. She was attentive.
The drinks and the food were very good! Will definitely come back
Made reservations and were not seated until 30 minutes later. Ordered and appetizer that never came. Food was great!
Great food, convenient parking around the corner, very attentive wait staff, all-in-all totally worth the downtown hustle.
Great food, great cocktails, the type of NYC small bar/restaurant vibe that is hard to come by in LA. Flexible enough for a date night, night out with friends, or a quick drink at the bar. Not overly fancy or pretentious, just right!
The food was not great - appetizers were ok but all the mains were sub par
Visiting from dallas texas, the food was really good the queso was the best drinks were good and strong felt like we waited to long for a waiter to come to us and my card got charged twice
Joseph’s food is truly wonderful, the atmosphere and customer service is excellent. Highly recommend.
Really mediocre food. Not worth coming back
So happy to be back! Thank you for excellent service!
The queso is silky smooth and delicious.
The off the menu puffy taco is the best! We love Bar Ama
Great tex-me food. A little pricey but worth it. The mezcal margaritas are amazing.
We chose to sit in the patio because It was too bright inside. They need to get a dimmer for inside or maybe get someone to be in charge of that dimmer.
Such great service.
So good - squash blossoms were transcendent. Best margarita in la
Fantastic food all around for Super Nacho Hour. Can't wait to be back for more.
Boring menu, food was bland
The food was amazing! I’m not a fan of spicy food, but I was told their food is more TexMex style… and that’s very true! Drinks and food had a smokey taste opposed to hot spicy. I had the green enchiladas and mezcal margaritas. Yum! Everything had great flavor! Drinks were a little expensive, but I think that’s normal for DTLA. Overall loved it! Will definitely go back soon!
all around wonderful...! great drinks and queso fundido is a classic
Food was great, drinks were just okay. Service was almost over attentive the host refilled our water almost every 5 mins
Not what it used to be.
The food was exceptional and there were even some favorite dishes from the shuttered Baco Mercat that we remembered and enjoyed. We'll be going again very soon.
The food was absolutely amazing!! Unlike any Tex mex I’ve ever had. Compliments to all the chefs and staff 👏
It was great as always. Loving the patio in the alley vibe. I really hope that can continue after Covid restrictions are up.
Food was delicious! The pitcher of margaritas was easily shared between 4 people. Food was brought out quickly and the waiters were so kind and attentive. Would definitely come back for another girl’s night!
We had hoped our experience at Bar AMA would be a good one but we were pleasantly surprised with an outstanding experience. The food was exceptional! We had the queso and steak and chicken puffy tacos. We also tried the fish tacos which were great with a request to substitute the flour tortillas with the puffy tortillas for which Chef Josef Centeno is well known for. We also had the opportunity to meet Chef Josef and what a wonderful and kind person! Overall would definitely recommend and cannot wait to return!
Over priced for the quality of food.
Staff was awesome
Food is always delicious and creative. So fresh. Drinks are incredible
I always want to like Bar AMA, but the food consistently underwhelms. The mushroom birria in particular was very disappointing.
Outside dining only at this time.
Very tasty take on Mexican food. Favorite dishes were the queso and the ceviche, which was outstanding.
They are taking Covid seriously, which is appreciated.
Best to order tequila or Mezcal vs the cocktails.
THE best! Food was as delicious as I remembered. Great experience. Thank you!!!!
We went for happy hour. We ordered amá margaritas, nachos, guac, and tacos dorados. I really loved the guac and the chips. The chips are so good! The nachos were good. Honestly I enjoyed everything. No complaints. The outdoor seating area is super cute and cozy. You have so much space to socially distance but also to have an intimate conversation. It is very hard to find parking though. I ended up getting a parking ticket ($63) bc I didn't get to my meter in time to renew it. There is a parking lot for $10 a couple blocks before the restaurant on 4th that I should've parked at haha. Oops. But I liked this place and I'm happy I tried it.
Loved this for my first post lockdown dinner. Great staff, food and atmosphere.
While the food has remained consistent, the have removed some of the best menu items and the service is very poor.
Amazing food and a super cute outdoor seating area!
Lovely restaurant. Delicious food. The drinks are diluted.
No good for the price, we order margarita pitcher and you can taste the cheap tequila on it.
Great food but a little bit pricey considering the ambiance. Didn’t like plastic glasses for a wine...
