BAIA has always been good before but this was not. The salad was overdressed and not fresh, the coffees were tepid and no one liked their lunch. It was remarkably disappointing.

Nice quiet place in a great location - close to art performances venues. The staff is very friendly. The food is good but lacks variety. Went there at 11:30 and were only offered a very short brunch list.

For a pre-concert dinner, we arrived 5 minutes before our reservation time and then waited 15 minutes before being seated. Entrees were very disappointing; the cannelloni had no flavor, and the lasagna was the worst I've ever experienced -- it appeared to have been kept in the oven much, much longer than it should have been. overall, disappointed.

Service was very slow from the front of house perspective. Slow to take orders, orders not getting into the system, drinks delayed. Once the food got to the table it was really good, well presented and prepared. This is the second time within 2 months that I had the experience of poor service. The people at the table next to us also had similar experiences in the past. They need more staff.

Negligent. Barely any service. Had to leave the table and go to the bar to order drinks. Rarely saw the waitress. Had to wave my arm to catch the eye of the waitress to order drinks or food. Nasty bitter dressing on the salad. Pizza dough good. Sauce on top okay but not really tasty. Only thing useful is that it’s across from Davies Symphony Hall. Absinthe or Hayes Street Grill serves more interesting dishes.

Baia is a good spot for vegan food but you can’t go here again and again because there’s no variety in the menu. We had a table reserved for an hour before closing time so most of the restaurant was empty, yet we got a table in the corner right next to the bathroom. The food was average not worth the price. Drinks are great. Overall a one time visit

Delicious food and outstanding service, The portions were very small, so relatively expensive, but by the time we’d shared three dishes, we were comfortably full. Upstairs was somewhat quieter, but there was a lively buzz in a cozy setting.

Love the inside/ ambiance at BAIA. The bar area with the gorgeous chandelier & high ceiling is cool, would come back to sit & done at the bar (or just have drinks.) Food was very good minus the spicy sausage pizza being too spicy for my girlfriend. She loved the fennel salad though. Drinks were well crafted & tasted great, and appreciate the mocktails they offer as well.

We had a 5:30 reservation before the Theater show. We got there a few minutes early and they took us which was fair because the restaurant was empty. Upstairs we went and placed at the top of the stairs. Nobody was up there so we asked to be moved away from the stairs and with a little hesitation she did move us a bit further from the congestion. BTW the place was pretty empty when we left at 7pm so I look back and wondered…why hesitate? The food was pretty pricey for what you received. We had the fennel salad. It was ok…a little too much dressing but it cut the bitterness of the Fennel. The spaghetti was over priced at $22, served on a salad plate overly spicy with three or four slices of impossible sausage. Food cost I’m guessing $2 or less. . I asked if there was cheese to top (it needed something to cut the heat) and they said yes for a $3 dollar charge. LOL this is supposed to be an Italian restaurant. We also ordered the pizza which had a decent crust with good roasted veggies but the impossible sausage ontop taste like soap. Literally like Dawn. I mentioned it to my husband and he said “omg that’s it”. Yes I did tell them and they shrugged. They advertise happy hour with wines but the glass at$10. We learned that is only for those at the bar. I thought that was strange and false advertising. The wines we did have by the glass were not good. I’d advise getting a bottle instead of a glass. White wine had a taste that it was opened for a while maybe from a previous day. The restaurants was beautiful. I loved it when it was a French restaurant. BTW this is a Vegan restaurant I didn’t know that but that isn’t a problem. I would skip this one for pricing alone and food quality. Not worth the price point. I’m so sorry to say that but that was my experience. 175 …I would expect better.

My fiancé and I LOVED Baia. This visit was very different from our usual experience so we wanted to document it in the case they’re going downhill which is what it seems. We arrived on time for our reservation and were not seated for 15 minutes. Once seated, it took our server another 5-8 minutes to greet us. We expressed we were ready to order and were able to place our order quickly. We used to love baia because they did dishes that were hard to make vegan - vegan - and they did it well. This trip was different than our previous experiences. We were disappointed in the arancini and root steak. The gnocchi was amazing but the portion was tiny. We ordered a cream soda and there was so much cream and ice that we only had about 5 total sips. We expressed our dissatisfaction with our server over the lack of actual drink in our cream soda and he gave us another one, “on the house,” which was then charged to us. I had to let him know and he then removed it from the bill. I know Matthew Kenney has had some restaurant closures recently and it feels like Baia is starting to head that way after last night’s visit. They could have just been having a bad night but it was a tough scene and not an enjoyable dinner based on our expectations and prior experiences.

Ordered champagne immediately after being seated but waited 30min for the wrong delivery and another 15min for the correct order to be served. At one point, a server or busser dropped a used KNIFE on me and stained my shirt, no apology or any sort of acknowledgment. Food was okay but not amazing. Tough to consider ever returning. Disappointed.

