Welcome to Balmoral Restaurant. Grand Scottish Fare as you’ve never experienced before.
Lush, dark Scottish wood tones greet you upon entering Balmoral Restaurant. A deep-set coffered ceiling hides recessed lighting, designed to light your table elegantly, providing just the right mood. Scottish designs surround you, from the tartan carpet, to wrought iron fixtures, to the swords and shields of lore, to wall murals that evoke the placid Scottish countryside. At Balmoral, we bring the incomparable splendor of Scotland to you.
The food and service were, as I indicated, outstanding. Seth, our server did a fine job and was most attentive. We were greeted and sat immediately, but of special note was the fact that we weren't hurried at any time and this added to the overall experience.
One negative comment.... The 'sides/vegetables' were sparse, and barely sufficient for two people, let alone the three of us. In addition, there doesn't seem to be much variation in these sides, but, instead, only consist of carrots, beans and mashed and croquet potatoes both times we have visited. Surely, seasonable vegetables and a variation on the potato theme would be a 'plus', for example, asparagus always makes a fine compliment to a good steak.
Small points but maybe something to consider.
What a gem in the far western suburbs. Amazing menu plus 100's of scotch selections! Homemade warm bread - 3 different types! Scotch egg - outstanding. All of our entrees were excellent. The owner Colin is delightful. You are greeted by a bagpiper. At least on Saturday night. Overall, we will be back to try the pheasant and Loch Ness monster shrimp!
Great restaurant! It is truly a dining experience. Fantastic authentic Scottish food and great service. Lots of added touches.
It was my first time at Balmoral and I thought it was fabulous!! The food was amazing, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere truly Scottish! Loved it and will be back!!!
Great experience! Food and service were spot on
Excellent as always!!!! The restaurant is always so on point!!!!
As usual, our food choices were beyond compare. Balmoral is definitely our "Go To" choice for special occasion dinners.
We went for the “tea” and as my first experience was for dinner everything was phenomenal !
I could not say enough to give this restaurant the accolades it deserves.
Thank you for such an enjoyable day!
So many rave reviews...we had to see what the buzz was about. Came with a party of 6. Were seated promptly and bagpiper opened door for us (no tunes lol). Substantial cocktail menu...had a hard time choosing. Drinks came and so did the dinner menu.
Many choices on menu with a wide variety from traditional Banger and Mash/Shepard’s Pie to chicken and fish. We had the mushroom appetizer which was good, a tad bit pricey for button shrooms. Beef Wellington was very delish as was the Bangers and Mash and the White Fish (forgot what it was? trout?). If you get dessert- get the Toffee Pie or whatever it’s called. Amazing!!
Skip the sticky pudding - blah, no sticky !!
We spent $200 per couple...so it’s expensive. For this price tag I expect phenomenal. It was good, just NOT phenomenal! It’s not like I am dying to go back.
From appetizer to dessert every item was outstanding
This was my first visit to Balmoral, and I can't wait to return! I tried Haggis, and thought it was amazing. The restaurant is an advocate of the farm to table concept, sourcing from local farms. My family shared Pheasant, Rack of Venison, and Beef Wellington. The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, and the service was outstanding.
This restaurant and its exquisite food transported me back to Scotland. It is so refreshing and lovely to find a Scottish restaurant, let alone one with a live piper! From the first piece of brown bread and honey butter, to the last bite of strawberry meringue, I was in heaven. Thank you for such a lovely experience; I can't wait to come back.
Fantastic did in the burbs. A truly unique dining experience worthy of a revisit. Kudos.
excellent restaurant. this was our first visit. we'll definitely be back
We have been wanting to try Balmoral for a while now and our only regret is not making it there sooner! Absolutely top notch in every way. Impeccable service in a lovely atmosphere with phenomenal food. We are already planning our next visit.
I’ve been twice and both have been absolutely amazing! No detail left undone
Immediately upon entering you felt the relaxed elegance. We were seated in moments and our waiter appeared right away to inquire of our needs. I had caught a glimpse of a well stocked whiskey bar and walked over to get the bartender’s insights. He found me a never tried and excellent bourbon. The menu was intriguing and unique, never having been to a Scottish restaurant. We had a wonderful liver mousse and Haggis as appetizers and continued on to lamb shank and an incredible rack of venison.
This was one of the best meals that I’ve had in a long time. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. The ambiance- it felt like we were in a quiet little place in Scotland.
Everything about our experience here was perfect and the food was top notch. Highly recommended!
The service was outstanding, and our food was delicious. The menu is a lot of fun. Balmoral is a local gem. This restaurant cares about what it's doing, and it shows.
We found Balmoral welcoming and friendly. The Food was excellent, well prepared and interestingly served. Staff were friendly, ready to meet our needs or wants. In total, it was charming and pleasant experience, and we will be back.
We were placed at a table that was in the main drag of wait staff and patrons. We had to shift around as they brought in a new table from outside. That lowered the "ambiance" rating substantially. Also, the prices here are quite high for the locale.
