Our Party of 4 had dinner at Baldanza at the Bedford Post Saturday evening, we were greeted by a lovely hostess and taken promptly to a delightful table. The restaurant was crowded and it seemed that a large party was going on an another room but we felt comfortable. We heard the restaurant had 2 new chefs from Aquavit and Kittlehouse and were looking forward to coming. Happily the food not only met our expectations but exceeded it! For appetizers we shared the burrata, beet salad and the tuna for the table all were great. I had the halibut for dinner and loved it. In my opinion, Baldanza at the Bedford Post is hands down the best restaurant in the area.
It's so disappointing that this attractive and often remodeled property has failed to produce more than a mediocre restaurant for the past 25 years; other nearby locations have. The open farmhouse setting is far from country elegance by any definition, and table cloths would not be a sign of decadence. The squash ravioli was totally off, the butter more burned than browned, with an off-putting scent that easily overwhelmed the sage and whatever taste the filling might have had. The braised rib pasta was good, as was the salmon and the trout special, but when the fish is served skin up, the skin should be grilled to some crispness; Meyer lemon risotto was bland. Wine service was poor: a brunello selection was not available, but the suggested chianti substitution was far off the mark; fully a third of the white was left unpoured (and was never chilled as requested because it seemed the bottle was placed away from the table in a farmhouse-looking bucket with no ice). The chocolate desserts were good, even though the dessert menu card spelled one of them "MOUSE"--yes. Mickey would not be happy, nor were we.
Our go-to place for special occasions when we want refined low-key quiet luxury.
Rebecca was an exceptional waitress and the two hostesses where lovely and helpful also. A wonderful place for a refined meal.
*Need to fix: They need to add some simple snacks at the bar... it is an issue when you want to enjoy a cocktail on an empty -pre dinner- stomach. Doesn't fit such a high-vibe place.

I was very disappointed by Baldanza. We had terrible service despite the restaurant being empty. Some of the dishes were ok, but overall the food was mediocre at best and way overpriced for the quality. It is such a shame because Compagna was excellent. It seems like the Bladanza chefs and the servers are ill-prepared for the level of service and cuisine that the Bedford Post should have.
it's too bad that you don't make a distinction between "the barn" and "the farmhouse" in asking for a review as the food--and ambiance--are quite different in the two.
brunch is in the barn, which is smaller than the farmhouse and can get pretty noisy. food descriptions are enticing; the food itself somewhat less so. portions are relatively small, and the food is expensive (but not unexpected, considering that it costs to get high-quality food--and service--out here in the boonies).
that said, the place is still perfectly respectable, and is the only good alternative around (except for an even more expensive competitor).
Baldanza in New Canaan is one of our favorite restaurants and we have been meaning to go to Baldanza at the Bedford Post since we heard they hired two great new chefs. Finally made it for dinner and were blown away with not only amazing food the service was also right on point. We were concerned when we saw a large event going on with a packed house for dinner in the main dining room but our concerns were put to rest when our appetizers came out. I had the hand made squash ravioli's in sage butter, my go to favorite, and these were among the best I've had. My wife had the beet salad and loved it. For our entrees I had the Osso Bucco and I'm till thinking about it and my wife had the salmon. Both were off the charts. Rudy, our waiter, made the evening a total success.
A real uptick from the former owners. The restaurant leverages Bedford Post Inn’s property to create a sophisticated country atmosphere. You are comfortable in a suit, but upscale casual is more common in the dining room. Patrick behind the bar mixed us excellent cocktails and while the wine list is no bargain, reasonable choices can be found. We were impressed with our appetizers, especially the pastas. All made seemingly moments before servicing, the pasta itself is delicate and delicious. My wife had fish and it was prepared perfectly. The BPI Burger is fantastic but the server did let us know the cook towards the rare end of the scale so order appropriately. The bar is also a great option to eat, and a nice atmosphere as well.
We have been regulars at the Bedford Post and then Campagna and Baldanza in New Canaan. Our experience was horrendous starting with the unwelcoming greeting when we walked through the door. We were seated at probably the worst table in the restaurant, service was slow, no specials offered and the menu/food was underwhelming. Given this is a Relais & Chateau property, the restaurant does not match up. We will not be going back, which is a disappointment given there are not too many interesting places like this in the area. Overall a lousy experience.
We had an 11:30 brunch reservation. At 11:50 I asked the hostess if we could please have someone take our drink and lunch order. It was not at all crowded but they were getting ready for an afternoon wedding. We finally placed our simple order, yogurt and a chicken sandwich, it arrived 30 minutes later. The food was awful. We will never return even though we loved it under the former owners.
Invisible service. Farm fresh ingredients. Bucolic setting. Baldanza is back!!! After a less than stellar summer due to a very strange manager, a new leader was installed and perfection has returned. Baldanza is back to regular rotation as one of our top choices for the Bedford, Pound Ridge, New Canaan, and Greenwich area!
