BALEENkitchen Ratings and Reviews
Great spot for creative cocktails, good food and good wine. The space is relatively small, but comfortable. It would be best for a small group or couples, although they do have space for groups. It is perfect if you are staying right next door at Portofino Hotel.
Food was awesome.
Our waitress was awesome too.
However, some of the servers were young and uncaring. One filled our glasses with water and spilled water all over the table - did not ask for pardon and didn’t return to wipe the table. The two servers who served our entrees just placed them on the table, not where we were seated. Suggest to train these young servers even if they only do this as part time work.
My Wife and I, Come here once or trice a year. This has been her favorite place to eat ever since our second date here in 2014. We rate this location on a scale from 1-10 as a "10" Excellent service, Ambiance is Excellent, From the greeting at the front door to the time we leave the Waitress to the Manager's have made our time here a memory we will always cherish! Thank you Baleen's for what you do. Because we love this place so much we feel like it's our best keep secret. Eating by Fireplace, View of the harbor, open air windows, Fireplace in the lounge with the band on the weekends, nice comfortable seating. There's not enough time to say more but we had an experience on Valentine Day with every dish we taste. October 2016 I propose to my wife with the help of management they made it the best ever. The next year 2017 we married and now Valentines Day the special times keep rolling. Dreams do come true! If your want to experience the magic when you make reservations tell them The Morrison's referred you.
Great service and great food. I didn’t enjoy the taste of my vanilla latte and they took it back, only asking if it wasn’t good. I responded that it simply wasn’t to my liking. Something about the flavor. However, the bottomless mimosas were great as was the food. Beautiful atmosphere and view.
Came here for brunch after my wedding at the Portofino. A bit irritated because they combined my mom and my reservation without our permission. This forced a 20% gratuity on everyone’s bill (her party only had 4 people), cheated her out of Open Table points, and is just all around irritating to cancel someone reservation without permission the evening before. Just a poor business practice. For reference we did still have 3 separate bills with 3 different tables. But two of the reservations made under the same last name were combined.
The food was delicious. We tried everything from the eggs breakfast, to the corn meal pancakes, several of the different eggs Benedict’s, it was all delicious. If you want a slow casual brunch with marina view this is a great spot!
The service was fine. The servers are nice, but not exactly high end quality servers. They are a little slow and miss/forget a lot of little things along the way, but nothing that’s bad enough to greatly impact your experience. Just enough to know you aren’t at a high end restaurant. I knew this when I made the reservation because I tried out the restaurant with my finance ahead of time. I just warned everyone upfront and apologized a few times on behalf of their mistakes and everyone was fine. The convenience of the location made the less than superior service okay.
Everything was under seasoned and over cooked which was bizarre given it came to the table very quickly. The wait staff were pleasant and eager to please yet very inexperienced. They kept taking away plates while we were still eating until eventually one member of our party was still eating while the rest of the table was cleared and they offered the check. It was so rude. I was scared to go to the restroom for fear they might clear my unfinished drink. Had we taken a long time to eat or if the place was full I might understand this behavior but the place was practically empty (on a Friday night)
We love Baleen for it's ambiance - a great place in our neighborhood for upscale food and cozy atmosphere. We have had some great meals there - we celebrated my husband's 50th birthday 3 years ago with a brunch for 20 people and the food, service, and overall experience was perfect! For Christmas Eve we came for an early dinner before going to a gathering. It was a fixed menu that looked fairly enticing. We felt that for the price, it left a little to be desired. The portions were small even for a bistro style place, and the desserts were not as special as we had expected for the price (we thought the lava cake would be gooey and warm, it was really just a little cup like the shortcake cups you buy in the store, only chocolate). With that said, the entrees were pretty good and the ambiance was perfect for a lovely, cozy dinner, and that was the main thing we were looking for. We were very appreciative of the employees who spent their Christmas Eve working to make it special for others.
The service was a little slow and the bar was even slower. Limited in Vodka's and the martini was the tiniest on record with a nice price attached. Think this restaurant needs a few more months to work the kinks out of the kitchen and bar.
The ambiance was nice and quiet and the bar music was appropriate for the setting.
Did not appreciate having to pay for parking at the kiosk before entering the parking area as they have a good valet at the hotel which is right next to the restaurant.
We are local and have enjoyed many celebrations here in the past and hope to do so in the future.
