Jared really made my mom’s birthday special!
Great spot I never knew about despite living in the area for years. Food was quality and large portions. Great ambiance overlooking the boats in marina with live music in background. Birthday meal was awesome. Service was slow, but we were in no hurry and enjoying, so didn't mind so much.
Our server I think Tony was so nice and helpful, beef strogonoff could have had a little more sauce. Overall fabulous.
Made reservations two weeks ahead, I got a confirmation phone call from the restaurant a couple of days before, yet on the day of, I got a phone call from the restaurant stating that they were booked and they had to seat us at the lounge. Needless to say I was extremely upset, it was my good friends Bday and wanted to make it special for her, but it started pretty bad. I told the girl that she need it to figure it out, I make reservation at the restaurant and not at the lounge. She call me back and stated that unfortunately she had no room at the restaurant for us. When we got there, she told me the same thing and when I asked her why this was happening when the reservation was make days in advance she said because the reservations was done through open table. I asked to speak with the manager, he managed to get a couple of tables together for us and after 30 minutes of waiting, we had a table at the restaurant. The weir thing was that as we started moving toward our table, most tables in the restaurant were clearing up??? This was so confusing for me and my friends. Michael the manager took good care of us, but I will never go back there again.
I didn’t get the table I requested, and the service was exceptionally slow. I had to try to get the server’s attention a number of times. Food as always was exceptional!!
The food is so so but the views of the Marina is wonderful.
Taking advantage of Dine LA to try out Baleen Kitchen for the first time. We were not disappointed. Everything was great, food, service and ambiance. It will be one of our favorite places from now on.
Our server recommended the chicken and I never order chicken when out to eat. It was amazing. Best chicken ever. I would definately have it again.
I went here with a friend for the dineLA dinner special because I’ve had numerous pleasant dining experiences here in the past. Tonight the service from our waiter was subpar. He seemed distracted, hard to “find” and inattentive. His busboy and another delightful server, Miles, saved the experience for us. The kitchen and bar also seemed a bit off, with things being nicely presented, but tasting “just ok”. The setting was lovely, as always. I am really hoping this was an aberration and hope to be back to find what I’d come to expect from BALEENKitchen. I don’t think I’ll be able to convince my friend to return however. It brings to mind the saying “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”, And I suspect most people do not return to a restaurant if their first impression of it was not good.
The server was friendly but awful in the service area.He did not split our order. When we asked for another plate we never received one. The people behind us that ordered the exact same thing split had their salads and dinner split properly. I also requested extra dressing for the salad which had blue cheese. 10 minutes later he arrived with Caesar dressing. When he asked us if we would like to order a dessert we said yes, but he came back for the order about 10 minutes or so later. Mind you, this was not a busy evening and they seemed to have plenty of waiters. This is not the first time I have received poor service. We go back because we have a boat in the Marina so it is convenient for us and the food is pretty good. They need to train their staff so it’s run smoothly.
I went to BaleenKitchen on Saturday 7/20 for DineLA and found out that they don't do DineLA on the weekends!!! I've been there for DineLA only on weekends in the past since most of us humans work during the week. This was not noted on the DineLA link while making a reservation. The food has always been good in the past but this time it was not memorable and I'll probably not go back there again though I really like the restaurant for special occasions the last 5 years. That is very unfortuate.
The table provided was one of the smallest along the back wall with no view and too windy to have candles.
The menu is outdated and quality of the food was a 3 star, pricing is not inline with quality, very poor.
The food was excellent, with a nice variety to choose from and the prices were reasonable for a fancy restaurant. The portions were somewhat small, however. The piece of key lime pie we had for desert was tiny. The setting is beautiful, in the marina with a view of all the boats. However, the restaurant might want to install shades on the ocean side because the sun shining into the restaurant was very bright for those sitting on that side. One customer was holding a paper folding fan up to his face with one hand while he ate with the other, in order to block the sun from his face.
The location was good, the food was good, the service was very very slow. They had extra people preparing a banquet room, and they could have helped, while the room was not used. But no. The food is okay, the service will make me think twice.
For our first time experience, it was wonderful. Service, food & ambience could not have been better! Kudos to our waiter Jared H. & manager Michael for making my birthday dinner a very special experience. It was so good in fact, we have agreed to return this coming Sunday evening for dinner with friends who have a boat in the marina!!!
Food was excellent. Menu was a little limited (just one fish, snapper, on the menu. No halibut, sea bass, ahi? But the steak was great.
Fantastic food. Love the new menu! The Tomahawk steaks are great!