This use to be our favorite restaurant in the area. The food was always amazing. Unfortunately the new management and chef ( if there actually is one) leave a considerable amount to be desired. The food was average at best even though the prices remained the same. And they ran out of Champagne and their bar was not stocked. Great shame...
The atmosphere at the Barn was quite nice .. rustic for a lunch. Staff was nice but the service slow and I mean slow.. I have to say the service was awful.. not sure if it was the kitchen or lack of servers. Lunch was on the high side price wise but acceptable
.. the portions were quite small.. which was not!
So sorry I am giving a poor review since we had such a wonderful time as a family but that's because we enjoyed each other and not a reflection on the restaurant.. they must improve. Maybe the Farmhouse is much better but the Barn needs work
Perfect dinner. Perfect drinks. Invisible service. Thanks to our great server, Rachel! Baldanza suffered a bit of a change during the summer and thankfully they got rid of that horrible manager George who didn't understand the customer base nor the menu. Baldanza made a spectacular recovery and is back on track. We had a five star night!
We had been here when it was Campagna and were really expecting a similar experience. Being a Relais & CHateaux, I could not have been more disappointed. Service was deplorable. My colleague ordered a Martini that arrived warm and tasteless and promptly returned. The menu was disappointed and we ended up ordering two past dishes, both arriving cold and had to be returned. We waited an hour before we received our appetizers. I spoke to a manager to no avail. I would not recommend this restaurant and I will not return. Beyond disappointing and the tables on either side of us had the same complaints.
New the the area and was seated when we found out no liquor license yet. We went to leave as we were celebrating and wanted a glass of wine. Sarah nisbeth to the rescue!! She is the hostess with the mostess!! She saved our dinner and our evening by quickly thinking on her feet to get a bottle of wine from the Inn. We offered to pay for it but the restaurant literally could not sell us the wine so we left a huge tip. Anyway, Sarah you rock! Thank you for an amazing evening and now since we will be regulars , taking a note that table 36 is "our" table!
So after my review last week about the loss of great service and warmth, we went back again this past Sunday because we really want to love it again and the chef is doing a great job.
It was a little better because some of the servers were nice. Still our server, Jose Garita (has been for the past 4 visits) either doesn't like his job or doesn't like serving us. After we flagged him down to take our order he never came back to see if we needed anything. We had to ask other servers for water etc. Still no smile, not happy to be there. Not sure why Baldanza doesn't see importance the staff is to the environment.
Also, they lost or didn't renew their liquor license.
We'll keep showing up hopeful that the service will come around to the good old days. Next time we'll just ask for a different server.
My family came for Sunday brunch and we love this restaurant. The service was fantastic and everyone was so friendly. Each of us loved our food and the atmosphere was casual elegance. I wish we lived closer as we would want to come here more often, but we will definitely stop in next time we are in the area.
Made a reservation on Open Table and fortunately called to confirm. I was advised that Friday, August 11 was BYOB. Apparently, the responsible party failed to file the necessary paperwork to extend their liquor license (ouch). When we arrived, our waitress indicated that I would need to open the bottle of wine myself and left us with a poor excuse for a cork screw. After struggling (successfully) to open the bottle, a manager showed up offering to take in in the back and open it (where was he 5 minutes earlier).
I ordered roast lobster ($45) after being advised it was 1.5 lbs and my wife ordered stripped bass. Both dishes came over-cooked. They were done to perfection the second time. Unfortunately, my 1.5 lb lobster was split and I only received half of it (which I did not realize until after we left the restaurant).
Went to retrieve my car from valet parking in the rain and the parking attendant was no where to be seen. He showed up 5 minutes later.
The restaurant, apparently under new management since it became Baldanza, has been open since April and the bugs should have been worked out by now. Hard to recommend to anyone given this amateurish performance on all levels.
Restaurant was closed!! You should take baldanza off your reservations if it is closed. They had the barn open, but that is differently menu that has less of a selection. I was bringing a client and her wife and had to go somewhere else which was embarrassing.
"What's happening here?"
