The food sounded great on the menu but did not actually taste anything like what was described. I ordered the thai basil pesto dish. It just tasted like ramen noodles with pesto and red pepper flakes.
Food is the best in Boston! We bring family from all over the world to try the amazing avocado baos, spring rolls and any and all things with noodles!
For brunch, they have no alternative milk options, which is not favorable. The service was poor, the waitress told us to double order an app if we wanted it to feed all of us (party of 4) because only two dumplings came in the order, but 5 or 6 came in each order so we had to pay for something we didn’t necessarily need. The tea water was also luke warm and not hot, so not very good for steeping.
Second time at Banyan ! All the food we ordered came out cold😔.
Very nice ambience but the menuooned more interesting that it was. A number of the dishes were overly sweet or else bland. Myers and Chang is much better—would have gone there if I had been able to get a reservation!
I have been to Banyan almost 10 times at this point. Whether it is for a special occasion or a dinner with friends Banyan has blown me away every time. I would go as far as to say that it is the best restaurant in Boston.
Last Saturday we had a 6:00 reservation before a show near the common. The service was very slow and it took a while for the waitress to come back for a drink order. We had completed our meal and we had to ask for the check since we needed to get to the show. Also, we decided to eat inside since we used to frequent hammersleys a lot and for some reason they put us way in the back near other customers that were around our age or older. Will probably not go back for dinner.
Delicious (and unique!) food and drinks. Kind staff all around. Their avocado bao buns were incredible; their ramen pesto was so clean and wholesome (not greasy like you get with regular pesto). Bummed we needed to leave or else I would’ve ordered that pineapple upside down cake. Will definitely return.
The cocktails were creative and the food was very tasty. We had a long delay between apps and main course but everything turned out fine. I would gladly eat there again. The salmon poke was terrific!
Drinks were well balanced but over iced. The dumplings were delicious but a shade bit gummy. Loved the bimbap bowl variation but the pad thai variation was way too heavy on the celery. Brunch menu was tiny so I'm eager to go back and see what the dinner menu has to offer. I did love the self serve all you can drink coffee, really nice intimate touch.
Been to banyan plenty of times both for lunch and dinner. This time wasn’t too great, service was great and food was okay. Not bad but very very far from special. Had the french toast which was mediocre, the banh mi which was slightly dry, the summer rolls which were okay, dumplings and cocktails. Really nothing that stands out compared to the dinner menu which is great!
Great food, service and atmosphere. Can get pretty loud
My friend and I had a wonderful meal! We ate everything on the menu with the words fried chicken in it! SO GOOD! The pineapple cake dessert was yummy, and our waiter was outstanding.
Shaking beef tasted only salt and we were real close 2 very loud tables. Not a memorable evening.
Seems like they just rolled out some new menu items with a new chef involved. We loved all the new stuff.
The new spring menu for Banyan is delicious. Love the food, the service and the character of Banyan.
Last night in the USA with our in-laws.
The food and drinks were great, but service was very slow, we were often looking around for our waiter to refill drinks , and she forgot one of our dinner items.
This was my second time in one week and is quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite. We love Matt, the best service ever!! The food is tasty, omg I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Very flavorful, the atmosphere is chill... overall, two thumbs up!!
We went for brunch. The service was very good. The food was ok. I recommend going for dinner instead.
Fun place on a Saturday night.
The place was nearly empty but I don’t know why! Atmosphere and food both an A+.
Games made it extra fun!
This was our second time to Banyan Bar. Once again we enjoyed it very much. I did feel that the food was a bit better the first time, especially the bao. This may have been because our first visit was at 9:00 pm and the place was a bit quieter, and this time we went at 7:00 and every table was busy. Our reception on our first visit was also much friendlier than this last time. Again, this may have been due to how busy the restaurant was on each occasion.
Had my wife’s bday dinner and the servers, hosts and management were extremely welcoming and helped us celebrate my wife’s day with a great time, noise levels were up due to the final 4 game, but on the last times we’ve been to Banyan we were able to have a quieter, intimate time. Food was awesome and drinks as well. I would recommend Banyan for date nights and bday celebrations.
