Come try our unique taste, inspired by blends of Canadian and culturally themed cooking. Our seasonally changing menus feature dishes always made from scratch with locally-sourced products. Watch the scene unfold along the red hardwood runway as our hard working flavor benders work in our open-style kitchen.
The service is classic, honest, and clean – working from generations of restaurant life. Bringing back service to the way it used to be… fast, fun and friendly with know-how and experience.
Creative menu and execution that is well thought out.
Delicious food, best service in Ottawa. On our must do list each time we visit.
We loved our meal and the server was really friendly!!! We’ll be back.
Good food, good service and looks like a good scene in the evening!
Waitress was a little strange and asked questions of us twice as though she had forgotten she had already asked us these but the food was fantastic.
The menu is creative and very flavourful, and offers a few gluten free options. Kent is fabulous and helps with recommendations if can’t decide what to eat. The Backdrop has become one of our favourite places to dine in our neighbourhood. If you haven’t been, you really should try.
Service was excellent, server spoke from the heart when talking about the restaurant, convinced us to try everything. The special secret drink was amazing, mixologist is legit. Food was excellent outside of the bland charcuterie. Will be coming back for sure.
Absolutely sensational food. The brunch menu is small but one of the best in the city. If you're a foodie, you need to check out this restaurant. It is worth the wait
Great presentation and really good food. Friendly and efficient staff. Very noisy and no air conditioner.
Quality of food was great, taste was great. A little bit on the pricey side and noise level was a bit high for me, but overall experience was great!
As always, the food is very good and the service is friendly. Been here many times, always for lunch. My only complaint would be the music level being way too loud for lunch. Would be perfect for happy hour though.
not what we see on the web. Saturday night and super quiet very small place.
not what we expect.
Chose Backdrop for a lunch meeting. I walk by it all the time and this is the first time I’ve eaten there. I loved it. I will be back and I’ll be bringing more people.
Enjoyed Fathers Day brunch for 3. The Usual, the Veggie Frittata and the Eggs Benny were all excellent.
Excellent Father's Day Brunch. My son was won over by the Croque Voisine.
Friendly, helpful service staff. Food was disappointing. The ribs tasted nothing like the menu description; far too much salt overpowered everything. Jalapeno cornbread was dry.
My team really enjoyed the service, ambience and their meals. The menu is a little intimidating, but trust they know what they're doing.
Great place but very noisy ...perhaps some noise buffing elements would help! My artic char was overcooked. Glass noodle peanut shrimp dish was excellent! Service was excellent!
We really enjoyed our first visit to Backdrop. The decor has a casual bar vibe to it and our server was efficient and friendly. The food is homemade, delicious, and nicely plated. It was fairly quiet when we arrived at 6:30 pm on a Friday night but got busier as the evening progressed. Live music started around 8 pm which really added to the energy of the space. It would be a great place to go for an evening of drinks, food, and fun with friends. It's in a nice area, just a short walk from several hotels and Parliament Hill. We'll definitely drop by again the next time we're in Ottawa.
The food was great as was the service. The chairs were somewhat wobbly, we weren’t sure they wouldn’t give out and the music was very loud for comfortable conversation at lunchtime, mixed with the volume of others. Ambient music would be more appreciated.
It was great food, timing was good as well since we had an event later in evening.
Lots of other brunch places with better service. I went there for Sunday brunch - and they didn't have tea! No tea on the most popular brunch day of the year. Now, I can see they may have run out, but the server I had just said 'no, no tea today'. I asked him again, and he just stood there, with no explanation, or willingness to accommodate my request.
I ended up walking out of the restaurant, 50 feet across the street to a circle-K, bought a box of my own tea, and returned. Fortunately, they *did* have hot water.
But, as a customer, should you be expected to supply a restaurant with the supplies?
Food was good, but they've got a LOT to learn about meeting customer's expectations....
Incredibly delicious food, beautiful decor & atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff & PHENOMENAL entertainment. It was pretty loud only because there was a band when we went but we expected that! It was pretty busy so we had two waiters tending to us and one of them forgot to bring our dessert. Other than that, it was a great experience and I will definitely be coming back!!
Great food and impressive and varied menu. The service was slow insofar as it took a while for acknowledgement of my arrival and to be seated despite having a reservation. The hostess never spoke to me assuming that I was part of another waiting group. Furthermore my side dish order was never delivered which was disappointing. I waited and when I realized that it had not been noted I didn’t bother asking for it.
Lunch was very tasty, personalize service of server (receipt gave name as "lunch" lol) and kitchen staff added to the enjoyable experience. We had the Burger and The Char Burger and both were well prepared, juicy, tender and very tasty. Definitely worth many visits.
Amazing food as always. Their Cornish Hen is wonderful and the duck wings are mouth watering.
Just finished an amazing meal at the Backdrop. I have been there 4 or 5 times already and have yet to be disappointed. The Cornish hen, the Arctic char, the bison chilli, the crab and cod cakes are amazing. As for their duck wings I challenge anyone to find better in the city of Ottawa.
If you haven’t been there yet, well you are missing out. As for me it is one of my go to places when I’m in town.
Great experience! Kent was awesome!
Great food, excellent and personalized service. Not overly noisy, even on a crowded Friday night. The popcorn snack was delicious and appreciated. Fries were super-salty.
Amazing food, drinks, staff. A must if you in Ottawa.
Great place for dinner on a Friday night... great service, great good and great times to be had for sure!
I've been here twice; once for brunch and once for an evening drink. Service was great in the evening but brunch was very slow, table wasn't set, had to ask for everything; cutlery, salt & pepper, even the menus took a long time to come to our table after we were seated. I enjoy the restaurant though and the food was prepared very well and was very tasty. I'd still go back, expecting maybe that negative experience was a one time thing.
Food was good but not hot, fries are best served hot, even though it wasn’t busy.
The prices are quite good for the good variety on the menu.
Our server was very attentive and friendly.
I’d will definitely be going back to try other dishes.
Had a great time. Kent is really amiable and knowledgeable.
I use to pass by that place almost everyday. If I would have known then how good the food is, it would have taken me all the will I have not to eat there everyday.
I went for diner and I had the wild boar chili and my guest, the pork ribs. The chili was on the thick side (which I loved) and I never tasted anything like the sauce on those ribs, so good! The cornbread is to die for, I'll ask for an extra next time.
I can't wait to go back and try EVERYTHING!
My friends and I were disappointed with the quality of the brunch. The food was pretty expensive for VERY basic food. I have gone to Backdrop for dinner before which was quite good but brunch was VERY disappointing.
Always a great restaurant. Food is top notch and service is great.
Did not stay for lunch because of the awfully poor service. Place was extremely loud. Upon arrival, nobody welcomed guests at the door nor showed me to my table for several minutes. After standing there on my own, I finally Asked server to please show me to my table which seemed to have annoyed her. She then said: “that’s one is the only one free so it must be yours.” I showed myself to my table and was then ignored for a good 10 minutes. Once more, I asked the server a question but she rudely dismissed me saying “in a minute.” I don’t think this staff should be in the service industry! I walked out and lunched elsewhere.
The food is fabulous, small venue but helps with noise reduction.
Always have a good meal and interesting food at Backdrop.