The servers were very knowledgeable and helpful with regard to menu selections. The menu has changed since my last visit 1 yr ago. Unfortunately, new is not always improved. The garlic knots that one of their signature items was discontinued. However, puccia bread is now on the menu and pales in comparison. It was a bit overbaked. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar made it a bit more palatable. The mocktails were tasty, and the ambiance was on point. 6.5/10

Ambiance and Service was 5 Stars, amazing. Disclaimer: if you are not vegan/plant-based, I wouldn’t expect you to enjoy the food. For instance, lasagna is made with beans/lentils. You can taste the difference in the substitutes of meat, cheese & butter. Nothing can replace these cores of a dish, no one can tell me they can’t tell the difference because I can. At the end of the day, this is a plant based/vegan restaurant, and if this is something that tailors to your diet, definitely give it a shot, if not, do not :)

The server was great and the food was wonderful. I had the earl grey gin cocktail that was probably my favorite thing. It was a little darker than I would’ve liked in the restaurant, but overall it was a beautiful place. It was our anniversary and they even gave us complimentary champagne to celebrate and even made sure my husband had a non alcoholic version . Definitely recommend for a nice dinner.

My 2-year-old daughter has a dairy allergy, and it's so hard to find a delicious restaurant where I can be completely relaxed without fear that she's going to have a reaction. I love food, I work in food, and I love restaurants, and Baia is so delicious without having to make any sort of taste sacrifice for eating at a dairy free and plant-based restaurant. We loved it and will be back on a regular basis! The servers were also so wonderful and kind. Thanks for a wonderful night!

Third visit and not sure how soon I’ll be back. The food was not as delicious as I had remembered— the Brussel sprouts were very oily and over salted and the lasagna was mushy. The service was slow all night; when the waiter brought the check he explained that there were more customers than they had expected and they were short staffed but I would have appreciated knowing that during the long waits for service.

My group and I had dinner at Baia on what I'm sure was one of their busiest nights ever (sold out performances at SF Ballet and SF Symphony) so not surprisingly service wasn't as efficient as it has been on many past visits. That said, I was so disappointed that the mozzarella sticks have been taken off the menu. Those were the perfect appetizer or nosh with a cocktail before a show. Please bring them back! The rest of the meal was fine -- meatballs were tasty, the pizza was okay (although way skimpy on cheese). The garlic bread was really heavy and tough - cutting with a knife was impossible, you had to really pull hard to break it apart for sharing. The waitstaff and servers were all really nice, but food was dropped off without serving utensils for sharing, drinks came out halfway through the meal. For the high prices, I expect excellent food and service, neither of which was great last night. I would recommend Baia only on non-performance nights AND if they bring back the mozzarella sticks!
    BAIAResponded on February 16, 2024
Hi Philip, We are disappointed that you didn't have the experience you had hoped for last night. The mozzarella sticks may eventually come back, but right now we are unable to procure some key ingredients for them. Thanks for all your feedback. Best, Catherine (GM)

We dined at Baia for the second time, last night for Valentine’s Day. The first time, we stopped in on the way to the symphony and ate at the bar. We loved it so much we decided to return. But last night was the first time we realized it was a vegan restaurant. We were shocked! Everything was filled with flavor and absolutely incredibly delicious! We didn’t miss animal products at all! I forgot to take photos because we dove into our meals! I ordered from the starters menu- meatballs on polenta, Brussels sprouts and the garlic bread. My husband ordered the Caesar salad and the lasagna. We shared bites with each other, marveling at the tastes! Oh my! So good! I couldn’t believe the meatballs weren’t actually meat! And the polenta was creamy perfection. And those Brussels sprouts? Tangy and crispy and delectable! We will definitely be back! Oh and the service was perfect too!

Had a snafu with the reservation and they were more than accommodating as was only in town for a couple days. Ambiance is nice, drink options fantastic, food was outstanding. Had marg pizza, spaghetti, Brussels sprouts and arrancini balls. Recommend it all! Do yourself a favor and check this place out! Only con I can think of is the wine list was a bit short but in no way a deal breaker.

BAIA is a vegan restaurant that is very attractive and pleasant in a wonderful location next to three major performing arts venues. On Tuesday the service was very poor. We arrived at 6pm well before a performance. We were not served until 45 minutes later, After we had finally stopped a staff person to ask if someone might take our order, the food came in a reasonable time frame. But you see we were overly patient. To us, the food was over seasoned ... but we aren't vegans, so perhaps this is not unusual. For the above reasons we may give it another chance, as we really like the ambiance and location.

We liked the experience of an all Vegan restaurant in general though it was very expensive and the food was over-garlicky. I think they lean on garlic too much to try and add flavor. AS to whether I'd recommend it or not, I'd say that depends. If you want to try something interesting and aren't worried about the cost then go for it.

I’d like to see less starchy food. More variety of proteins, vegetables, and fruits. Some comfort food is ok.

Just an indecipherable menu. After all the thinking, I ordered the salad.

It was very cold inside Might need a heavy curtain around doorway So noisy it was difficult for conversation with a soft voiced friend

Nice service and ambiance. However the food was a bit underwhelming. The food runner mistakenly mixed up who was to get the gluten free pasta even after I said I get the gluten free pasta. Not a critical issue for me but a bit annoying. The pasta sauce was overrun with pepperoncini which made it too salty. Salads were a bit heavy on the lemon and vinegar. Our server was great though and overall it was a nice evening. I was hoping that a plant based restaurant would be a bit more creative.