Our first visit and we weren't disappointed. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in. The drinks and food (lamb shank and filet mignon) were excellent. The decor and ambience were as Scottish as could be in the middle of Illinois. Overall, although not cheap, it was a very worthwhile experience. We hope to go back to try their high tea. A great option for a special evening out.
Although a Scottish restaurant seems out of place in the St. Charles and Campton Hills area, I couldn't be more pleased with the entire experience. This is not just a restaurant, it is indeed an experience. From the greeting at the front door of the bagpipe player, to the warm welcome and handshake of the owner, to the decor, the ambiance, the perfectly prepared food, I was extremely pleased and would recommend this restaurant experience highly. When's the last time you had a restaurant focused on your entire experience, from all of the waitstaff, to the head chef. This is truly a gem!
Authentic Scottish cuisine in the Chicago burbs. A very special place to enjoy a unique menu of traditional Scottish items prepared brilliantly. Eating here is truly an event.
Service, food and atmosphere were all top drawer.
LOVE BALMORAL! One of our favorite places ever.
Earl is just the best, can’t say enough about him.
We were able to see Colin tonight as well - always a pleasure!
What a wonderful eating experience! Beef Wellington was perfect. Tried Hagus (so?) as an appetizer everyone in our 5 ppl party enjoyed. Menu has a variety that is unique and tasty. Will go back to try the Tea!!! Loved this place!
All in all we really enjoyed our time at Balmoral- BUT-
Service was slow- NOT because of our server - who was great, but because we were told Balmoral only staffs for reservations. A restaurant should always be aware that walk ins happen- and they should be prepared. We had a reservation but were told a few walk ins were there. Our server , who was great- was running ragged trying to keep up. The bartender was lovely and helped out as much as she could- but the restaurant was understaffed on the floor and it was felt.
The food was delicious , the smoky whiskey drinks were so good, our server ( who I think was named Amber ) was SO friendly, kind and working very hard, and the bartender was knowledgeable and helpful. Another server to help out would have been great!
Excellent service and food!!!
Incredible food. Incredible service. Pricey, but 100% worth every penny. Will be back again.
We loved everything!
We came for a late lunch/early dinner on Sunday. We started with a beer and cocktail, a great dirty martini! We then ordered the Sunday roast ham dish, and the mushroom rib eye steak dish. Both were excellent, we love the included side dishes as well - mashed potatoes, croquettes, green beans and glazed carrots. The homemade bread to start is delicious as well. Finished the meal off with the strawberry meringue dessert, just delightful! Portions allow you to take some home for another meal tomorrow. Great food, extensive menu, we enjoy coming here and will return!
PcPat thank you for dining with us and fully experiencing our little piece of Scotland in the Chicagoland area! We can't wait to see you again.
Food was excellent and service was robust. Will save this for special occasions only due to price!
Earl at the bar will guide you through your scotch journey. Then enjoy the Haggis Drambuie before a fantastic, Scottish-eclectic assortment of entrees.
Awesome as always
Interesting menu with a good variety of dishes. We enjoyed the smoked haddock starter and the haggis starter. The ribeye steak was tender and delicious and the braised lamb shank was fantastic. In addition to the food they have a huge variety of whiskeys, but work commitments kept me from trying any. Finally, sticky toffee pudding was very good.
Wonderful ambiance and creative menu! Having visited Scotland, we found Balmoral authentic and a trip overseas without leaving Chicagoland.
Went for our anniversary dinner. Requested a quiet table and ended up in the middle of the dining room and no acknowledgement of the reason for the reservation. Server was awesome though there was a lady walking around taking orders to help out and she completely forgot one of our appetizers and the server really did nothing to compensate for that other than say “this is why I like to take my own orders”. I cannot stress how amazing the food was, and the bartender is great. Overall I will go back for food but hopefully the order is placed correctly this time.
An amazing experience from start to finish!
To start, we were greeted by a bagpiper at the door, which was very unexpected. As soon as we walked in, the restaurant manager greeted us with a smile and a warm, hospitable welcome. Our server and server assistant to right there with bread, waters, and cocktail menus practically the minute we were seated. I went with the blood orange old fashioned, and it did not disappoint. The cocktails are pricey, but boozy! For dinner I chose the Beef Wellington, a dish I’ve never tried before but have always wanted to, and it was perfection- Crispy, flaky pastry on the outside, and perfectly medium rare filet inside. I have no idea how I’ve gone 44 years without having it in my life! For dessert we had the Millionaire Shortbread, and it may possibly be the best dessert I’ve had at a restaurant ever.
The delicious food aside, what really stands out is the level of service at The Balmoral. The servers are attentive, but not overbearing. They know the appropriate times to come check on the table, which is a skill lacking a lot of servers these days! They truly care about the guests having an enjoyable experience, and they achieve just that. They made us feel practically like royalty from the minute we arrived to the minute we walked out the door. Definitely unexpected in Wasco, IL, but totally worth the trip. Dinner was not cheap, but worth every penny for the outstanding and very memorable experience. We will definitely be back!