Was a question my husband and I asked ourselves frequently during our most recent visit to Baldanza. After making a last minute Saturday night reservation we arrived on time to an overly full parking lot. Normally not an issue, but on this evening there was no valet to speak of. (Its not that a valet is essential to my dining experience, but the lack of one was noticeable given how we've been greeted by a valet for every other visit.) After taking 10 minutes to squeeze our vehicle into a nonexistent spot, we then proceeded towards the restaurant. As we entered the foyer we immediately noticed there was no one to greet us, and in general no staff visible within the restaurant. After several awkward moments waiting we were finally met by a somewhat flustered hostess who asked us if we had a reservation. We did, and she went on to explain how Baldanza's liquor license had lapsed and they were unable to serve alcohol for the next 2 weeks. We decided to stay since the food is always so good and when we told the hostess that was fine, she again asked us if we had a reservation . . . as if she was worried about space, which was odd since nearly the entire inside of the restaurant was empty. (We later came to take this as they were probably understaffed that night.) Once seated we again experienced some odd wait times for bread, order requests, etc. but once the food arrived most of our anxiety was relieved. Both dishes were excellent, and clearly had not fallen victim to whatever circumstances had befallen the restaurant. Long story short, the meal was good, but the experience made us worry about the future - Is there new management? Departure of key people behind the scenes? Frustrating thoughts given how solid the Bedford Post has been for the past few years. We'll go back . . . . but warily.
The Farm was our favorite restaurant for many years. We would always boast about it and bring family and friends whenever they visited from out of town. We have had many brunch celebrations there over the years. I'm happy to share lots of lovely pictures. Unfortunately, after they went through the 1st ownership change it began going down hill. The food suffered 1st. The go-to-must try dutch pancake was taken off the menu, smartly put back on then they changed the recipe! Chef's changed, menus changed and we finally gave up when the service changed. Losing Juan was most a big loss. My son kept going and recently reported back the pancake was good again, so we have been back 3 times in the past 2 months. Happy to report, the food is great again. Unhappy to report this once warm, inviting and cozy restaurant has lost all of its charm. It used to feel like you were eating in a good friends kitchen. Now the waiters are inattentive, don't remember orders and are not at all friendly.
On the last 3 occasions we were not greeted or served with a smile, not even from the hostess. Others around us felt the same. The Farm is still a beautiful place to eat, the food is back on track. We would love the warmth and service to live up to the past brilliance and deliver nothing less than this environment and customers that want to frequent it deserve. Hoping to return to a happier Baldanza!
Baldanza accepted reservations for dinner, turned out to be closed. Eagerly expecting high end dinning experience only to be forced to eat in farmhouse diner, a more appropriate venue for casual lunch than a romantic evening dinner.
Service is earnest but incompetent.
Staff watched while we passed in heavy rain to the main restaurant, which was closed. No apologies, just indifference.
Food is good.
Restaurant was mostly empty.
Everything became clear when we realized new management is the same jerk who owns Baldanza in New Canaan --- good food, but the sort of place that will turn you away if you don't have reservations in spite of the fact they are half empty! Walk by a few hours later and the place is still empty,
Baldanza's management is intent on sinking the new place as well.
Avoid the train wreck.
Campagna was a great restaurant: the food was excellent. The new restaurant in contrast is ho-hum. Not bad, but somewhere between a diner and a nice restaurant. I give it a B for the effort. They have shrunken the menu. I went the safe route and a had a burger. Nice but overpriced. It was a burger. The Japanese shishito peppers were cooked wrong: to be authentic, they should be grilled with salt, not marinated. The wine was plebian. We had to ask someone to find our waitor, as he was working both inside and outside. The bread was flovorless. And so on and so on. Since we remember Campagna with fondness, the replacement was a disappointment. The same holds for the Barn next door, under same new management. A real drop in quality.
This is a sad one for me. I want so badly to see the Bedford Post Inn maintain a great restaurant for the community. Since I have lived in Bedford for 4 years the Bedford Post has had three different restaurants in this location. When Campagna left and Baldanza moved in I was thrilled as I love the Baldanza restaurant in New Canann. However, the dinner was a disaster. The service was the worst it has ever been. We waited for 30 minutes before a waiter even came to talk to us. Our food took another 40 minutes to arrive. The food was average at best. They have also closed down the outdoor grill which was such a charming addition to the restaurant. I'm assuming they have closed it due to low traffic. I have low confidence that Baldanza will survive and am really hoping someone can get it together and make this spot as special as it really could be.
The burger is delicious u can tell it's fresh. Husband said roasted chicken was ok, not the best.
The restaurant wasn't full, but we had to ask for water refills. And we were never brought bread before our meals as we saw other tables had gotten. Much better than the overpriced high-end italian that was here before, but prices are still too much.
The food was very fresh and many of the dishes combined flavors brilliantly. Exceptional bread and olive oil introduced us to a delicious dinner. The service was professional and attentive. The only time the wait staff had to be asked a second time for something was for the bill. We ate indoors and the ambiance was soothing (many chose to eat outside on a beautiful evening). It is a lovely and comfortably elegant space inside, and tastefully landscaped outside. We will return!
Although we have been here many times the service has never been stellar but the food is pretty good. Since Baldanza took it over the poor service mirrors his restaurant in New Canaan. The server we had zero personality and less talent. Our dishes sat on the table long after we finished and they never filled the water glass. To get a refill on coffee we had to do backflips. There was never an apology or smile from anyone. I think I'm done with this place.