We are tenants in the Marina, so we go to Baleen regularly for drinks, but not to eat. This was the night of the King Harbor Boat Parade, so there was chaos. Drinks took WAY too long to get, but with the crowd it was understandable. We kept the meal simple: a BLT wedge salad, simply shrimp for Nancy and me, and simply salmon for our friends. At the end of the meal all four of us were remarking about how great the food tasted.
The server brought us a complimentary lava cake to make up for the slow cocktails.
All in all, good food and great fun.
The restaurant and staff were totally unprepared for the crowd following the boat parade. We had reservations and were offered the worst seat in the restaurant, even when many tables were open. We waited long periods for drinks and food. Our server was apologetic, but there is no excuse for waiting a half hour for drinks. We will not return.
I went to Baleen with my girlfriend because we were on a staycation and wanted to eat a nice dinner on the water. There was barely anyone here, but the food was delicious, the service was very nice and attentive and the view was spectacular. I highly recommend coming here.
Friends were visiting and I wanted a nice ambiance, good prices and a mellow environment. It was all those things. It was a beautiful sunny day and we got a window seat. We could talk without having to shout which is a plus. The service was adequate but the food wasn't hot and we didn't get coffee and condiments in a timely fashion.
Food was not great, restaurant under renovation so they put us in the bar. Hopefully the bar is next for renovation because it is extremely dated. I was really surprised that they let all the servers wear jeans, in my opinion that's not the type of restaurant servers should wear jeans
The actual restaurant is under construction. So they have a make shift restaurant in the hotel lobby bar across the street which you don't know about until you get there. They are bringing the food you order from across the street. Some food was cold. The menu choices were also limited which was a shame as I picked the restaurant on its full menu. Open table should contact these people are post on the site that the restaurant under remodeling and another fabulist is being used. Not great and I won't go back.
Wasn't aware that they are remodeling Baleens and temporarily "moved" into the hotel Portofino lobby bar area. The lobby is pretty and they had a musician adding to the ambiance but they had a limited menu and although the food and service was fine, it was uninspired and disappointing. We're going to wait until the renovations are completed to go back.
The food at Baleen is always good. We had the Manhattan Chowder. Perfect for the cold and rainy night.
My complaint would be that right now when you show up for your reservation they have closed the restaurant for upgrades- and don't tell you when you book that you'll be eating in the hotel lobby. It's a lovely space but loud. There was a band playing and children dancing and screaming. Normally I wouldn't mind but had just wanted to relax with a glass of wine, a bowl of warm soup and enjoy some conversation while looking at the boats in the harbor.
We went to Baleen 2 years ago and had a fabulous time in the restaurant and very good, gourmet food. Service was great. This last visit, we arrived at the hotel and were told the restaurant was closed, even though I had made a reservation thru the website, and that the restaurant was temporarily moved into the hotel lounge. Was super noisy, not the ambiance I had remembered and looked forward to. Also, this meant that the lobby and fireplace was not available to us as hotel guests, as it was now a restaurant. Not cool.
Situated on the docks, this hidden gem of Redondo Beach makes a fifteen dollar breakfast feel like a fifty dollar experience. The main establishment is currently under renovation so you will have to part ways with the eastward facing restaurant for a lobby breakfast patio turned restaurant. Though this seems like reason enough to search for another restaurant, you'll be pleasantly surprised by its grand westward windows which frame the sea break just yards away. It feels like the waiters all know that you expected to be in the original advertised location because they are extra attentive, helpful with the menu, and don't falter on quality service. What was built to be a stop for business gatherings between the hotel lobby and rooms upstairs have been tactfully converted to "BALEEN #2". I'm sure it doesn't hold a candle to the original location, but it isn't a bad spot if you're looking to start the morning with a seaside view. I had the Huevos Rancheros and it was surprisingly amazing. Portion sizes are for people who are hungry but not starving and flavors mixed well on the place. For a dish which can only be perfected in a taqueria, this upscaled version wasn't bad. I would order it again. All in all, its a fun spot to visit, especially if you have a day of tacking, jibbing, and cruising the open water ahead.
Our waiter was less than helpful in response to our inquiries and missed several opportunities to sell us on Baleen's specialties. The food was average and not the quality you would expect from a pricy establishment. The acoustics were terrible and walking upstairs into the restaurant was awkward dodging all of the bus people who didn't make room for the diners.
This has always been my go-to restaurant for brunch, so I was more than disappointed with my last experience. The elevator was broken and we had to carry my mother up and down the stairs. We got a brief apology, but no offer of a free drink or any break for the inconvenience. The food was bad. We ordered bottomless mimosas and never got one refill after the first drink. We had to ask 2 people for the bill. I won't be returning.
