Back 40 Ratings and Reviews
What an overall wonderful experience! We had heard grand things about Back 40 and they did not disappoint. A gem in Charlottesville. Take note of the ceiling sculpture and inquire about its origin. There are beautiful stories behind the creation of Back 40.
Since I work in the business, very rarely do I ever write a review, especially in my hometown. But I can't resist writing a short bit on how excellent BACK40 is. Chef Tucker is the master in the area at combining comfort-food techniques with new-age creativity. This is equally a spot for those who don't tend to branch out, as it is for those who enjoy trying something new. The ingredients, as a whole, are better than anywhere else in the area - they really are cooking as seasonally as you can in 2017 while still staying relevant. The bar program is based on a larder built by the kitchen and bar team that makes for cocktails that actually pair with food - that's a first. Wine program doesn't match the food program, but that's the only flaw I could possibly find. Service and atmosphere is always warm, and it is the only place in town that you can feel like you're eating at home. Top three restaurant for value in Cville. Visited three times so far - will be back for more!
Back 40 is an intimate restaurant with only a handful of tables. The decoration is nice and we loved the ambiance. The waiter was responsive and knowledgable. However, the food wasn't great for the price. I ordered my steak medium rare per the recommendation of the server (otherwise I would have ordered it rare). It came out medium well and was dry with no red whatsoever. My wife's pork also came out overcooked. The drinks were great though. I can't say I was super impressed overall but might give it another shot down the line.
Somewhat awkward service and a little slow, but that's to be expected of a new restaurant. You could tell that the menu was very well thought out. They had a vegan dish (it was ok, really acidic) which is a perk for our family (one vegan, one vegetarian). Well curated menu and a lovely atmosphere - definitely felt like a special meal.
This is a lovely new restaurant. We few like we have found a little gem in the heart of Charlottesville. The only problem will be that it will become so popular we won't be able to get reservations..The staff and food are both top rate and the dining area is on the intimate side, which is so hard to find these days. You are guaranteed to have a very nice evening.
This was our second meal at Back 40 and everything has been wonderful. It is a very intimate setting, quiet and comfortable. The service has been great both times and the food has been outstanding. The local cut steaks are excellent as are all of the local foods you find on the menu. It is the best farm to table restaurant in Charlottesville.
Although this was a definite fresh farm to table restaurant, there were some issues. I am not one to usually complain about price to food ratio, but the duck was $30 and was literally 5 bites. The wine list was very creative for a small list. The bottle I wanted to order was out of stock. One of our guests at the table ordered chicken and a piece of beef came out. The wait staff recognized the problem before serving the beef and comped the beef and eventually brought out the chicken after the rest of the group had finished their dinners. I believe they have great potential, but this was not the night that the reached it.
Had no idea that this was their 3rd day in operation! Food was exceptionally creative, which makes sense given the back story. A little hard to find, as there if no signage. p.s. Born & bred San Franciscan, so have well-educated taste buds, and this Chef rocks!
Best dinner in Charlottesville! The restaurant is comfortable and classy. The service was wonderful and the staff is very accommodating and knowledgeable. The cocktails were unique, fun, and delicious. Chef Yoder's menu was impressive and the the dishes we ordered were perfectly well rounded, portioned and were out of this world tasty. What a treat, all the way around. Fresh, local, and inspired food at a great price. Thank you Timbercreek Farm and Back 40!
The food was very good and the wait staff was friendly and helpful. It was unique to dine in a "market, but it actually made it more fun. Hats off to the chef, it was a memorable meal. I have already recommended to a friend that this is a local place to dine.
We continue to dine at Timber Creek market because of the evolving menu that always outshines other foodie restaurants in Charlottesville. We applaud Sarah Miller for her commitment to a local sustainable farm to table dining experience with careful attention to the menu and presentation. We absolutely love this restaurant and continue to visit as often as we can for a Friday night date.