Beautiful setting and lovely restaurant ambiance. Had indicated it was our anniversary, and had actually been married there. Host wished us a happy anniversary and asked us to be seated while they prepared our table. We waited, while several other parties were seated. We were finally seated, in a small table for two, in the middle of floor, nearest to the galley. I was shocked. Other parties of two were seated at large tables for 4 at the window with a view. Food was good, our server was ok but never a mention of the anniversary again. I was really disappointed to be honest.
Today we made reservations to celebrate my birthday at Baleen’s and it’s hard for me to express how disappointed we were. The waiter Jared was horrible. The restaurant was empty, Yet we waited 10 minutes for him to come over. When our guest inquired about the fish tacos, we were told they were fried, but they could be grilled instead. My husband and our guest both then decided on the chicken sandwich. *which was fried.....this was not mentioned on the menu....and Jared never mentioned *** nor was described as coming with fries, which they did not want. So basically, they did not eat any of it. My lobster roll was very disappointing, but that is not Jared’s fault.
When the the barely touched lunch plates were cleared and we expressed to Jared how disappointing the fried sandwiches and fries were, he placed the dessert menu on the edge of the table and asked if we wanted dessert. By then, we just wanted the check and to leave.
Now come the best part. We asked for the bill to be split on 2 credit cards. Jared did split the bill, it he charged both to my husband’s card. When my Husband checked his credit card statement, the card had been run and credited almost a dozen times!
This whole experience was not only disappointing but so embarrassing for me. I spent the rest of the day apologizing to my friend. This is not how I expected to spend my birthday lunch.
Dinner was good & we had excellent seats by the window. Unfortunately, even though my reservation mentioned that it was my birthday, the restaurant didn’t do anything special for it.
Excellent food -slow drink service -loud party at next table!
They have the best cioppino ever - and enough for two.
July 4th dinner. Entire staff overwhelmed. Seemed like there was no manager helping to run the place. We had a baby and a stroller. After we were settled in our seats, hostess came over to say she sat us at the wrong table and wanted us to move. Waiter forgot our appetizers and drinks. They took items off the check which was appreciated but they need to get their act together for holidays.
We were living in the adjoining apartments at the Portofino for a few monrhs
We celebrated another birthday with the free surf and turf - that meal is quite a deal and delicious. We also loved the blistered shishito peppers, my husband's favorite green vegetable. I enjoyed the brussel sprouts and you cannot go wrong with the cioppino. Some of our other favorites are the wild mushroom flatbread and the miso glazed salmon. Frankly, we have never been disappointed with anything we ordered. The service is impeccable and the ocean/marina ambience is very relaxing. Be sure to make reservations to take advantage of the free valet parking.
Very nice atmosphere, service wonderful . Menu was limited but food was excellent, I assumed there would be a selection of fresh fish options being right on the harbor and with the name Baleen, but not so. Still 5 star!
Great all around!
I can just say AMAZING..beautiful spot to spend some quality time.
Great place to unwind, enjoy the view and be spoiled with wonderful food and service!.
Steak was way over cooked. No changing table in restroom for infants. Requested two wines not available.
My family and I had such a wonderful experience with the food and the whole ambiance. The food was delicious and the whole scenery was very beautiful and relaxing! Our only disappointment was our server, I don't remember his name but I do know that he was a tall Caucasian guy with glasses. He seemed like he didn't want to serve us, he wasn't very warming towards us at all. It made us feel uncomfortable!
The food was very good and so was the service. The drinks not so good.
Nice view and friendly people.
Attentive service, nice atmosphere, delicious wine and food. The skirt steak was especially amazing.
Great skirt steak and oysters , yummy Brussels with pork belly. Super cool location looking over the harbor and a nice old fashion to sip!
Great place real gem! Found it on open table otherwise we would have never found it!!
Our book group was meeting. They gave us a quiet table by the windows. Our server was attentive and not intrusive. Breakfast was delicious. We were very pleased. We have met there two or three times and have always been happy with the food, service and ambiance.
There was nothing exciting about this experience. The food was overpriced, there was no salt or pepper offered. The bread was hard. We had the miso salmon with soba noodles that literally tasted like cardboard. If it were cheaper maybe it would have been mediocre at best
Worst service for the many times I've dined at Baleen.
Food was good as always but the service was horrible.
It wasn't even crowded. I had reservations and the host did not seat us by the window and 5 minutes later sat another table by the window view with the exact same table for 4. We ordered non-entree food and after waiting 20 minutes we asked before they brought anything out. But we had to ask for everything twice - extra small plates, extra spoons, bread, butter. Worse service I've had at a restaurant for a while. Food is always good but too bad service did not come close at all.
