This was a pre-theater dinner and the three of us loved it! First, location can’t be beat. Right in the middle of the South End’s entertainment center. Then the decor: whimsical and uplifting. One can’t help but smile at the flamingos, crockery, lighting. I got there early and enjoyed a very fine cocktail at the bar while waiting for the others. Staff is friendly and enthusiastic along with being competent, attentive and helpful. We were in time for delicious $1 dumplings (yum), and my mates enjoyed their drinks, too. We shared plates for appetizers, mains and dessert. No complaints at all. We ate every morsel with relish. Finally, the bill. Absolutely reasonable! Thanks, Banyan, for a terrific experience. Can’t wait to come back.
I was looking forward to Banyan Bar but was disappointed. The decor was fun and interesting, the service friendly but kind of incompetent. The server forgot to put our appetizer order in and described what supposed to be a very spicy dish as very spicy. It turned out that the spicey dish was pretty bland as was the rest of the food. The drinks were the high point of the evening and frankly, the food had a lot to be desired. It is too bad because the bar looked fun and the location is great.
always a great place! friendly with great food, the menu is always inventive. amazingly inexpensive wines and sake for the quality. you will be glad you ate here.
We had wanted to try banyan bar for a while but were very disappointed. The food overall was remarkably bland, and the our bread pudding was so burned we had to send it back. However, the drinks were good and the atmosphere was fun. That being said, there are other far better restaurants in the south end!
Great cocktails, great food, nice server, great ambiance. Not too loud to have conversations. Will definitely go back.
Great service, the food was excellent! They made us feel special for our anniversary! Highly recommend.
Update: went back a second time got a takeout order and it was subpar. Dining in the food was amazing and we were disappointed with our to go order. Very Small portions and cost the same as eating inside. :(
Great service from the whole Banyan team-thank you!
Lovely food and interestingly presented. Some were a tad modest in amounts. Our waitress was a delight.
It was a tad too loud. I would have liked better music. This is a prefect setting for dancing however.
Only issue was the noise volume coming from the kitchen but otherwise we loved it!
First time here. It was up beat, fun and drinks and food were amazing. We dine in Boston in regular basis and this is one of my favorite new spots for us in past 12 mos. will be back soon especially with nice weather approaching.
Banyan Bar + Refuge is AMAZING! Went with some friends to celebrate a long work week and got exactly what I was looking for. Great food, yummy drinks and the staff was AMAZING! Totally recommend the scorpion bowl, if you can handle it! :)
A lot of the food tasted the same. My palate became bored quickly.
Always a great place to dine. The food, drinks, and service are excellent, and the the restaurant is beautiful and comfortable.
The food was delicious, service wonderful!
Enjoyed our visit to banyan before the calderwell show.
Will definitely visit again
Our waitress was exactly what was needed - friendly, kind, and there when we were ready to order a drink or another order of delicious bao. Thanks to Liz for being lovely. Delicious food and drinks - definitely coming back!
Everything was fantastic—food, ambiance and drinks. Will definitely be back!
Our first time there and we would highly recommend it.
upbeat decor. inventive food offerrings. Creative beyond belief. Love love this place.
Overall- I would say that the drinks are the best part of Banyan. What was most disappointing was really just hospitality-related. We made a reservation for 8:30pm and we’re not seated until 8:55, after a party that had arrived AFTER us. The worst part was that the table they offered us was on a bench between all the other 2-tops and there was a party of 3... squeezed in at the 2-top next to us... yelling... just wtf.
Hard to come back from- they were also pretty non-accommodating when it came to vegetarian options. They gave us an old menu and didn’t have the veggie option anymore (??? Ok, make sure you switch out all your menus?) so the new options were: apps, a cold dish, or a “f-ing spicy,” as the menu proclaimed, dish... which was just needlessly alarming (it wasn’t that spicy it was actually very good). I wouldn’t be complaining if the old menu wasn’t distributed tbh, because the food was all really good. Get the avocado baos... but don’t expect this to be the best dining experience of your life.
Food was disappointing- nothing special. Service was horrible server super rude.
The food was not what I expected and did not have authentic flavors and was bland. Service was ok but our server kept asking if we wanted more food and kept interrupting our conversation.
Frankly, one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Boston. Great food and atmosphere with exceptional service. Must try!
We had a fun pre-theater dinner. The cocktails, entrees and the bread pudding dessert were all wonderful!
Always love Banyan! Great place for groups, love the food and drink selection
Food and drinks were good but service was odd. I've been a few times now and I'm not sure that I would go back. It's always been just a mediocre experience.
The salmon poke was delicious!! and my friend loved the oyster boa. Wish there was a little more selection on the menu but it's a great place and great server. Really nice about getting us out in time for the ballet, without feeling rushed. Look forward to next visit!
So much better than when it opened. On point! I wished that they’d seated us in a booth because the fake VIPs never showed up to use the 3 booths we were not big enough for.
Excellent food and presentation; excellent server; a little noisy
Drinks were not great, food was mediocre at best (not fusion, lacked overall flavor). Service was okay
Wonderful service and food. Great place for groups!
The food & drinks were soo good, and I LOVE the atmosphere here!
Great food and some wonderful vegan options!!
Outstanding, inventive, amazing flavors. Service was top notch.
Amazing food and beautiful place.
Banyan’s 1$ dumplings are perfect. Truely a dumpling that’s form and tastes on par with the best china has to offer. The dim som is of the best quality you will find in the city. Enjoy all of this under the whimsical ambience and kitchy pink flamingos.
Great food, waitress was really nice in that she made sure we knew about the happy hour special a few minutes before it closed. Would love to go back there and try more of their food. Only feedback is that it could have been a little quieter.
My favorite restaurant in Boston. Food is always consistently tasty and the service is amazing. Out of all the places in the city- they do the best job.
A unique menu and cool aesthetic make Banyan appealing, but in reality the food underwhelms and the tables are so close together I was basically on the date with the couple next to me.
Didn't really see the value of this spot. It was a beautiful space, lively, and well staffed. It just fell short on the food. We tried a fairly wide selection of the menu and nothing really clicked (except the wings =]). Lastly for two people who don't drink, seeing a $100 bill is quite unusual - especially if we're walking away with a "meh" review. Seems like this spot is better for drinks and ambiance. I would not recommend to anyone looking to experience the Boston food scene but more for folks to meet up after work or shopping to relax and enjoy the cozy and trendy atmosphere.