Food was delicious. Service was great.
We had a great time at Banyan Bar. Delicious small plates in their Saturday Sunday menu and excellent drinks. Only word of caution is to not come here hungry or expecting brunch.
Great food with lots of spice and flavors. Started with Spicy Poke with Tarro Chips. Just the right amount of spice and just delicious. The second was the amazing fries. No way to describe how unusual and good this is. Last course of the dim sum was the oyster baos. Very good but the thick slice of apple was a bit overwhelming in the bao. Thinner would have been better. Dessert was the cheesecake and it was also yummy.
Food and service were SO much better a year ago. Fewer vegetarian options now and the only substantive ones were VERY spicy. Will not to go back.
Great fun ambiance! Fun drink menu. Different and delicious food. Flexible menu (able to make orders without certain ingredients)!
Great as always. One of our favorites in Boston. Food is fantastic and creative and atmosphere and service are great.
Pork Belly Bao was delicious!! Whole fish dish is sumptuous.. the green tea cheesecake was very yummy.
Disappointed that they don’t serve espresso, cappuccino, or latte.
Loved the painkiller!
Mackenzie and Jimmy was attentive, personable and very efficient in getting us out of there before our show.
Definitely coming back to try out the other dishes.
We LOVE Banyan. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is great. Brunch is so cool cause you can relax and play games as you eat dim sum.
I don’t usually write reviews but I loved this place! Not only was the food great but the service was very accommodating! I have an allergy and they were sure to communicate with me about the ingredients in the dishes and modified the recipe to make it suitable for me. Our server was very attentive and even gave us complimentary cheesecake when she learned it was me and my boyfriends anniversary! Will definitely be back and will recommend to my friends!
great food but somewhat limited menu, have had great friendly service but last visit server rather indifferent, which was surprising.
Very limited wine list if it makes a difference to you (it does to me).... only 4 white wines on menu (all glass or bottle), of which 2 were not even available that evening.... how is this possible ?
The staff and especially the manager were so attentive in ensuring that our dining experience was enjoyable, as we were celebrating a special occasion. Everything from the ambience to the food selection was detail-oriented and especially memorable and our food was brought out in a very expedient manner. We were particularly appreciative of how kind the manager was in checking in with us and cutting the cake we brought for dessert. I’d definitely visit Banyan Bar + Refuge again.
This was a pre-theater dinner and the three of us loved it! First, location can’t be beat. Right in the middle of the South End’s entertainment center. Then the decor: whimsical and uplifting. One can’t help but smile at the flamingos, crockery, lighting. I got there early and enjoyed a very fine cocktail at the bar while waiting for the others. Staff is friendly and enthusiastic along with being competent, attentive and helpful. We were in time for delicious $1 dumplings (yum), and my mates enjoyed their drinks, too. We shared plates for appetizers, mains and dessert. No complaints at all. We ate every morsel with relish. Finally, the bill. Absolutely reasonable! Thanks, Banyan, for a terrific experience. Can’t wait to come back.
I was looking forward to Banyan Bar but was disappointed. The decor was fun and interesting, the service friendly but kind of incompetent. The server forgot to put our appetizer order in and described what supposed to be a very spicy dish as very spicy. It turned out that the spicey dish was pretty bland as was the rest of the food. The drinks were the high point of the evening and frankly, the food had a lot to be desired. It is too bad because the bar looked fun and the location is great.
always a great place! friendly with great food, the menu is always inventive. amazingly inexpensive wines and sake for the quality. you will be glad you ate here.
We had wanted to try banyan bar for a while but were very disappointed. The food overall was remarkably bland, and the our bread pudding was so burned we had to send it back. However, the drinks were good and the atmosphere was fun. That being said, there are other far better restaurants in the south end!
Great cocktails, great food, nice server, great ambiance. Not too loud to have conversations. Will definitely go back.
