Bandar Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We picked this restaurant because it was rated highly in the local city magazine. The food was mediocre at best. The hummus had much more garlic than we care for. The pita was cold and obviously out of a bag. We chose two chicken dishes. The portion size is huge. Each dish had what I would estimate to be close to a pound f chicken breast and three or four cups of rice. It would have been nice for our waiter to warn us. Seasoning was minimal. We left very full but not very satisfied. Go as a group and order half of what you think you need.
WE HAD HEARD FROM THE CONCIERGE AT OUR HOTEL NEAR THE GASLAMP DISTRICT OF SAN DIEGO THAT THIS RESTAURANT HAD THE BEST KABOBS IN TOWN. WE WERE IN THE MOOD TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT SO WE RESERVED. IT TURNED OUT TO BE PERSIAN CUISINE. WE DECIDED TO SHARE A BEEF AND A CHICKEN KABOB. IT WAS PRESENTED OVER AN EXCELLENT BED OF RICE AND A VEGETABLE. EXCELLENT SERVICE AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, EXCELLENT FOOD. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE STAYING AT A HOTEL, WE TOOK BACK AMPLE LEFT OVERS. WE WERE REALLY IMPRESSED. THEY ALSO HAD AN EXCELLENT BAR.
This was our first time at Bandar, as a family we wanted to try Mediterranean food for a change. We were seated in a room where there was one table occupied by a large party, lots of children running around and we came to find out that the children were the owners grand kids, they were everywhere, the parents of supposedly the owners relatives pretty much ignored their children, one of the adults even did a burpie excersice while we are trying to dine in, we felt that we will not have a pleasant dinner due to the chaos that these people were making, mind you these are related to the owner of Bandar. We asked to move to another area. Our server was always nowhere to be found, our order took about 40 minutes from the time we placed it. We had to hunt for our server for refills, she never checked on us, on our food and if we needed anything. Of course she was all smiles when she delivered the check which is typical with Some servers. In short this will be our first and our last to dine at this resto. Disappointing
Although the food was very healthy and delicious, we will probably not return. It took more than 45 minutes for our dinners to be prepared. When we ordered two chicken and rice entrees, we were the only guests dining. I understand "slow food" however, this was beyond slow.
Secondly, portion sizes are too large for the average eater. Both entrees were served on platters, with the equivalent of three and a half chicken breasts for each diner. Who eats more than two chicken breasts? Portion sizes could be reduced, resulting in lower food cost for the restaurant and lower menu prices for the guests. Perhaps that would attract more patrons.
Although several website indicate that there is free corkage on Mondays, the server insisted the corkage would be $25. Accordingly, we left without eating.
We have been waiting to try the restaurant for some time, but this was our second attempt. The first time, we tried going in for lunch, using the posted lunch menu. We were told that no, "it's a Persian holiday", so only the full price dinner menu was available.
We give up.
Good was great and very tasty but service was almost painfully slow. Restaurant seemed to be either understaffed or inefficient as the place wasn't full but still took a fair amount of time to prepare dishes for a group of 8 who were sharing 4 dishes.
Overall, great food and would extend a recommend if you like Persian / Middle Eastern food. Service was mediocre.
The food was very disappointing. The hummus and other dips were mediocre at best. I didn't feel the food was representative of true Persian food. In fact, I felt it was knock-off or not authentic at all. The eggplant stew dish served with rice and grilled vegetables had a very unpleasant smell/odor and taste. It wasn't salty or spicy or sweet. It was like "old socks" flavor. I don't recommend this restaurant and I won't go back even though I understand that tastes vary. But everyone in my party conceded that the food was the worst.
It was fine, actually the rack of lamb was great but then just a large pile of dry rice - period. Okay but .... Service was great, a nice enough place but I'd probably not go again simply because there are just better restaurant in the same neighborhood. It's okay just not memorable.
We had a big party for family celebrations. The environment was perfect. It was a nice, energetic atmosphere. Cheers and celebrations were welcomed. Portions of the entree were very generous. My sister and I split a dish and we still had left overs. Overall, it was a great experience and everyone in my family was very happy with the choice!
The portions are HUGE! I came after doing a 7 mile hike and I felt like my body was ready for the food binge but after giant dolmas (fantastic grape leaves), barley soup (that was a bit bland) and the gigantic pomegranate stew with chicken (tasty and unique), I gave away all of my dinner leftovers to a homeless woman because there was enough food for two! The owner/server seemed really nice and hospitable and really friendly. The atmosphere was romantic and welcoming. Overall it was great! I'm glad I was able to find in Open Table in my way back from a hike.
